The tale of Lady Tan: negotiating place between Central and local in Song-Yuan-Ming China

    No full text
This paper explores the story of Lady Tan across genres from biographical record to temple inscription and marvellous tale, highlighting different representations of ‘the local’ in these stories: the loss of local belonging for some, inscribing the morals of a local community for others. Focusing on this tale, this essay argues that locality and belonging were contested constructs, especially during the Song-Yuan-Ming transitional period. Ex-ploring how literati understood themselves in relation to their localities contributes to our understanding of literati identities and the meaning of ‘the local’, in a period with ‘weak central government’, or as a repeating pattern of centralisation and localisation. It reveals the complexities in-volved in giving meaning to locality and negotiating belonging. In Ji'an prefecture, the centralising policies of the Hongwu and Yongle emperors were felt locally and affected how literati positioned themselves between central government and local community. This focus on literati writings from a single prefecture suggests that a close reading of the negotiations that form part of constructing locality and belonging in Ji'an can reveal the potential for a complex interplay between central government and local communities throughout China

Feasibility of Software-Based Duty Cycling of GPS for Trajectory-Based Services

Energy-efficient localization is increasingly important for many types of smartphone apps. The research community has argued that fixed duty cycling of GPS is not a good choice for trajectory-based services concerning route accuracy. In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of a highly accurate map matching and path construction algorithm. Furthermore, with thorough field experiments, we show that fixed duty cycling of a smartphone GPS receiver is a feasible approach for trajectory-based services, and it can achieve considerable energy conservation without sacrificing much route accuracy. When increasing the GPS sampling period beyond 120 seconds, it saves at least 78% energy in comparison to continuous GPS sampling, while the loss of route accuracy tends to be stable around 23%.Li, Xiaohan, Yuan, Fengpeng, & Lindqvist, Janne. The Research on The Control Yuan of Taiwan

The Republic of China conducts the Five-Power Constitution. As one of the five powers, the Control Yuan causes frequently controversies. However, the issue of the Control Yuan is by no means exclusive to the present day. The Control Yuan is the idea of the separation of five powers by Mr. Sun Yat-sen, as its implementation is different from the West, the system was questioned at the beginning and the Control Yuan cannot refute it because of its vague positioning and lack of a considerable basis. The purpose of this study was to investigate the improvement and the future direction of the Control Yuan. This research begins by discussing the theory, background, evolution, and legal system of the Control Yuan, and analyzed the current system to understand the origin and current situation of our country's supervisory system. Moreover, the system of the supervisory institutes of various countries was discussed to clarify the types of the supervisory systems, and to compare the strengths and weaknesses of the supervisory systems of the indicator countries. After the constitution was amended in the 1990s, the disputes and problem of the Control Yuan\ue2s current system was analyzed in detail. Finally, the existence and abolition of The Control Yuan was discussed, the reasons for supporting the existence of the Control Yuan were explained, it analyzes the possible future trends of The Control Yuan and puts forward the points that the Control Yuan can add and modify in the future. This thesis suggested that the Control Yuan should be retained. It is an important mechanism that can urge government agencies to comply with the law and fulfill their responsibilities. It is also an important external control system, and the establishment is meanwhile the trend of international constitutionalism. The result of this study recommended that the Control Yuan continues to exist and makes amendments to specific disputes. The sanctioning authority of the Control Yuan commissioners and Control Yuan could be increased, the system of against corruption and government Ethics could be merged to strengthen the capacity and organization, to continue developing and expanding its human rights functions, and to retain its independent and supreme position
