Lydia S. Wierman letter to Thomas Earl
Letter from Lydia S. Wierman to Thomas Earl of Philadelphia, care of George Forman. Wierman's letter has been truncated somewhat -- here, we have only pages 4 and 5 of what presumably is a longer letter. Weirman speaks eloquently and passionately about the life and work of her brother, abolitionist Benjamin Lundy. Page 4 of the letter opens in the midst of recounting a story by which someone crawls to safety in a wintry woods. The letter continues in a consideration of Lundy's tremendous life's work in abolitionism from Wierman's perspective. Benjamin Lundy (1789-1839) was a prominent Quaker abolitionist best known for his development of abolitionist periodicals. His Genius of Universal Emancipation was first published in 1821 from his home in Mt. Pleasant, Ohio, and enjoyed a wide circulation across the antebellum United States. In the 1820s, the young William Lloyd Garrison came to work for The Genius. Benjamin Lundy traveled widely seeking subscriptions to The Genius, giving talks a
Contrapunteos de Lydia Cabrera
Even today in the history of Cuban anthropology, little attention is paid to the writer and anthropologist Lydia Cabrera, who has only recently begun to be part of the list of intellectuals in official Cuban culture. However, because of her work and life trajectory, Cabrera can be considered the modern founder of studies on Afro-Cuban religions.
The main purpose of this text is to analyse Lydia Cabrera’s ethnographic work based on the idea that there was a ‘counterpoint’, a dialogue, a metaphorical game, between the liminal identity of the author herself – manifested in a racial, cultural, gender, social and political sense – and her interest and dedication to the contribution of slaves and the population of African origin to the history, culture and, ultimately, the identity of their Cuban homeland.
In 1912 Hjalmar Söderberg wrote what came to be a Swedish classic, The serious game, about the two young lovers Lydia and Arvid and their failed attempts to be with each other. 1973 Gun-Britt Sundström responded with her own novel, For Lydia, that tells the same story but from Lydia´s point of view. This essay discusses if the macro perspective, Sundström´s tendency in giving Lydia an agency, can be seen in the structure of the language, the micro perspective. To enable this, the essay has been using parts of the narratology theory founded in the 1960’s that was partly produced by Gérard Genette and supplemented by Mieke Bal. Looking at focalization (from what angle the story is told), it is possible to investigate what kind of information the reader can assimilate of Lydia and her progress. Susan Lanser defined feminist narratology and in accordance to her theory the essay examines the context and author of the novel to fully understand the writings. Sundström in a higher degree than Söderberg includes intern focalization when it comes to Lydia, which gives the reader more information about Lydia and her agency. Söderberg focalizes Arvid rather than Lydia which gives the reader the impression that Lydia acts selfish and unaccountable. Both novels arose in circumstances characterized by female emancipation and by regarding that, a more prominent picture of Sundström´s intention to make For Lydia a feministic response to The serious game can be seen. In conclusion, the essay shows that, the tendency of Sundström, to make a feministic response to Söderberg´s novel, can be seen even in the micro perspective of the language

Assessing the Applicability of the Bartlett-Lewis Model in Simulating Residential Water Demands
AbstractThis paper presents the set-up and application of the Bartlett-Lewis clustering mechanism to simulate residential water demand at fine, i.e. sub-hourly, time scales. Two different variants of the model, i.e., the original and the random-parameter model, are examined. The models are assessed in terms of preserving the main statistical characteristics and temporal properties of demand series at a range of fine time scales, i.e., from 1-min up to 15-min. The comparison against the typical Poisson rectangular pulse model showed that clustering mechanism enables a better reproduction of demand characteristics at levels of aggregation other than those used in the fitting procedure
Fast Feedback Methods in Teaching G7 Physics
Current literature shows that providing students with feedback plays a vital role in learning and improving student achievement. This study sought to determine the effect of using the Fast Feedback Methods (FFM) on the students’ learning in terms of their mastery of the content and their intrinsic motivation to learn physics. The framework was based on the premise that there has to be a continuous interaction between teacher and students to check on students’ conceptual progress (or lack thereof) and to provide constructive feedback in order to promote learning. The methodology was patterned from a local research of van den Berg (2003). Fast feedback is a method which involves the whole class with the students working individually but at the same pace through a set of questions that may be answered in the form of short responses, sketches, graphs, or drawings. The said approach is given at the end of each lesson as a form of formative assessment. In this study, FFM were not only utilized in the class but were also given through online assignments. Class observations were made to ensure that the conduct of classes adhere to the FFM protocol. An intact section of Grade 7 students from a public school in a major city in the Philippines were purposely selected as respondents. Data for FFM’s effect in terms of students’ mastery were obtained from the formative assessment instruments and posttest, while the intrinsic motivation was explored using a modified Intrinsic Motivation Inventory (IMI). Statistical analysis was performed. Selected students were interviewed to triangulate the results. It was found out that FFM had a positive effect on the students’ mastery of the content. In addition, the IMI result revealed that the students have a high level of intrinsic motivation to learn physics when they are engaged in FFM. © 2017 American Scientific Publishers All rights reserved
