Molecular Dynamics Study of Wettability and Pitch Effects on Maximum Critical Heat Flux in Evaporation and Pool Boiling Heat Transfer
No full textMolecular dynamics (MD) simulations were employed to investigate the effects of wettability (contact angle) and pitch on nanoscale evaporation and pool boiling heat transfer of a liquid argon thin film on a horizontal copper substrate topped with cubic nano-pillars. The liquid-solid potential was incrementally altered in order to vary the contact angle between hydrophilic (~0°) and hydrophobic (~127°), and the pitch (distance between nano-pillars) was varied between 21.7Å and 106.6Å to observe the resultant effect on boiling heat transfer enhancement. For each contact angle the superheat was gradually increased to initiate nucleate boiling and eventually pass the critical heat flux (CHF) into the film boiling regime. The CHF increases significantly with pitch (up to 57%), and tends to increase substantially with decreasing contact angle. A maximum overall heat flux of 1.59x108 W/m2 occurs at the largest pitch investigated (106.6Å), and as the contact angle increases the superheat required to reach the CHF condition also increases. Finally, in certain cases of small pitch and large contact angle, the liquid film was seen to transition to a Cassie-Baxter state, which greatly hindered heat transfer.Peer reviewe
A molecular dynamics study of phobic/philic nano-patterning on pool boiling heat transfer
No full textMolecular dynamics (MD) simulations were employed to investigate the pool boiling heat transfer of a liquid argon thin film on a flat, horizontal copper wall structured with vertical nanoscale pillars. The efficacy of phobic/philic nano-patterning for enhancing boiling heat transfer was scrutinized. Both nucleate and explosive boiling modes were considered. An error analysis demonstrated that the typical 2.5σ cutoff in MD simulations could under-predict heat flux by about 8.7%, and 6σ cutoff was chosen here in order to maintain high accuracy. A new coordination number criterion was also introduced to better quantify evaporation characteristics. Results indicate that the argon-phobic/philic patterning tends to either have no effect, or decrease overall boiling heat flux, while the argon-philic nano-pillar/argon-philic wall shows the best heat transfer performance.Peer reviewe

From Transcendentalism to Progressivism: The Making of an American Reformer, Abby Morton Diaz (1821-1904).
No full textAuthor and activist Abby Morton Diaz (1821-1904) was a member of the Brook Farm Transcendental community from 1842 until it folded in 1847. Although critics have long recognized that Brook Farm played a role in Diaz\u27s intellectual preparation, they have not attempted to demonstrate its influence through a study of her writings.
In this study I will examine in detail two of Diaz\u27s novels and two long essays, with passing references to other works, that reveal how the utopian socialism practiced at Brook Farm influenced Diaz as a writer and reformer. In all her writings Diaz emphasized the importance of education for women so that they may successfully fulfill their roles as wives, mothers, and their children\u27s first teachers.
Her philosophy is reflected in the reform initiatives she supported: the Women\u27s Educational and Industrial Union and the Nationalist Party

No full textAs we enter the era of bullshitology, methods of evaluating ‘authenticity’ become even more necessary. Celebrity writers of color, like all writers, have to present themselves as themselves in literary discourse. However, due to the discursive tendency to pigeonhole authors of color, such authors instead construct a public persona to negotiate the paradoxical position they inhabit within the discourse. Junot Diaz, author of Pulitzer Prize-winning The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, presents himself differently across different communicative contexts, by indexing existing metapragmatic stereotypes regarding the ‘authentic’ author. The results emerge as demonstrating Diaz’s style-shifts that occur according to the size of the communicative contexts. The smaller the communicative platform, the more Diaz assuredly esists pigeonholing. Similarly, the larger the platform, the more Diaz capitulates towards pre-determined discursive labels. Such an outcome underlines the challenge contemporary authors face in order to remain viable and exert influence over prevailing cultural conversations
