We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Lowest electronic states of neutral and ionic LiN

We have investigated the potential energy curves (PECs) of the LiN heteronuclear diatomic molecule, including its ionic species LiN+ and LiN−, using explicitly correlated multi-reference configuration interaction (MRCI-F12) calculations in conjunction with the correlation consistent quintuple- basis set. The effect of core–valence correlation, scalar relativistic effects, and the size of the basis sets has been investigated. A comprehensive set of spectroscopic constants determined based on the above-mentioned calculations are also reported for the lowest electronic states and all systems, including dissociation energies, harmonic and anharmonic vibrational frequencies, and rotational constants. Additional parameters, such as the dipole moments, equilibrium spin-orbit constants, excitation energies, and rovibrational energy levels, are also documented. We found that the three triplet states of LiN, namely, X 3∑−, A 3Π, and 2 3∑−, exhibit substantial potential wells in the PEC diagrams, while the quintet states are repulsive in nature. The ground state of the anion also shows a deep potential well in the vicinity of its equilibrium geometry. In contrast, the ground and excited states of the cation are very loosely bound. Charge transfer properties of each of these states are also analyzed to obtain an in-depth understanding of the interatomic interactions. We found that the core–valence correlation has a substantial effect on the calculated spectroscopic constants.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Atmospheric Remote Sensin

Does Downloading PowerPoint Slides Before the Lecture Lead to Better Student Achievement?: Reply

This reply responds to a comment by Cannon (2011) that opens the debate on consistency of the effect of downloading PowerPoint slides before lectures on students’ exam performance. Cannon (2011) points out potential endogeneity problems in Chen and Lin (2008) and attempts to explore the unconditional mean effect of downloading PowerPoint slides for the full sample. In this reply, we firstly argue that the estimates in our original article are consistent since the effect of interest is the “conditional†treatment effect but not the unconditional mean effect. We provide explanations for our rationale of estimating the “conditional†treatment effect. Secondly, we propose a modified downloading variable to replicate Cannon’s analysis. Our results suggest that downloading PowerPoint slides before the exam does not produce a significant effect on absent students’ exam performance which is different from the results in Cannon (2011). Our analysis does support Cannon’s argument that students fixed effects are different across different attendance status.

Plant-derived compounds can provide an alternative approach to new medical therapies with features including effectiveness, lower cost of production and milder side effects in clinical experiments compared with conventional treatments. SF is an important ingredient in a number of Chinese medications used for the treatment of chronic HCV infection and represents an important and largely untapped source of potential antiviral compounds. Results of preliminary screening indicated that SF is the most effective and specific medicine against HCV replication among the 45 test Chinese medicines in HCV-JFH-1 infectious assay. Based on anti-viral guided extraction and fractionation, we discovered the most active anti-HCV compound of SF and MS, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, HMBC and NOESY assays confirm it to be SFG. SFG significantly suppressed HCV replication by almost 90% at a concentration of 10μm. In the HCV replicon system, we demonstrated that SFG inhibited HCV RNA replication. No significant cytotoxicity was observed with higher concentrations of SFG. We further showed that SFG induced lipid storage and increases in LDs size. Enlarged LDs are able to induce changes in the environment around LDs and thus interfere with HCV replication complex formation. Additionally, SFG significantly induced both HO-1 production and antiviral interferon responses that are able to affect different aspects of the HCV life cycle. These findings suggested that SFG could be a new potential drug for HCV treatment in the future.

Molecular mechanisms of monocyte depletion and CD4+ T-cell persistence during human T-cell leukemia virus infection

Human T-cell Leukemia Virus type 1 (HTLV-1) was the first human retrovirus discovered in 1980. It is the causal agent of two well characterized human diseases, Adult T-cell Leukemia (ATL) and HTLV-1-Associated Myelopathy/Tropical Spastic Paraparesis (HAM/TSP). Few treatment options have been developed for ATL and HAM/TSP; the median survival times for ATL remains under a year, and treatment options of HAM/TSP remain palliative in nature. Thankfully the incidence of disease in HTLV-1 infected patients is relatively low, with only approximately 5% of individuals developing ATL and 2% HAM/TSP. One major obstacle in the development of effective therapies is a lack of understanding regarding the factors that determine HTLV-1 associated pathology. The route of transmission, contaminated breast milk and blood, almost exclusively lead to ATL or HAM/TSP development respectively, but it is unclear as to why. This suggests that the early events of HTLV-1 infection may be key in discerning pathological outcomes. Unfortunately this time point is understudied, in part due to the fact that de novo infection is asymptomatic. The activity of cytotoxic T-cell lymphocytes seems to be vital in controlling viral replication, and is likely a key determinant in disease progression. We thus set out to study the early events of HTLV-1 infection in two important immunologically relevant peripheral blood mononuclear cell populations, monocytes and CD4+ T-cells. HTLV-1 infection of primary human monocytes resulted in the depletion of this cell type. This was not mediated by viral accessory proteins, as host restriction factor SAMHD1 prevented the completion of reverse transcription. The DNA by-products of this inhibition induced a potent STING-mediated immunological response, that triggered Bax and IRF3 activation and complex formation that led to apoptosis. Infection of activated CD4+ T-cells on the other hand, resulted in persistent cellular survival. This was mediated by the viral accessory protein Tax, known to have oncogenic properties. Tax expression activated the AKT pathway, which resulted in the inactivation of the pro-apoptotic FOXO3a transcription factor. This led to the long-term survival of an activated CD4+ T-cell population that was capable of viral transmission. Overall this work has demonstrated the molecular consequences of HTLV-1 infection in two important cell types, monocytes and CD4+ T-cells. These events likely shape the subsequent immunological events that control viral replication and likely influence HTLV-1 disease pathology.
