Sublittoral soft bottom communities and diversity of Mejillones Bay in northern Chile (Humboldt Current upwelling system)
The macrozoobenthos of Mejillones Bay (23°S; Humboldt Current) was quantitatively investigated over a 7-year period from austral summer 1995/1996 to winter 2002. About 78 van Veen grab samples taken at six stations (5, 10, 20 m depth) provided the basis for the analysis of the distribution of 60 species and 28 families of benthic invertebrates, as well as of their abundance and biomass. Mean abundance (2,119 individuals m-2) was in the same order compared to a previous investigation; mean biomass (966 g formalin wet mass m-2), however, exceeded prior estimations mainly due to the dominance of the bivalve Aulacomya ater. About 43% of the taxa inhabited the complete depth range. Mean taxonomic Shannon diversity (H', Log e) was 1.54 ± 0.58 with a maximum at 20 m (1.95 ± 0.33); evenness increased with depth. The fauna was numerically dominated by carnivorous gastropods, polychaetes and crustaceans (48%). About 15% of the species were suspensivorous, 13% sedimentivorous, 11% detritivorous, 7% omnivorous and 6% herbivorous. Cluster analyses showed a significant difference between the shallow and the deeper stations. Gammarid amphipods and the polychaete family Nephtyidae characterized the 5-mzone, the molluscs Aulacomya ater, Mitrella unifasciata and gammarids the intermediate zone, while the gastropod Nassarius gayi and the polychaete family Nereidae were most prominent at the deeper stations. The communities of the three depth zones did not appear to be limited by hypoxia during non-El Niño conditions. Therefore, no typical change in community structure occurred during El Niño 1997–1998, in contrast to what was observed for deeper faunal assemblages and hypoxic bays elsewhere in the coastal Humboldt Current system

Impact of the parton distribution function uncertainties on the measurement of the W boson mass at the Tevatron and the LHC
We study at a quantitative level the impact of the uncertainties on the value of the W boson mass measured at hadron colliders due to: i) the proton parton distribution functions (PDFs), ii) the value of the strong coupling constant αs and iii) the value of the charm mass used in the PDF determination. The value of the W boson mass is extracted, by means of a template fit technique, from the lepton-pair transverse mass distribution measured in the charged current Drell-Yan process. We study the determination of mW at the Tevatron and at the LHC with 7 and 14 TeV of center-of-mass energy in a realistic experimental setup. The analysis has been done at the Born level using the event generator HORACE and at NLO-QCD using the event generators DYNNLO and RESBOS. We consider the three global PDF sets, CTEQ6.6, MSTW2008, and NNPDF2.1. We estimate that the total PDF uncertainty on mW is below 10 MeV both at the Tevatron and at the LHC for all energies and final states. We conclude that PDF uncertainties do not challenge a measurement of the W boson mass at the level of 10 MeV accuracy
Shadowgraphy of the end-effects regime produced by clustered rockets
The plume produced by a cluster of two high area-ratio thrust optimized parabolic contour nozzles is visualized by way of retroreflective shadowgraphy. Both steady and transient operations of the nozzles (start-up and shut-down) were conducted in the anechoic chamber and high speed flow facility at The University of Texas at Austin. Both nozzles exhibit free shock separated flow, restricted shock separated flow and an end-effects-regime prior to flowing full. Radon transforms of the shadowgraphy images are used to identify the locations in the flow where sound waves are being generated. During these off design operations of the nozzles, most sound waves are generated by turbulence interactions with the shock cells located in the supersonic annular plume. During the end-effects-regime, this supersonic annular plume is shown to flap violently, thus providing a first principals understanding of the sources of most intense loads during engine ignition
