The paper focuses on the cognitive possibilities of the gaze as a theme that brings Le Corbusier closer to the world of photography (and Guido Guidi to Le Corbusier). Le Corbusier's work didn’t receive the attention of a real photographic reading project before Guidi's photographic project. The image of his photographed work was identified by Lucien Hervé's photographs that had accompanied during its making. This contribution also illustrates how this Guidi's work has been originated by the volume Le Corbusier, Scritti edited by the author of this essay for Italian publisher Einaudi in 2003, and analyzes the path defined among the Le Corbusier buildings, focusing on particular on the Duval factory in Saint-Dié. In fact, Guidi has indelibly and definitively annotated (in the following years the building has been restored) its shades, gradations, and life through time

JOLIE: a Java Orchestration Language Interpreter Engine

AbstractService oriented computing is an emerging paradigm for programming distributed applications based on services. Services are simple software elements that supply their functionalities by exhibiting their interfaces and that can be invoked by exploiting simple communication primitives. The emerging mechanism exploited in service oriented computing for composing services –in order to provide more complex functionalities– is by means of orchestrators. An orchestrator is able to invoke and coordinate other services by exploiting typical workflow patterns such as parallel composition, sequencing and choices. Examples of orchestration languages are XLANG [IBM, “XLANG: Web Services for Business Process Design,” http://www.gotdotnet.com/team/xml_wsspecs/xlang-c/default.htm] and WS-BPEL [OASIS, “Web Services Business Process Execution Language Version 2.0, Working Draft,” http://www.oasis-open.org/committees/download.php/10347/wsbpel-specification-draft-120204.htm]. In this paper we present JOLIE, an interpreter and engine for orchestration programs. The main novelties of JOLIE are that it provides an easy to use development environment (because it supports a more programmer friendly C/Java-like syntax instead of an XML-based syntax) and it is based on a solid mathematical underlying model (developed in previous works of the authors [N. Design-The 157 823 individual records of the inhabitants of the town of Ferrara in Italy were automatically linked into 106 821 sibships. A 10% sample (10 842 sibships) was then extracted from the distribution of sibships and tabulated, for linkage to medical records. Patients-The biopsy records at the Institute of Pathological Anatomy of the University of Ferrara were manually linked to cancer records and then to sibships. It was possible to construct the distribution of 2062 biopsies and of 829 cancers in sibships. Results-From the distribution of biopsies and tumours in sibships, it was possible to estimate the incidence of tumours in the population (0.052) and in siblings of affected (0.083), and to apply to such distributions current methods for the estimate of heritability (h2 = 0.246) and of recurrence risks of tumours in sibships, age independent. Conclusions-The study shows that the procedure resulting in the estimation of incidences and recurrence risks for tumours could be completely automated, and extended to whole populations and homogeneous subgroups in post industrial cultures
