    No full text
This paper focuses on company-based welfare in small and mediumsized enterprises. After providing a definition of the phenomenon, the authors briefly discuss the reasons behind the expansion of these practices, and illustrate some local experiences generated by local-level agreements among small and medium-sized enterprises. Such arrangements, which have not yet been studied in depth, display a different governance system than the one present in large companies. The authors test the hypothesis under which these localized experiences can contribute to the generation of collective goods oriented to the development of local welfare. The research questions that drive this contribution are therefore the following: which forms of regulation favour the provision of welfare benefits in small and medium enterprises through local-level agreements? Can these services be considered as local collective goods that both businesses and citizens can benefit from? If compared to what large companies are able to achieve through welfare in terms of increased social cohesion and local development, can company-based welfare in SMEs stemming from multi-stakeholder agreements lead to better results

A New Control-Oriented Semi-Empirical Approach to Predict Engine-Out NOx Emissions in a Euro VI 3.0 L Diesel Engine

    No full text
The present study is focused on the development of a new control-oriented semi-empirical model to predict nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions in a light-duty diesel engine under both steady-state and transient conditions. The model is based on the estimation of the deviations of NOx emissions, with respect to the nominal engine-calibration map values, as a function of the deviations of the intake oxygen concentration and of the combustion phasing. The model also takes into account the effects of engine speed, total injected quantity, and ambient temperature and humidity. The approach has been developed and assessed on an Fiat Powertrain Technologies (FPT) Euro VI 3.0 L diesel engine for light-duty applications, in the frame of a research project in collaboration with FPT Industrial. The model has also been tested on a rapid prototyping device, and it was shown that it requires a very short computational time, thus being suitable for implementation on the Engine Control Unit (ECU) for real-time NOx control tasks

ustainable, inclusive and resilient cities and urban settlements are fundamental in enabling people to live long and healthy lives. Elderly population is growing all over the world and in Italy is among the largest. Within this scenario, epidemiological data show that Alzheimer disease, a dementia which manifest with ageing, is also forecast to rapidly increase, up to 150 million cases in 2050. Within urban settlements, the health and socio-sanitary structures for elderly patients represent a fundamental social infrastructure that collects important investments but must be suitable to host people with dementia. The paper describes the methodology adopted for the definition of an assessment tool able to evaluate the indoor and outdoor qualities and characteristics of socio-sanitary facilities for Alzheimer and elderly people. In the first phase the analysis of scientific literature, international case studies and sustainability assessment framework led to identification of 4 criteria, 19 indicators and 71 variables validated by experts in geriatry, psychiatry and architecture. In the second phase the tool has been operationalized and tested on a sample of three territorial structures in Lombardy Region, Italy. The outcomes of the evaluation can lead to the definition of sustainable project strategies

Development and assessment of a random-forest model for real-time prediction of diesel engine-out particulate matter emissions

The containment of air pollution resulting from transportation sector is worldwide considered as one of the most important targets to be still achieved. The emissions of particulate matter (PM) assume a relevant role when Diesel engine-based vehicles are concerned. In the present paper, an innovative model for the prediction of engine-out emitted PM mass has been developed and assessed on two different Diesel engines. A semi-empirical approach is defined as reference model and initially validated through the ISO/IEC Guide 98-3:2008 procedure and its potentials of the being coupled to a predictive combustion model are demonstrated. Then, relying on the findings of the semi-empirical approach, a Random Forest (RF) algorithm has been thoroughly analysed and selected as a promising solution for real-time testing with on-line computed variables. Furthermore, an automatic feature selection and calibration procedure of the algorithm hyper-parameters has been developed. Very interesting performances were recorded as the reference model prediction accuracies were reproduced and comparable results were obtained when only ECU-measured variables were considered. The presented Random Forest model can be intended to be part of a pollution-oriented real-time powertrain control strategy that could on accurate and repeatable PM estimations

Cross-sectional imaging after pancreatic surgery: The dialogue between the radiologist and the surgeon

    No full text
Pancreatic surgery is nowadays considered one of the most complex surgical approaches and not unscathed from complications. After the surgical procedure, cross-sectional imaging is considered the non-invasive reference standard to detect early and late compilations, and consequently to address patients to the best management possible. Contras-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) should be considered the most important and useful imaging technique to evaluate the surgical site. Thanks to its speed, contrast, and spatial resolution, it can help reach the final diagnosis with high accuracy. On the other hand, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) should be considered as a second-line imaging approach, especially for the evaluation of biliary findings and late complications. In both cases, the radiologist should be aware of protocols and what to look at, to create a robust dialogue with the surgeon and outline a fitted treatment for each patient
