R2-elevers modelleringskompetanse
Impact of travel restrictions on the spread of infection
With the outbreak of Covid-19 it has become more important to know how
to deal with a large scale epidemic effectively. Governments utilize different
methods to try and contain the spread of viruses, to different results. But what
does modeling say about the way to approach the problem? The purpose of
the thesis is to introduce a modification of a popular SIR model for the spread
of infectious diseases which allows to explore the impact of travel. The group
of susceptible individuals S is split into two subgroups in accordance with the
travel patterns: S1 (traveling individuals) and S2 (not traveling individuals).
Stability properties of infection-free and endemic equilibria are studied with
respect to the basic reproduction number. Numerous numerical simulations
illustrate the dynamics of the system, including its modifications based on the
introduction of the delayed argument. The results of the theoretical analysis
and numerical simulations are compared to the recent empirical data to provide
practical advice to local and governmental policy makers
Mathematical model of salmon life cycle
The goal of this thesis is to cast biological data available in the research literature into a deterministic stage-structured discrete model described by a system of difference equations accounting for all important stages in the life cycle of Atlantic salmon. Sensitivity and elasticity analyses of the model are conducted along with numerous numerical simulations to provide practical
recommendations regarding the impact of the changes to survival rates at different stages on the dynamics of the entire population
The development of students’ mathematical competencies : The case of biology students
This research focuses on the development of mathematical competencies of first-year university students in a Biology department as they engage in nonroutine open-ended mathematical tasks set in the context of biology. The research employs a scaling instrument on a modified extant competence framework to identify evidence of student competency development by exploring situations where students activate particular mathematical competencies. The scaling instrument is designed to evaluate the quality of competence activation. The research creates individual competency profiles for volunteer students who participated in a series of calculus classes addressing several mathematical areas over one semester. The research also explores whether the activation of the distinct mathematical competencies are interrelated exploring instances of concurrent activation. The findings suggest competency development for a subset of competencies. There is evidence that specific mathematical domains facilitate or hinder the development of specific mathematical competencies. Furthermore, there are indications that the activation of specific competencies hinder or favor the concurrent activation of specific other competencies. This research highlights techniques that may advance the study of students’ assessment and evaluation concerning the acquisition of mathematical knowledge. It provides evidence that the employment of a competency scaling scheme can provide information regarding the quality of students’ competence activation This study also comprises implications for new student assessment methods where the teacher can obtain a more detailed picture of each student’s performance by creating a competence profile where the weaknesses and strengths of the students are on full display.publishedVersio
State-of-the-Art Mathematical Applications in Europe
Under one cover, this reprint collects twelve original research papers and one review paper submitted to the Special Issue “State-of-the-Art Mathematical Applications in Europe” and published in the MDPI journal Mathematics from December 2021 to January 2023. This Special Issue published original research papers from European researchers and their collaborators on popular topics in all fields of mathematics. The Editors received papers from Spain, Slovenia, Romania, Italy, Greece, Russia, Montenegro, and Turkey. Most of the contributions were related to various fields in applied mathematics, and several papers addressed problems in pure mathematics, particularly algebra
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
On the asymptotic behavior of solutions to a class of third-order nonlinear neutral differential equations
By using comparison principles, we analyze the asymptotic behavior of solutions to a class of third-order nonlinear neutral differential equations. Due to less restrictive assumptions on the coefficients of the equation and on the deviating argument, our criteria improve a number of related results reported in the literature
Promoting engineering students’ learning with mathematical modelling projects
Mathematics constitutes a key component in engineering education. Engineering students are traditionally offered a number of mathematics courses which provide the knowledge needed at the workplace. Unfortunately, many students perceive mathematics as a discipline that teaches mostly procedures not relevant to their future careers and often view it as one of the main obstacles on their way to an engineering degree. In this paper, we discuss how introducing university students in a standard Differential Equations course to mathematical modelling (MM), a powerful strategy for solving real-life problems, contributes to the development of their mathematical competencies, motivates their interest to mathematics, promotes the use of advanced mathematical thinking, methods of applied mathematics, and digital computational tools
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
