Differential stability of 2'F-ANA*RNA and ANA*RNA hybrid duplexes: roles of structure, pseudohydrogen bonding, hydration, ion uptake and flexibility
No full text14 pags., 7 figs., 3 tabs.Hybrids of RNA with arabinonucleic acids 2′F-ANA and ANA have very similar structures but strikingly different thermal stabilities. We now present a thorough study combining NMR and other biophysical methods together with state-of-the-art theoretical calculations on a fully modified 10-mer hybrid duplex. Comparison between the solution structure of 2′F-ANA•RNA and ANA•RNA hybrids indicates that the increased binding affinity of 2′F-ANA is related to several subtle differences, most importantly a favorable pseudohydrogen bond (2′F-purine H8) which contrasts with unfavorable 2′-OH-nucleobase steric interactions in the case of ANA. While both 2′F-ANA and ANA strands maintained conformations in the southern/eastern sugar pucker range, the 2′F-ANA strand's structure was more compatible with the A-like structure of a hybrid duplex. No dramatic differences are found in terms of relative hydration for the two hybrids, but the ANA•RNA duplex showed lower uptake of counterions than its 2′F-ANA•RNA counterpart. Finally, while the two hybrid duplexes are of similar rigidities, 2′F-ANA single strands may be more suitably preorganized for duplex formation. Thus the dramatically increased stability of 2′F-ANA•RNA and ANA•RNA duplexes is caused by differencesin at least four areas, of which structure and pseudohydrogen bonding are the most important. © The Author(s) 2010. No full textThis chapter aims at portraying José Júlio Bettencourt Rodrigues (1843-1893), professor of chemistry at the Lisbon Polytechnic School, by cross-cheeking information obtained from documentary and material sources: archives, the space of the Laboratório Chimico and the chemistry collections kept by the museum of Science of the University of Lisbon (MCUL). Despite the difficulties such an approach might pose, namely the facto that these collections have not yet been wholly catalogued, it is worth attempting a convergence of “words” and “objects”.

Perioperative Goal-Setting Consultations by Surgical Colleagues: A New Model for Supporting Patients, Families, and Surgeons in Shared Decision Making
No full textPatients with postoperative complications are often subjected to prolonged life-sustaining treatment based on erroneous assumptions about their goals of care. Shared decision making is an evidence-based approach that helps ensure patients’ wishes and values are honored in their course of treatment. Perioperative palliative care can help create goal-concordant trajectories of care for high risk, seriously ill, or complicated patients, through sophisticated prognostication, higher-level communication, and recommendations based on the best available evidence and patients’ stated goals and priorities. Here, we present a surgeon-to-surgeon consultative model that surmounts many barriers to perioperative palliative care consultation and, as illustrated in the cases presented herein, offers profound and unique benefits for patients, families, and surgeons alike. While the support of a surgical colleague with palliative care skills can be helpful postoperatively in the setting of unanticipated outcomes or prolonged recovery, it is particularly beneficial when accessed preoperatively for the purposes of goal-concordant decision making and advance care planning. We encourage both individuals and professional societies to develop and expand the niche for surgeons interested in assisting with goal setting and shared decision making for patients on a consultative basis, particularly in the preoperative period
A "tradução" do paradigma etiológico de criminologia no Brasil: um diálogo entre Cesare Lombroso e Nina Rodrigues da perspectiva centro-margem

