Specifically, we prove that the gOK(r) of the ring of integers OK of a totally real number field K is at most gZ([K : Q]r). Moreover, it can also be bounded by gOF ([K : F]r + 1) for any subfield F of K. This yields a subexponential upper bound for g(r) of each ring of integers (even if the class number is not 1). Further, we obtain a more general inequality for the lattice version G(r) of the invariant and apply it to determine the value of G(2) for all but one real quadratic field.Peer reviewe
RoMEO Studies 4: An analysis of Journal publishers' Copyright Agreements
This article is the fourth in a series of six emanating from the UK JISC-funded RoMEO Project (Rights Metadata for Open archiving). It describes an analysis of 80 scholarly journal publishers’ copyright agreements with a particular view to their effect on author self-archiving. 90% of agreements asked for copyright transfer and 69% asked for it prior to refereeing the paper. 75% asked authors to warrant that their work had not been previously published although only two explicitly stated that they viewed self-archiving as prior publication. 28.5% of agreements provided authors with no usage rights over their own paper. Although 42.5% allowed self-archiving in some format, there was no consensus on the conditions under which self-archiving could take place. The article concludes that author-publisher copyright agreements should be reconsidered by a working party representing the needs of both partie
A 2 h periodic variation in the low-mass X-ray binary Ser X-1
Spectroscopy of the low-mass X-ray binary Ser X-1 using the Gran Telescopio Canarias have revealed a ?2 h periodic variability that is present in the three strongest emission lines. We tentatively interpret this variability as due to orbital motion, making it the first indication of the orbital period of Ser X-1. Together with the fact that the emission lines are remarkably narrow, but still resolved, we show that a main-sequence K dwarf together with a canonical 1.4 M? neutron star gives a good description of the system. In this scenario, the most likely place for the emission lines to arise is the accretion disc, instead of a localized region in the binary (such as the irradiated surface or the stream-impact point), and their narrowness is due instead to the low inclination (?10°) of Ser X-1
The ceremonies of Charles II's court
PhDThis thesis examines the question of how the restored monarchy used the ceremonies of court in the
period 1660-1685. It is concerned with those rituals which took place regularly within the royal
palaces, that is to say the ceremonies of the Chapel Royal, of healing, of reception and audience,
dining and entertaining, and the rituals which took place within the privy apartments, including the
royal lever and coucher. The ways in which these rituals operated over the course of the reign are
considered - with close reference to their physical setting - as is their significance as expressions of
royal power.
The contention of the thesis is that the ceremonies of the Restoration court are a neglected subject
deserving of serious study, and that by examining them real insight can be gained into the changing
nature of monarchy, the personality of Charles II and the politics of his reign. The thesis argues,
contrary to traditional accounts of his reign, that Charles II took the formal exchanges of court life
very seriously, that their performance was intimately connected to the politics of the period and that
they were crucial to the way in which he projected his own majesty
Do we need restraint?
The text is a contribution to the ethical-philosophical questioning about the premises of the virtues ethics of contemporary Western society. The author points to the ancient Greek ideal of restraint; emphasizes its gnoseological and moral dimension. A consistent expression of this tendency is the ancient Greek “aidós”, understood as a partial stepping aside, respect for something (someone). The rise of modern modernity is characterized by the author as the onset of an instrumental concept, whose expression is an unstoppable, “manly” approach to the world, to nature and to man himself, and omnipresent obscenity (in the sense of revealing “what has to be behind the scene”). The author interprets the “postmodern situation” of the contemporary West as ambivalent and calls for rediscovery of shyness as a humble attitude of life, opened to questions about the meaning of the world and the place of mankind in it
Economic evaluation of a stratified transport method for Atlantic halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus) juveniles
The objective of this study was to evaluate a convenient, low-cost modification to conventional transfer methods for Atlantic halibut juveniles. A series of wire mesh cages were stacked within transport tanks creating a stratified transport system (STS), increasing the surface area for settlement and facilitating a more homogeneous distribution of halibut throughout the tank compared with the conventional insulated box (Unstructured, UTS). A stochastic cost-benefit analysis determined investment into a STS to be cost-effective, generating a mean benefit-cost ratio of 1.31 (95% CI, 0.68–2.00) after 2 years and a mean 5-year net present value of 85,176(9546,906–$125,630). The implementation of a STS was found to be technically feasible and economically efficient method to improve Atlantic halibut transport.Peter J. Sykes, Carol A. McClure, Debbie J. K-theory for group C*-algebras
These notes are based on a lecture course given by the first author in the Sedano Winter School on K-theory held in Sedano, Spain, on January 22-27th of 2007. They aim at introducing K-theory of C*-algebras, equivariant K-homology and KK-theory in the context of the Baum-Connes conjectur

On the problem of “I”
K problému „Já“. – Příspěvek sleduje koncept jáství s využitím Heideggerovy ontologie a myšlenky ontologické diference. Autorka dospívá k postřehu, že Já není poslední základ člověka, protože se proměnilo na subjekt, a tím se Já i subjekt staly objektem, aniž to bylo zpozorováno.On the problem of “I”. – The paper traces the concept of the self using Heidegger’s ontology and the idea of ontological difference. The author comes to the conclusion that the self is not the ultimate foundation of humanity, because it has been transformed into a subject, and thus both the self and the subject have become objects without anyone noticing
Two Monumental Publications Marking the 700th Anniversary of Birth of Charles IV in Current Czech Politics of History
This contribution compares two voluminous books which were published to mark the 700th anniversary of birth of Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV in 2016. The author analyses their structure, content, methods used, and their relation to current streams in Czech politics. Despite numerous differences, both books share certain focus on self-celebration of power and symbolic values of the ruler and the Church. This is probably largely due to the fact that as a set of available sources, surviving works of art would lend themselves to alternative representations only with difficulty
