Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Faargia gentilii
<i>Faargia gentilii</i> (Martínez, 1975) (Fig. 2) <p> <b>Diagnosis.</b> This species can be distinguished from other Chilean tanyproctines (<i>i.e.</i>, <i>Chilenopilus</i> Smith & Mondaca, <i>Myloxena</i> Berg, and <i>Luispenaia</i> Martínez) by the black coloration on the head, pronotum, and legs and the elytra reddish brown (Fig. 2A). Dorsal surface covered with long and dense pubescence, tawny on head and pronotum; thorax ventrally with dense pubescence. Antennae long, with 9 antennomeres, club with 3 antennomeres. Protibia with 2 subacute, external teeth. Protibial and metatibial spurs absent (Fig. 2A). Protarsomere, mesotarsomere, and metatarsomere 5 with curved and dentate claw.</p> <p> <b>Examined material.</b> 4 males at: Chile, La Araucanía, Lonquimay, Agua Enterrada, 38°35’34,40’’S - 71°00’14,60’’W, 1464 m, light trap, 26-iv-2018, P. Pulgar (SAGC).</p> <p> <b>Distribution.</b> The native range of <i>F. gentilii</i> includes Argentina, in the provinces of Neuquén and Chubut (Martínez 1975, 1982) (Fig. 3). <b>New country record:</b> Chile, Araucanía, Malleco Province (Fig. 3).</p> <p> <b>Habitat.</b> Specimens of <i>F. gentilii</i> have been collected in a semi-arid steppe environment dominated by low-elevation thorny scrub composed of shrubs of the genera <i>Adesmia</i>, <i>Berberis</i> and <i>Mulinum</i>, as well as a grass cover (<i>Stipa</i> and <i>Poa</i>) typical of the Patagonian steppe. The main capture site is located east of the city of Lonquimay, 8.5 km from the border with Argentina. The distribution corresponds to the Patagonian subregion and Central Patagonian province in southern Argentina, from central Mendoza, widening through Neuquén, Río Negro, and Chubut, to northern Tierra del Fuego. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
Parochodaeus bituberculatus
<i>Parochodaeus bituberculatus</i> (Erichson, 1847) (Fig. 1) <p> <b>Diagnosis.</b> This species can be distinguished from other Chilean scarabaeoids by the absence of a true ocular canthus dividing the eye, and for having the clypeus shorter and frons armed with two elongate and obsoletes tubercles (Fig. 1B). The protibial apex is straighter and narrower (Fig. 1C). Ochodaeidae possess pectinate mesotibial spurs not found in other scarabaeoids in the region (Fig. 1D). The elytral locking mechanism consists of acute elytral apices and bituberculate propygidium.</p> <p> <b>Specimens examined.</b> 1 female at: Chile, Arica y Parinacota, Zapahuira, pista de aterrizaje, 18°18’57.12’’S – 69°36’22.51’’W, 3368 m, light trap, 29-III-2013, col. A. Fierro (JMEC). 1 male at: Chile, Arica y Parinacota, Pachama, 18°25’41,15’’S, 69°31’34,07’’W, 3443 m, light trap, 29-III-2013, col. A. Fierro (MNNC).</p> <p> <b>Distribution.</b> The native range of <i>P. bituberculatus</i> includes west side of Peru (Erichson 1847; Ratcliffe <i>et al.</i> 2015). <b>New country record:</b> Chile, Arica and Parinacota Region, Parinacota Province (Fig. 3).</p> <p> <b>Habitat.</b> <i>Parochodaeus bituberculatus</i> was found in the mountains located east of the city of Arica in northern Chile, between 3,368–3,443 m. The native vegetation of this locality consists principally of resinous shrubs, herbaceous plants, cacti, and coarse grasses. The distribution corresponds to the Puna biogeographic province that also extends into eastern Bolivia, southern Peru, northern Argentina, and Chile (Morrone 2001).</p> <p> <b>Remarks.</b> Erichson (1847) described the species, but the only information given is that the specimen was from the west side of the Andes in Peru. The only recent specimens known are in the J.-B. Huchet collection in Paris, and are from Chaute, Peru at an elevation of 2,400 m (M.J.