(processo complexo que inclui várias técnicas, se afastando, assim, da mera recepção) da teoria lombrosiana e principalmente do paradigma fundado pela Criminologia Positivista, funcional ao controle social no Centro (Europa), realizada por Raimundo Nina Rodrigues para o controle racial na Margem (Brasil) no pós-abolição. Em seu contexto original, aquele paradigma, consolidado na obra L?Uomo Delinquente, possibilitou a seleção e segregação de uma minoria ?anormal? visando seu disciplinamento através de estabelecimentos correcionais, mas sua concepção se encontra na primeira obra de Lombroso, L?uomo bianco e l?uomo do colore: letture sull?origine e la varietà delle razze umane, cuja tradução literal inédita se faz necessária para a compreensão pretendida, procurando, além do resgate de seu racismo negado, marcar as permanências e rupturas (se houver) durante a travessia atlântica. Nesse trajeto, desvelamos a construção de seus ?Outros? que nos leva à construção, muito além do centro, de sua espécie mais primitiva: o negro. Para ter sua funcionalidade assegurada em um contexto periférico singular, marcado pelo recente fim do maior sistema escravagista do mundo, a teoria do criminoso nato possibilitou a manutenção da ordem racial atravessando o quadro teórico liberal da jovem República ao ter retomada sua matriz racista, reforçada e potencializada pelo médico brasileiro, legítimo representante da classe escravagista, pelo ecletismo teórico-racial central, criando um discurso que considerou o negro e seus descendentes, a maioria da população brasileira, nossos criminosos natos e obstáculos ao desenvolvimento e progresso nacional. Neste sentido, Nina Rodrigues esboçou um modelo de controle racial projetado sob um paradigma original que atendia as necessidades de ordem da sociedade brasileira deslegitimando o discurso teórico liberal em relação aos ?inferiores? que deveria ser restrito aos ?superiores?, a raça branca e ariana, defendendo um apartheid brasileiro estribado na cientificidade racial central ao mesmo tempo em que endossava e desvelava as práticas punitivistas escravagistas responsáveis pela contenção do caos ao perseguir os negros em sua ?liberdade?.Resumen : Este trabajo tiene como objetivo principal entender que razón y cómo operalizou la "traducción" (proceso complejo que incluye varias técnicas, alejándose, así, la simple recepción) de la teoría lombrosiana y sobre todo el paradigma establecido por la Criminología Positivista, funcional para el control social en el Centro (Europa) ocupado por Raimundo Nina Rodrigues al control racial en el margen (Brasil) en el post-abolición. En su contexto original, el paradigma tiene sus raíces en la obra L'Uomo Delincuente, que permitió la selección y segregación de una minoría "anormal" en busca de su disciplina a través de los establecimientos penitenciarios, pero su concepción se encuentra en la primera obra de Lombroso, bianco L'uomo y l'uomo do colores: letture sull origine e la varietà delle razze umane, cuya traducción literal sin precedentes se requiere para la comprensión deseada, buscando, además de rescatar a su racismo negada, marque las continuidades y rupturas (si las hay) para la travesía del Atlántico. En este camino, develamos la construcción de su "otro" que nos lleva a la construcción, mucho más allá del centro, sus especies más primitivas: el negro. Para tener la seguridad de su funcionalidad en un contexto periférico especifico, marcado por un fin reciente del sistema esclavista más grande en el mundo, la teoría del delincuente nato posibilito mantener el orden racial a través del marco teórico liberal de la joven República, reanudó su matriz racista y mejorada impulsado por el médico brasileño, legítimo representante de la clase del esclavo, por el eclecticismo teórico y racial central, la creación de un discurso que considera el negro y sus descendientes, la mayoría de la población, los delincuentes y los obstáculos para el desarrollo y el progreso nacional. En este sentido, Nina Rodrigues dio un modelo de control racial diseñado en un paradigma único que respondía a las necesidades de orden de la sociedad brasileña, deslegitimando el discurso teórico liberal en relación con el "inferior" que debería limitarse a "superior", la raza blanca y aria la defensa de un apartheid brasileño estribado en la cientificidad racial del centro, tiempo que respalda y desvelava prácticas punitivistas esclavagistas responsables para la contención del caos para perseguir los negros en su "libertad"

No full textEste trabalho apresenta comentários a respeito do artigo“Quando Expressões Nominais Quantificadas podem sertopicalizadas” de Aguiar & Rodrigues. As autoras exploram aestrutura de concha larsoniana para os DPs e defendem quesão tópicos tanto DPs quantificados que apresentam ummodificador restritivo explícito, quanto aqueles em que se temum modificador implícito. Com base no resultado da aplicaçãode testes de topicidade (KATO, 1998), reitero a possibilidade de DPs partitivos com modificadores explícitos poderem funcionar como tópicos, mas questiono essa possibilidade em relação aos quantificadores nus, que, sugiro, constituem um tipo de foco de identificação (KISS, 1998). Saliento a necessidade de se precisar a natureza da restrição semântica imposta aos tópicos, argumentando a favor da noção de specificidade. Reitero a importância de as autoras definirem tipo de análise a assumir: se lexicalista ou sintática, que implicará explicitar como a estrutura larsoniana poderiapermitir um cálculo composicional dos traços do DP ou em que medida seria necessário adotar reformulações ou expansões à estrutura larsoniana.Some comments on Aguiar & Rodrigues’s paper are offered.Aguiar & Rodrigues argue that quantified DPs with an explicit modifier as well as bare quantifiers with implicit modifiersmay be topics. They assume a larsonian DP structure in whichD takes the modifier as its complement and the noun as therestrictor. Based on some tests on topicality (KATO, 1998), Ishow that partitive DPs with explicit modifiers may be topicsbut not bare quantifiers with implicit modifiers, which I suggestare an instance of identificational focus (KISS, 1998). I arguefor the need of assuming specificity as the accurate notionconcerning the kind of semantic restriction imposed on topics.Based on that, I suggest that Aguiar & Rodrigues should definehow the specific restriction on topics would be achieved forpartitive DPs with quantifiers from a compositional calculuson the larsonian structure or whether additional assumptionswould have to be made in relation to the larsonianconfiguration
