Objetive: The objective of the present work was to evaluate the centesimal composition, the amino acid profile and the the composition and nutritive value of three casein concentrates, obtained by different methods. Methods: The casein concentrates were analysed according to the following methods: a commercial casein obtained by acid precipitation (pl) followed by neutralization; an enzyme coagulated casein obtained by rennet coagulation; and a casein micelles concentrate obtained by microlfiltration and diafiltration. The Centesimal composition was determined by the procedures described in the manual Official Methods of Analysis. The amino acid profiles were determined after the protein acid hydrolysis (HCl 6N, 105°C, 22h) in an amino acid autoanalyzer by cation exchange chromatography and post-column ninhydrin reaction. The essential amino acids were in accordance with Food and Agriculture Organization/World Health Organization recommendation for children 2 to 5 years of age. The nutritive value was determined on 21-day old rats of the Wistar strain through apparent net protein ratio, and protein efficiency ratio operational. Results: Commercial casein presented higher protein concentration (92.0%) than micellar casein (86.0%) and casein clot (72.0%). The animals in the various protein diets did not show significant differences as to body weight gain and diet consumption. The highest digestibility was that of commercial casein (93.8%), compared to the other two concentrates (91.0%). Conclusion: The casein concentrates showed differences related to the centesimal composition, since the commercial casein presented a higher protein concentration. The casein clot was inferior to the other protein concentrates regarding net protein ratio and protein efficiency ratio operational.1817583Sgarbieri, V.C., (1996) Proteínas Em Alimentos Protéicos: Propriedades, Degradações, Modificações, , São Paulo: VarelaDavian, C., Farnelart, M.H., Pierre, A., Gouderanche, H., Maubois, J.L., Rennet coagulation of skin milk and curd drainage: Effect of pH, casein concentration, ionic strength and heat treatment (2000) Le Lait, 80 (4), pp. 397-415Gaucheron, F., Le Graët, Y., Briard, V., Effect of sodium chloride addition on the mineral equilibrium of concentrated and acidified casein micelles (2000) Milchwissenschaft, 55 (2), pp. 82-86Wong, D.W.S., Camirant, W.M., Pavlath, A.E., Structures and functionalities of milk proteins (1996) Crit Rev Food Sci Nutr, 36 (8), pp. 807-844Southward, C.R., Utilization of milk components (1986) Modern Dairy Technology - Advances in Milk Processing, pp. 317-368. , New York: ElselvierFox, P.F., The milk protein system (1989) Developments in Dairy Chemistry - 4, pp. 1-55. , Fox PF, editor. The Attic and The Wheelchair V.C. Andrews\u27s Accident and The Dollanganger Series

    No full text
Author V.C. Andrews became known in 1979 with her first novel Flowers in the Attic and continued the series with Petals on the Wind, If There be Thorns, and Seeds of Yesterday. Problematic themes such as sudden accidents, romantic rape, incest, and mother daughter rivalry emerge continuously in each novel. In her interview with Douglas E. Winter, Andrews explains that since her debilitating fall down the stairs at the age of fifteen she lived with and depended on her mother. Unable to fulfill the goals of her childhood, Andrews read fairy tales, and romance novels and wrote her fantasies in the Dollanganger Series. The troublesome characteristics of sudden death, taboo sex, and gender roles reveal a stunted emotional development in the author. This thesis examines the possibility that the series\u27s disturbing, repeated themes are inspired by Andrews\u27s debilitating fall down the stairs when she was fifteen

    Morphological pilot-experiment Vinje-basin

    No full text
This paper evaluates the behaviour and the usefulness of a 3D morphological pilot-experiment. It reports the set up and execution of a 3D wave-current physical model in more detail. Furthermore, a selection of the collected data will be compared with computational output from a 3D morphological model. The bathymetries are mainly determined by a new waterline detection method. The application of this model will be evaluated. The morphological pilot-experiment showed that despite the limited equipment it is feasible to carry out such test. However, the calibration of the upstream sand supply requires much attention. Comparing the measurements of the pilot-experiment with the computational results gives a qualitative agreement. Simultaneous observation of the process parameters such as longshore current and concentration shows significantly lower values than the computer predicted values. Analysing the images ofthe video with the new waterline detection technique appears to be working, but is not very accurate because ofthe sensitivity to the spurious reflections. The morphological impact around structures would be more accurately determined with advanced measurement instruments, operated from a moveable carriage. For longer experimental programmes, an efficient sediment supply system and a more sophisticated sandtrapping and pumping system are necessary in order to keep the model running smoothly.Hydraulic EngineeringCivil Engineering and Geoscience

Trading in legal claims: law, policy and future directions in Australia, UK and US

    No full text
This book analyses law and policy issues regarding the creation of markets for trading in legal claims. The author reviews the current positions in Australia, UK and US regarding claim alienability and provides a comparative analysis of the divergent paths that have developed in each, all of which portend towards claim commodification. The author also examines the regulatory options to ensure that claim holders in a legal claim market would be protected from exploitation and that the market operates fairly and efficiently. The book reviews costs and abuse of process issues that could arise and conflicts of interest that may exist between claimholders, lawyers and entrepreneurs. The author argues that legal claim markets are justified on both policy and efficiency grounds as a means of improving access to justice
