    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    The population increase in Mexico has demanded an increase of the drinking water and sewer nets. This has brought the construction of waste water treatment plants (WWTP), a fact that has generated more waste water treatment and, at the same time, an increase of the waste sludge produced. Waste sludge is an environmental problem given the quantities, volumes and contamination it generates. Sludge can be used to produce electric energy, though, by the use of anaerobic digestion systems. For instance Mexico alone generates about 640.000 tons of waste sludge a year. The scope of this article is to analyze from an interdisciplinary viewpoint, at a world scale, the use of biosolids to produce energy and be the basis to develop such type of projects in Mexico.El aumento de la población en México ha hecho que se incremente la red de agua potable y drenaje; ello ha dado lugar a la construcción de plantas de tratamiento de aguas residuales (PTAR), lo que ha implicado mayor tratamiento de agua residual y, a su vez, un incremento en la cantidad de lodos residuales producidos. Los lodos residuales representan un problema ambiental por las cantidades, volúmenes y contaminación que generan; sin embargo, pueden aprovecharse para producir energía eléctrica por medio de sistemas de digestión anaeróbica; tan solo en México se generan alrededor de 640.000 toneladas anuales de lodos residuales.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Los sistemas complejos permiten evaluar sistemas cuya interacción de procesos y elementos es tal, que deben de analizarse como un conjunto para poder resolver los problemas que presenten. Las plantas de tratamiento de aguas residuales (PTAR) pueden considerarse como sistema complejo debido a que sus procesos están íntimamente relacionados y generan nuevos procesos no previstos que no pueden subdividirse para analizar y modificar de forma independiente. Debido a lo anterior se realiza un análisis de la PTAR “El Naranjo” con capacidad de 500 litros por segundo, operada por la Comisión Estatal de Servicios Públicos de Ensenada (CESPE), ubicada en Baja California (B.C.), México, desde una visión de sistema complejo, ya que este tipo de análisis permitió identificar nuevos procesos generados a partir de sus múltiples interacciones e identificar impactos ambientales potenciales para dar una propuesta de solución, que eficientice la operación de la PTAR y genere un menor impacto ambiental y social.Complex systems are used to evaluate systems, whose interaction in their processes and elements make them up, because it should be analyzed as a whole in the way to be able to modify or solve problems in the system. The case of wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) are considered as complex system because they perform processes that are close related and generate new processes that can’t be subdivided to analyze them and modify independently. For this reason is important to make an analysis from complex system vision of the WWTP “El Naranjo” with capacity of 500 mgd, operated by Comision Estatal de Servicios Publicos de Ensenada (CESPE), located in the city of Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico. This analysis identified new processes generated from their multiple interactions and potential environmental impacts giving recommendations and proposals to make the operation of the WWTP efficient and decrease the environmental and social impacts.Os sistemas complexos são usados para avaliar os sistemas em que a interação de processos e elementos é tal que deve ser analisada como um todo, de modo a compreender os seus problemas. A estação de tratamento de esgoto (ETE) pode ser considerada como um sistema complexo, pois os processos realizados estão intimamente relacionadas e é impossivel criar novos processos que não podem ser subdivididas para analisar e modificar de forma independente. Devido a isso, uma análise da ETE “El Naranjo”, com capacidade de 500 litros por segundo, operados pela Comisión Estatal de Servicios Públicos de Ensenada (CESPE), localizado na cidade de Ensenada, Baja California, no México, a partir de uma visão de sistema complexo, uma vez que este tipo de análise identificou novos processos gerados a partir de suas múltiplas interações e identificou potenciais impactos ambientais de uma proposta de solução, que melhore a eficiência do funcionamento da ETE e gerar menor impacto ambiental e social

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
