Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
Get PDFWe conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

Issues of Criticism and Authorship in Arthur Miller's All My Sons : A Bakhtinian Reading
No full textAll my Sons may not be Miller's most known work today but it is the play that brought him recognition as a playwright. Since its first production in 1947 critics have assessed the play's content and characters through Arthur Miller's words and biography. This kind of approach elevated Miller to the status of Author-God consequently transforming the play into a monologic work. Mikhail Bakhtin however reconsiders the notion of authorship proposing a model of dialogic author and heteroglossic text. In view of these issues this thesis analyzes All My Sons through the lens of Bakhtin's theory especially his argument regarding authorship and the philosophy of the act.

No full text"Choicest Varieties of Celery" is the headline next to a drawing of Kalamazoo celery, a new variety promoted on p. 11 of the trade catalog "Beautiful Flowers from the Calla Greenhouses, Calla, Ohio" (1899). The illustration shows a bunch of celery with the letters of the name "Kalamazoo" arranged in a vertical column. The catalog was published by Lewis Templin and Sons Seed Company (Calla, Ohio), which was among the largest mail-order seed houses in the United States during the mid- to late 1800s. Pennsylvania native Lewis Templin moved to Ohio in 1822 and started his nursery in 1845 in Canfield. In 1866 Templin and four sons built a greenhouse at Loveland Station (later renamed "Calla"). The business had a well-deserved reputation for quality products and for generating its financial success solely from small, individual orders. Templin's son Mark produced the firm's catalogs, including "Beautiful Flowers from the Calla Greenhouses." An estimated 300,000 catalogs were distributed annually. A fire destroyed the company's entire spring crop in January 1892, but afterwards the firm rebuilt on an even larger scale. Lewis Templin died in 1899. His sons continued operating the business until 1907, when increased competition and rising costs caused it to fail

On the education of the sons of Constantine the Great
No full textThe present article is devoted to the problem of education of Constantine’s the Great (306–337 AD) sons. Constantine gained the im-perial title in 306 AD and kept it for thirty years — longer than any of roman emperors after Augustus. Constantine united the Roman Empire under his sole rule and built an imperial dynasty. Constan-tine’s sons (Crispus, Constantine the Younger, Constantius and Constans) considered as his natural heirs. Emperor raised all of them in the dignity of the Caesars. The reign of Constantine was preceded by the Tetrarchy of emperor Diocletian (284–305 AD); according to its constitution experienced commanders and administrators were brought to power. Quite the opposite, according to Constantine's dy-nastic plans his heirs should be prepared for the adoption of power. Consequently, it is important to concentrate on the question of their education. Author of the present article analyses three accounts of Constantine’s the Great sons education, left by Eusebius, Julian and Libanius. The author comes to the conclusion that the emperor gave his sons a comprehensive education that includes both general disci-plines and special knowledge that they need to govern the state in fu-ture. Special attention is paid to the reports, that Constantine took an active part in education of his sons. According to Libanius, he had formulated a special political and philosophical concept of imperial power based on the ruler’s desire for “genuine love” from his people. In the course of his research, the author touches upon the question of the tutors of young Caesars

No full textResearch objective: To analyze historical sources and modern studies of the rule of Ulugh Muhammad’s sons in the Khanate of Kazan.
Research materials: On the basis of study of a wide range of sources (the Russian chronicles, books of official orders in the Russian state, ambassadorial documents, historical acts, the Turko-Tatar narrative sources, notes of foreigner visitors, etc.) and specialized modern research works, the author of this article reveals the problems of representation of the Khanate of Kazan’s history during the period of Ulugh Muhammad’s sons’ rule.
Research results and novelty: The author gave a special place in the research methodology to textological and hermeneutic analysis. Due to this, the author managed not only to verify the information of various sources, but also to interpret certain historical information on the basis of the context of sources that were considered authentic in that era. The author of the article is inclined to think that the succession of power from Ulugh Muhammad to Mahmud was legitimate. He clarifies the chronological framework of the rule and political status of the first Kazan khans, criticizes the arguments of modern historians, and puts forward a hypothesis about the rule in Kazan of Mustafa bin Ulugh Muhammad. As a result of the research, the author managed to adjust the perception of political history of the Khanate of Kazan during the rule of Ulugh Muhammad’s sons
