    Banks now a day's plan to lay greater stress on consumer banking in the coming years, with a view to achieve higher market penetration and profitability. Technology has paved way for expanding the horizon of consumer banking and has smartened up the said business of banking. In the pre liberalization days, banking was considered as a chore you would like to finish off as quickly as possible. Today, the scenario is totally different. Banks driven by the ever growing competition have improvised on existing features and created new facilities that are more customers friendly. Growing Indian middle class today has a disposable surplus income and aspires for a better lifestyle. The busy business executive needs cash at any time, at all places and is willing to pay extra for this service. .New breed of financial services brand viz. Convenience banking, anywhere banking, tell banking, branchless banking and on line banking have appeared on the banking landscape.     The priority for ideas and philosophy related to "Network Theory" have been traced back and documented by Braun(2004),and credit goes to Karinthy(1929).The IT has empowered to realise it, as the most practical phenomena and it is no more a humour. The OAI (Open Archives Initiatives)and ACIS (Academic Contributor Information System)are progressive in the direction ,which may lead to realise the "Collective Genius" at global level. Focus of present study is on Author-Self-Archiving (A-S-A)Metadata of the 983 Eprints in the Live Archives of the E-LIS (EPrints of Library and Information Science),which were approved till 7th July 2004.The A-S-A Metadata was used for librametric analysis.     Leland H. Hartwell was honoured with the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (2001) at his 62 years age and at 41 years of research publishing career. The first contribution of the author was in 1961 at the age of 22. The number of his contributions in a year peaked in 1997 when it touched 8. He had 108 publications during 1961 – 2001 in domains: Molecular Biology of Cell Cycle Regulation (43), Genetics of Cell Division (48), Genomic Re-arrangement and DNA Repair (9), Molecular Genetics of Yeast Cell Fission (5), and Drug Target Interaction (3) which were analysed for authorship pattern with his 101 collaborators. Most active researchers having number of publications with Leland H. Hartwell were : Weinert, T. A. (10), Garvik, B. M. (8), McLaughlin, C. S. (8), Jenness, D. D. (5). His productivity coefficient was 0.76 which clearly indicates that his productivity increased after 50 percentile age. Highest collaboration coefficient (1) for Leland H. Hartwell was found during 1963-1965, 1968-1969, 1977, 1981-1983, 1985-1990, 1996 and 1998-2001. Journals have been the most preferred channel of communication where, as many as 96 papers out of 108 have been published. The core journals publishing his papers were: Cell (14), Genetics (12), Mol.     Scientometric Portrait of Homi Jehangir Bhabha: The Father of Indian Nuclear Research Programme

    Quantitative and qualitative analysis with graphic representation of the publication productivity of a scientist facilitates easy and clear perception about the work of a scientist. Bhabha’s scientific work spanned over more than three decades (1933-1967) during which he published 104 publications, which could be classified into nine fields: Interaction of Radiation with Matter (4), Quantum Electrodynamics (5), Mathematical Physics (2), Cosmic Ray Physics (18), Elementary Particle Physics (14), Field Theory (15), General Physics (2), Nuclear Physics (4) and General (40). The highest number of publications (6) were published in 1941, 1945 and 1964 respectively. The average number of publications published per year was 3.05. His productivity coefficient was 0.05 which is a clear indicates that his publication productivity was quite consistent throughout his scientific career. He was single author in 79 of his publications and the main author in 24 publications indicates that he always preferred to work himself and lead the team as ‘mentor’. Bhabha had 22 collaborators during the period. Team of research collaborators working with a successful scientist documents the sociological aspect of history of science while generating knowledge by a leader in a domain. Bhabha became a citable author in 1937. Bhabha received 1211 citations to his 30 publications out of 104 publications. Out of 104, 74 publications did not receive any citations. Out of 74 publications, 40 publications dealt subjects mainly of general interest. Bhabha’s 86.66 percent of cited publications received their first citations within four years of their publication indicates that his publications were noticed immediately and had direct impact among the fellow researchers working all over the world. His overall citation rate was 11.64 per cited publication. The highest citations 389 were received to the domain ‘Cosmic ray physics’. The highest number of citations received were 45 in 1938. His self-citations were only 24 (1.98%) and citations by others were 1187 (98.02%). The highest self citations were six in 1946. Bhabha’s mean diachronous self-citation rate was 1.98. The highest citation rate 28.4 was to the domain ‘Quantum electrodynamics. His single authored publications have received the highest number 863 (71.26%) of citations. Bhabha’s five publications have been cited more than 100 times each. His publications have been cited by the authors working in various diverse fields like nuclear physics, mathematical physics, instrumentation, optics, geophysics and geochemistry, condensed matter physics, applied physics, electrical and electronic engineering, mechanical engineering etc., indicating a very diverse influence and impact of Bhabha’s publications. Bhabha’s publications have also been cited by the Nobel laureates like V. L. Ginzberg, Wolfgang Pauli, H. A. Bethe, M. Born, W. Bothe, E. P. Wigner, H. Yukawa, P. M. S. Blackett and C. N. Yang which is an indication of his originality of ideas and high quality of publications

    Prevalence of visual impairment and severity of diabetic retinopathy in various ethnic groups in the UK

    Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is a leading cause of visual impairment (VI) in the working population. Minor ethnic groups are at increased risk of diabetes. Diabetic Retinopathy In Various Ethnic groups in the United Kingdom (DRIVE UK) is a cross-sectional study to estimate the prevalence of DR, VI and associated risk factors for sight threatening diabetic retinopathy (STDR) in Afro-Caribbeans (AC) and South Asians (SA) compared to Caucasians. People with diabetes in two regions in the United Kingdom who were screened and/or treated for DR from September 2008 to September 2009 were included in this study. VI and severe visual impairment (SVI) were defined as Snellen visual acuity of ≤ 6/18 and ≤ 6/60 respectively. DR was graded according to National Screening Committee (NSC) for diabetes guidelines UK. There were 57,144 people on the diabetic register, of which retinopathy data was available from 50,285 (88.1%) subjects (type 1 n=3,323, type 2 n=46,962). In type 1 and type 2 diabetes, any DR was detected in 53.1%, 39.5%, diabetic maculopathy in 13.1%, 8.4% and STDR in 9.91%, 4.0% of people respectively. STDR was significantly more prevalent in the SA (10.3%) and AC (11.5%) populations compared to Caucasians (5.5%). Overall VI was significantly higher in the ethnic minority population. A total of 7.5% (95% CI 7.3, 7.8) people with diabetes were not eligible for driving based on their visual acuity, 3.4% (95% CI 3.2, 3.5) were classified as VI and 0.4% (95% CI 0.33, 0.44) as SVI. Risk factors for STDR were found to include longer duration of diabetes and higher mean HbA1c. This study provides information that could be used to help develop future service frameworks and guidelines for local health bodies responsible for delivery of end userservices. The study also supports the need to explore the role of inflammatory, genetic and epigenetic factors as markers for ethnic differences in DR and potential treatment avenues for diabetic retinopathy

Therefore it is suggested that ‘Scientometric Portrait’ is the appropriate phrase for the studies on scientists and ‘Informetric Portrait’ for the studies pertaining to researchers in other disciplines such as arts, humanities, and social sciences

    Computational Optimization of Adaptive Hybrid Darrieus Turbine: Part 1

    Darrieus-type Vertical Axis Wind Turbines (VAWT) are promising for small scale decentralized power generation because of their unique advantages such as simple design, insensitive to wind direction, reliability, and ease of maintenance. Despite these positive aspects, poor self-starting capability and low efficiency in weak and unsteady winds deteriorate further development. Adaptive Hybrid Darrieus Turbine (AHDT) was proposed by the author in the past study as a potential solution to enhance low wind speed characteristics. The objective of the current research is to optimize the parameters of AHDT. AHDT integrates a dynamically varying Savonius rotor with a Darrieus rotor. A fully detailed 2D numerical study employing Reynold-Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) is carried out to investigate the impact of the Darrieus rotor diameter (DR) on the Savonius rotor (DT) with regard to hybrid turbine performance. The power coefficient of the Darrieus rotor is evaluated when the Savonius rotor is in the closed condition (cylinder) of various diameters. The influence of Reynolds number (Re) on the torque coefficient is examined. Power loss of 58.3% and 25% is reported for DR/DT ratio of 1.5 and 2 respectively for AHDT with solidity 0.5 at 9 m/s. The flow interaction between the Savonius rotor in closed configuration reveals the formation of von Karman vortices that interact with Darrieus blades resulting in flow detachment. An optimum diametrical ratio (DR/DT) of 3 is found to yield the maximum power coefficient of the Darrieus rotor

    This paper attempts to analyse the publication productivity of Anthony J. Leggett, the 2003 Nobel Prize winner in physics. His contributions peaked in 1987, 1994, and 1998 with 10 papers each. He had 194 publications during 1964 - 2004 in domains like Superfluid 3He (65), Foundations of Quantum Mechanics (36), Dissipative Quantum Systems (24), Atomic Alkali Gases (18), and Miscellaneous (51)which were analysed for authorship pattern with his 70 collaborators. Most active collaborators with Anthony J Leggett were: A. Garg with six papers and A. O. MCaldeira, D. M. Ginsberg, D. J. Vanharlingen , F. Sols, S.Takagi and D. A. Wollman with five papers each. His productivity coefficient was 0.60 which clearly indicates that his productivity increased after 50 percentile age. The highest degree of collaboration (1) for Anthony J. Leggett was found during 1964, 1971 and 1983. Journals have been the most preferred channel of communication, where as many as 139 papers out of 194 have been published. The core journals publishing his papers were: Phys. Rev. Leu. (42), Phys. Rev. B (9), J. Low Temp. Phys. (8),Phys. Rev. A (7), Ann. Phys. (6), Foundations of physics (6), J. Phys.(5), Prog.     Highlights of Library Automation related documents in the INSPEC

    The paper has attempted to analyse the Library Automation related records in the INSPEC (1969 to July 2004). The growth of Library Automation related literature, country of input, scattering of literature in different publication types, core journals publishing Library Automation related publications, language-wise proportion of the literature, content analysis through keywords/descriptors, availability of URLs (Universal Resource Locator) for full text articles as alternative locations were the main focus of the study. After the year 1984, the literature grows approximately linearly with a growth rate of about 600 items per year. The USA is the predominant publishing country of Library Automation related literature. Journals are the most preferred publication media, followed by Conference/Proceedings-Papers, Book-Chapters, and Reports publications. Most productive journals are: Library Hi Tech, followed by Computers in Libraries, VINE, Information Technology and Libraries, and Program. English articles constitute 91.83% of the total literature. That means the non-English articles constitute only 8.17%. The keyword analysis indicates that the key areas of Library Automation were cataloguing; academic-libraries; information-retrieval; Internet; and information-services. The most occurred URL was http://www.dlib.org/ as alternative locations in the availability notes of Library Automation related records
