Letter from Karl I. Zimmerman and T.R. Martinez to Toshiko Chuman

    No full text
A letter to Toshiko Chuman (nee Nakamura) from Karl I. Zimmerman, District Director of Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) in Philadelphia, and T.R. Martinez, Acting Chief, Detention, Deportation and Parole Section. The letter regards his release from INS into the custody of her attorney, Wayne M. Collins. The Chuman (Hayao "Sam" and Toshiko) Papers documents the World War II experiences of Hayao "Sam" and Toshiko Chuman, who were Kibei Nisei born in the United States but grew up and completed school in Japan, and then returned to the U.S. prior to the war. It chronicles the Chuman's incarceration from the Santa Anita Assembly Center, through Jerome, Rohwer, Tule Lake camps, and the Santa Fe and Crystal City internment camps as well as their struggle for restoring their U.S. citizenships in the 1960s. The digital collection consists of mostly textual material, including correspondence, affidavits, incarceration camp records, lease agreements, financial documents, receipts, pamphlets, and booklets

Fans of U.S. health care reform point out that many other countries provide coverage for all their citizens, and no one files for bankruptcy due to medical bills. But how exactly do these countries do it? January Series guest & journalist T.R. Reid, author of The Healing of America: A Global Quest for Better, Cheaper, and Fairer Health Care, tells of his travels comparing systems around the world. Shirley Hoogstra hosts. Episode #1011

Postpartum depressive symptoms: the B-vitamin link

    No full text
Objective This study examined longitudinal relationships between maternal red-cell folate status and dietary intakes of vitamins B(6), B(12) and folate before and during pregnancy and subsequent postpartum depressive symptoms.Study design and setting Within a cohort study of women aged 20-34 years (the Southampton Women's Survey) dietary data were obtained before pregnancy and at 11 and 34 weeks' gestation. Red-cell folate was measured before pregnancy and at 11 weeks' gestation. We derived relative risks of postpartum depressive symptoms using an Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) score of ? 13 administered from 6 months to 1 year postpartum. Results No significant differences were found between those with postpartum depressive symptoms (n = 905) and those without (n = 1951) in relation to red-cell folate concentration or dietary intake of folate, vitamin B(12) and vitamin B(6), before or during pregnancy. A prior history of mental illness (relative risk (RR) 1.83; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.53-2.19) was associated with postpartum depressive symptoms, and women who breastfed until 6 months were less likely to experience postpartum depressive symptoms (RR 0.68; 95% CI 0.55-0.84).Conclusion This study suggests that folate status and dietary folate, B(6) and B(12) intakes before and during pregnancy are not associated with postpartum depressive symptoms. A history of mental illness, however, was a strong risk factor

Gender dynamics in data collection on reproductive health: field experiences in Kerala, India

    No full text
Reproductive health researchers tend to choose interviewers of the same sex as those interviewed. In many societies, it is considered unacceptable for men to interview women on topics of an intensely personal nature like sexuality or contraceptive use. In this paper, the author analyzes 21 interviews and 16 focus group discussions (FGDs) undertaken during a field study on the Quality of Services in the Indian Family Welfare Programs conducted in Kerala. The analysis was based on the model which identifies the principal participants in the interview as the respondent and the interviewer. In all these cases the contradiction between the gendered roles of the interviewer and interviewee are visible. However, if viewed in the context of the model provided by Briggs, it is clear that these contradictions are due to the differences in the social roles that the interviewers assumed and that the respondents ascribed to them and in the interactional goals of the interviewers and the respondents. Contradictions were also experienced during the FGDs. Educational sessions on contraception are a good tool for gathering sensitive information instead of the conventional interview, where the gendered roles are so crucial to the information gathering exercise itself

Optical and X-ray correlations during the 2015 outburst of the black hole V404 Cyg

We present a serendipitous multiwavelength campaign of optical photometry simultaneous with Integral X-ray monitoring of the 2015 outburst of the black hole V404 Cyg. Large-amplitude optical variability is generally correlated with X-rays, with lags of order a minute or less compatible with binary light travel time-scales or jet ejections. Rapid optical flaring on time-scales of seconds or less is incompatible with binary light-travel time-scales and has instead been associated with synchrotron emission from a jet. Both this rapid jet response and the lagged and smeared one can be present simultaneously. The optical brightness is not uniquely determined by the X-ray brightness, but the X-ray/optical relationship is bounded by a lower envelope such that at any given optical brightness there is a maximum X-ray brightness seen. This lower envelope traces out a Fopt∝F0.54X relation that can be approximately extrapolated back to quiescence. Rapid optical variability is only seen near this envelope, and these periods correspond to the hardest hard X-ray colours. This correlation between hard X-ray colour and optical variability (and anticorrelation with optical brightness) is a novel finding of this campaign, and apparently a facet of the outburst behaviour in V404 Cyg. It is likely that these correlations are driven by changes in the central accretion rate and geometry

You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Applied Mechanic
