    Roscoe C. “Ross” Masterman was born in Wilton, Maine, February 15, 1911, the third child of Eben E. and Grace (Chaney) Masterman. He graduated from the University of Maine with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering in 1932. Masterman’s industrial paper career began with International Paper Co. in 1933 at Livermore Falls, Maine. Beginning in 1956, he was promoted successively with IP’s Eastern Division to Assistant Division Manager and Division Manager for Engineering and Manufacturing. In 1966 he was promoted to Division General Manager. In July 1970, Masterman was appointed Vice President-Manufacturing for IP and in 1972 he was promoted once again to Executive Vice President of Canadian International Paper Company. Masterman joined the Pulp and Paper Foundation in 1952. He served as Foundation President from 1970 to 1973 and as Chair, 1973-1975. His other professional activities included the chairmanship of both the TAPPI Fourdrinier Committee and the Paper and Board Manufacturing Division.     Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
