Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
Why do tour operators collapse? - Thomas Cook
U tom periodu stagnacije tijekom Drugog svjetskog rata Thomas Cook je nacionaliziran i stavljen pod nadzor Transport holdingsa, britanske željezničke kompanije. Tourism as a phenomenon stems from man’s need to travel, but it has not always been intended for people of all social classes as is the case today. The event that brought him closer to people who do not belong to the upper class of society was the organization of group trips, which was first organized by Thomas Cook, who also founded the company of the same name that dealt with this business. The mentioned event happened in 1841, and it marked the beginning of a revolution in travel. This company can be considered the first tour operator to do business in the world. Although at the time of its establishment it worked as a tourist agency, it can be considered the first tour operator because its organizational function was emphasized in their business. The first tour operators in the modern sense were associated with the provision of travel that offered aircraft as a means of transportation. Thomas Cook and his son were the ones who successfully ran this company and created new trends at one time. After selling the company to its Belgian partner Compagnie Generale des Wagons-Lits in 1928, the company began a period of stagnation that lasted until the 1950s. During this period of stagnation during World War II, Thomas Cook was nationalized and placed under the control of Transport Holdings, a British railway company. Later, with the development of air transport in the second half of the 20th century, the term tour operator was introduced. This is the time when many large tourist resorts are being built in the Mediterranean and which have been visited by a large number of European tourists. At the time, Thomas Cook was privatized and became the property of the Bank of Midland, which significantly expanded and improved Thomas Cook's business. Many tour operators still operate in a similar way as at the time of their development, while some have significantly expanded and modernized their business. In the last 10 years, tourism, as well as society as a whole, has changed and imposed some new trends. The share of tour operators in the tourism market is declining, and more and more people are traveling on their own. This has enabled them to develop information technologies and develop platforms that simplify travel arrangements. Such changes, along with bad business decisions, resulted in the collapse of the oldest company that dealt with organized travel - Thomas Cook, and what will happen to the others remains to be seen. One thing is for sure, the world and tourism are changing, and if they want to continue doing business, tour operators will have to change the way they do business
Development of cultural tourism supply in the area of the town of Sinj and the Cetina region
Kulturni turisti imaju različite motive i razine povezanosti s destinacijom, često imaju viši socioekonomski status i obrazovanje, a mlađi turisti također pokazuju interes za kulturne sadržaje. Obje rute omogućuju turistima dublje razumijevanje povijesti i kulture Cetinske krajine, potičući razvoj održivog turizma u regiji. As an introduction to the topic of cultural tourism in the Cetina region, this work focuses on defining and analyzing cultural tourism. The text examines various definitions of tourism and culture, as well as their interconnections. It also discusses different forms of cultural tourism and types of cultural tourists, providing an overview of definitions of cultural tourism according to various authors. Additionally, the study explores the cultural tourism market.Cultural tourism is distinguished from other forms of tourism by the fact that its attractions are available yearround. Cultural tourists have different motives and levels of connection to the destination. They often possess higher socioeconomic status and education, with younger tourists also showing interest in cultural content. Furthermore, the research employs benchmark analysis, defined as the process of comparing one’s results with those of competitors to identify shortcomings and improvements. In tourism, benchmark analysis also includes non-financial indicators such as guest satisfaction.Andalusia is used as the first example for benchmark analysis; it is a region in Spain that stands out as a cultural destination due to its rich history and traditions, including Flamenco and bullfighting. The second example selected is Moravia in the Czech Republic, which also nurtures its culture, particularly through tourist attractions like the Battle of Austerlitz, appealing to cultural tourists with a strong interest in military history. Both destinations illustrate the importance of cultural tourism, which not only stimulates economic growth but also preserves local traditions and identity. The third chapter emphasizes the importance of tourist attractions as fundamental resources, divided into actual and potential, with a focus on cultural and religious monuments. The Cetina region is rich in natural attractions, such as the Cetina River and its canyons, offering recreational opportunities like rafting. Moreover, the area is abundant in cultural heritage, including institutions and historical landmarks. The Sinjska Alka, a knightly game lasting over 300 years, is recognized as UNESCO intangible heritage and symbolizes the resistance of the people of Sinj against the powerful Ottoman army in 1715. The Museum of Cetina Region was established in 1956 and is responsible for preserving the cultural and historical heritage of the area. In 2021, it celebrated its 65th anniversary with a renovation and a new permanent exhibition organized thematically.Throughout history, the Cetina region has been a strategic area often attacked by the Ottomans, particularly in the Middle Ages. Feudal families, most notably the Nelipić family, built fortresses to defend against Turkish attacks. These fortresses were established on prehistoric settlements, with the most significant being Prozor, Glavaš, Travnik, the Old Town in Sinj, Gardun, and Nutjak. All these fortresses testify to the rich history of the Cetina region and its strategic importance over the centuries. The valuation of tourist resources is crucial in planning the spatial development of tourism, and as an example of valuation, specific resources are linked to their value in the valuation process. These resources provide the foundation for developing the tourism offer, emphasizing the preservation of cultural heritage and historical traditions. The fourth chapter presents the research section of the work, including methodology, results, and recommendations for further research. The study was conducted through structured interviews with tourism stakeholders in the city of Sinj and the Cetina region to gather objective information about tourism resources and promotional activities. The research consisted of nine open-ended questions aimed at gauging stakeholders' awareness of cultural tourism in the Cetina region and the development of cultural offerings and tourism resources. Respondents highlighted natural resources and transportation connections as key potentials for tourism development. They believe that the Cetina region can become an essential destination for cultural tourists due to its rich cultural heritage and events. Finally, the research indicates a need for further work on promoting and developing sustainable tourism to achieve year-round tourism in the Cetina region. The Cetina region hides numerous cultural resources, including the knightly game Alka, which holds significant historical and cultural value. Although tourism is not yet fully developed, similar studies can aid in its further development. The last chapter analyzes previous research on cultural tourism in the Cetina region, focusing on the results of interviews with respondents. The main research questions pertain to the current offerings and ways to enhance them. The study shows that cultural tourism in the Cetina region is heavily focused on a single historical event, while other resources that could aid in promotion are somewhat neglected. The need for diversity in the offerings is suggested, combining material and immaterial heritage. In response to the overall research, the following cultural routes have been proposed to guide tourists in exploring the Cetina region: "Paths of Ottoman Conquests," which connects key fortresses from the Ottoman period, allowing tourists to explore the history and connections between them, with detailed descriptions provided via an app. "Antiquity in the Cetina Region" focuses on Roman sites such as Tilurium and Aequum, linking archaeological remains with museum exhibits showcasing life in ancient times. Both routes enable tourists to gain a deeper understanding of the history and culture of the Cetina region, promoting the development of sustainable tourism in the area
koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist
We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
