Spin susceptibility and electron-phonon coupling of two-dimensional materials by range-separated hybrid density functionals: Case study of LixZrNCl
We investigate the capability of density functional theory (DFT) to appropriately describe the spin susceptibility, chi(s), and the intervalley electron-phonon coupling in LixZrNCl. At low doping, LixZrNCl behaves as a two-dimensional two-valley electron gas, with parabolic bands. In such a system, chi(s) increases with decreasing doping because of the electron-electron interaction. We show that DFT with local functionals (LDA/GGA) is not capable of reproducing this behavior. The use of exact exchange in Hartree-Fock (HF) or in DFT hybrid functionals enhances chi(s). HF, B3LYP, and PBE0 approaches overestimate chi(s), whereas the range-separated HSE06 functional leads to results similar to those obtained in the random phase approximation (RPA) applied to a two-valley two-spin electron gas. Within HF, LixZrNCl is even unstable towards a ferromagnetic state for x < 0.16. The intervalley phonons induce an imbalance in the valley occupation that can be viewed as the effect of a pseudomagnetic field. Thus, similarly to what happens for chi(s), the electron-phonon coupling of intervalley phonons is enhanced by the electron-electron interaction. Only hybrid DFT functionals capture such an enhancement and the HSE06 functional reproduces the RPA results presented in M. Calandra et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 114, 077001 (2015)]. These results imply that the description of the susceptibility and electron-phonon coupling with a range-separated hybrid functional would be important also in other two-dimensional weakly doped semiconductors, such as transition-metal dichalcogenides and graphene
The role of Geomorphology on the Diversification and Distribution of the Landscape at the Natural Reserve of Torricchio Mountain (Central Apennine, Italy).
The field work and mapping studies carried out in the Natural Reserve of Torricchio mountain were aimed to elict the causal relationship between the vegetation and the complex of edaphic factors. By way of the studies it was possible to distinguish the following types of landscapes. 1 - landscape of summits and cryoplanation terraces ; 2 - landscapes of step slopes; 3 - landscape ofslopes with soil-creep processes, solifiuction lobes and benches; 4 - landscape of slopes with quick mass-movement; 5 - landscape of valleys filled by colluvial-alluvial deposits; 6 - landscape of valleys strongly incised. For each landscape unit the principal physical-chemical characteristics of soil and vegetation are discussed
Grammatical gender in the brain: Evidence from an fMRI study on Italian
The grammatical gender of a word is a lexical-syntactic property determining agreement among different sentence parts. Recent fMRI investigations identified the areas involved in the retrieval of grammatical gender near the left Broca ́s area providing further evidence to confirm the preeminent syntactic role of this area. However, these studies employed categorical designs based on the controversial methodology of the cognitive subtraction of neural activations related to different tasks. In the present study we identified the neural substrates of grammatical gender assignment using an fMRI parametric study. Participants decided the grammatical gender of visually presented Italian words whose gender-to-ending regularity varied. The results showed activation in left and right fronto-temporal areas suggesting an interplay of both hemispheres in the processing of grammatical gender
Kernels over Sets of Finite Sets using RKHS Embeddings, with Application to Bayesian (Combinatorial) Optimization
We focus on kernel methods for set-valued inputs and their application to Bayesian set optimization, notably combinatorial optimization. We investigate two classes of set kernels that both rely on Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Space embeddings, namely the "Double Sum" (DS) kernels recently considered in Bayesian set optimization, and a class introduced here called "Deep Embedding" (DE) kernels that essentially consists in applying a radial kernel on Hilbert space on top of the canonical distance induced by another kernel such as a DS kernel. We establish in particular that while DS kernels typically suffer from a lack of strict positive definiteness, vast subclasses of DE kernels built upon DS kernels do possess this property, enabling in turn combinatorial optimization without requiring to introduce a jitter parameter. Proofs of theoretical results about considered kernels are complemented by a few practicalities regarding hyperparameter fitting. We furthermore demonstrate the applicability of our approach in prediction and optimization tasks, relying both on toy examples and on two test cases from mechanical engineering and hydrogeology, respectively. Experimental results highlight the applicability and compared merits of the considered approaches while opening new perspectives in prediction and sequential design with set inputs
Artificial Reality: Immersive but Factually Dishonest AR Experience
As commonly known, technology is a double-edged sword, and augmented reality (AR) is no exception. This article raises concerns and promotes awareness of the use of AR in mass media, in particular in those industries, such as news reporting, that aspire to report facts. Our main message is that the standard workflow for creating AR content, albeit having no mala fide intent, might lead to artificial reality. This titular term was introduced by the first author during a talk organized by a technical committee of IEEE Consumer Technology Society (CTSoc), where we decided that we should urge more ethics and standard discussions on the issue through this article
