Formation of 8-RS-BODIPYs via direct Substitution of 8-MeS-BODIPY by RSH; R = Et, Pr, Bu, tBu, n-C12H25, C6H5, p-MeC6H4, p-MeOC6H4, and 2,6-Me2C6H3
Reactions between 8-RS-BODIPY (R = Me, 1) and alkyl and aryl thiols were readily accomplished in dichloromethane (DCM) to provide a synthetic pathway to a range of new 8-organothio-BODIPYs in good yield. The new alkyl 8-RS-BODIPYs, R = Et, 2; Pr, 3; Bu, 4; tBu, 5, n-Dodecyl, 6; exhibit absorption and emission properties essentially unchanged from those of 1 whereas the arylthio analogs, R = Ph, 7; 2,6-Me2C6H3, 8; p-MeC6H4, 9; p-MeOC6H4, 10, exhibit no fluorescence with the exception of 7, and then only in hexane. In common with other related 8-substituted BODIPYs the new 8-alkylthio-BODIPY dyes show decreasing fluorescence intensity as solvent polarity increases. Compounds 2, 3, 7, and 8 were characterized via single crystal X-ray analysis; the alkyl derivatives 2 and 3 exhibited planar BODIPY cores with co-planar organothio- substituents, whereas the aryl derivatives exhibited both BODIPY core deformation and significant twisting about the S-C(8) bond removing co-planarity between the aryl group and the distorted BODIPY core. These deformations coincide with the significantly reduced emission properties. The accepted manuscript in pdf format is listed with the files at the bottom of this page. OBJECTIVE: Liquid-based cytology (LBC) has been used for non gynaecological specimens since its introduction into routine use in cervical cytology in the mid-1990s. There are still relatively few large studies comparing performance in reporting the head and neck fine-needle aspirations (H&N FNA) processed by LBC only to conventional direct smears (CDS). METHODS: This study compared 686 H&N FNAs processed by LBC only with 3719 CDS. All were taken under ultrasound (US) guidance by a small cohort of three consultant radiologists and reported by the author. RESULTS: The (smaller) LBC sample was statistically representative of the larger CDS population at an alpha level of 0.05. There was no difference between CDS and LBC at a 95% confidence interval (CI) when comparing specificity and sensitivity (specificity: 94.8-96.5% versus 90.2-95.4%; sensitivity: 91.4-94.1% versus 86.8-93.4%). The inadequate rate between the two techniques was similar, 0.5-1.0% for CDS versus 0.7-2.5% for LBC. The significance difference was in the suspicious rate which was greater at 2.8-5.8% for LBC versus 1.7-2.6% for CDS. Consequently, there was a slight but non-significant difference between the two populations with respect to the overall accuracy: 93.5-95.1% for CDS versus 89.4-93.7% for LBC. CONCLUSIONS: While there are morphological differences between LBC and CDS in H&N FNAs, once a degree of familiarity is achieved, the two techniques have equivalent sensitivity, specificity and inadequate rates
MONOPOLISTIC COMPETITION AND PROFIT MAXIMIZATION : Final paper
S pojmom monopolističke konkurencije svijet se prvi puta upoznao 1930. godine, kada su do
tada nepoznati pojam definirali američki ekonomist Edward Chamberlain i engleski ekonomist
Joan Robinson.
monopola i njegova definicija.
način i kako monopolisti određuju cijene vlastitih proizvoda.Term monopolistic competition is first mentioned in 1930., when American and English
economists Edward Chamberlain and Joan Robinson first defined that, until then, unknown
term. What characterized that term was wide spectre of goods and services that were offered to
customers.
Monopolistic competition classifies itself in the category of imperfect competition. What make
sit imperfect is the marker structure which depends on competition and breaching on the market.
This paper will focus on monopolistic competition and its market structure. In purpose of
explaining the information about monopolistic competition, the author will first define the term
monopoly. In order of proving that monopolistic competition is the closest to perfect
competition, the author will define the differences of monopoly, monopolistic competition and
perfect competition. Closer look into perfect competition will be provided by characteristics of
monopolistic competition. The market that is characterized as monopolistic competition
requires constant advertising and creation of brands to maximize the demand of such products.
Today, advertising is the key to promotion and creating loyal customer base. Therefore,
monopolists are making great efforts in that segment of their business
From the finite to the infinite: Death and altered perspective in Russian literature
"This dissertation concerns a tradition in Russian literature in which there occurs at the moment of death of the hero a change in perspective. This altered perspective in general is from a very narrow, finite vision to a broader, often times infinite vision in which an idea of the author's Weltanschauung is apparent. This change in perspective can occur in one of five ""agents"" of the story: the character that dies, other characters in the story, the narrator, the author and the reader. This tradition will be analyzed by looking at examples from all periods of Russian literature. Beginning with medieval Russian literature, the tradition is traced from its genesis through its development up to the late twentieth century. Sample works are analyzed in detail both textually and contextually and together provide insight into the progression of the tradition.""Both extremely famous works, like Gogol's ""The Overcoat"" and Tolstoj's The Death of Ivan Il'ic, and minor works, such as Remizov's ""Zanofa"" and Garsin's ""Night"", are analyzed to show the tradition in both great and minor literature. Genres represented include the novel, the povest', the short story, drama and poetry showing the tradition to cross genre lines. The work concludes with a discussion of the nature of death in Russian literature, time in the tradition and avenues for further research."Made available in DSpace on 2011-05-07T13:15:12Z (GMT). Eggshell appearance does not signal maternal corticosterone exposure in Japanese quail: an experimental study with brown-spotted eggs
Reproduction is a critical period for birds as they have to cope with many stressful events. One consequence of an acute exposure to stress is the release of corticosterone, the avian stress hormone. Prolonged stress can have negative impacts on the immune system, resulting in, for example, increased oxidative stress. Through maternal effects, females are known to modulate their investment in eggs content according to their own physiological condition. Less is known about maternal investment in eggshells, especially in pigments. The two main eggshell pigments may possess opposite antioxidant properties: protoporphyrin (brown) is a pro-oxidant, whereas biliverdin (blue-green) is an antioxidant. In Japanese quail, we know that the deposition of both pigments is related to female body condition. Thus, a chronic stress response may be reflected in eggshell coloration. Using female Japanese quails that lay brown-spotted eggs, we explored whether physiological exposure to corticosterone induces a change in female basal stress and antioxidant factors, and eggshell pigment concentration, spectrophotometric reflectance, and maculation coverage. We supplemented adult females over a 2 week period with either peanut oil (control) or corticosterone (treatment). We collected pre- and post-supplementation eggs and analysed the effect of corticosterone treatment on female physiology and eggshell appearance parameters. Except for corticosterone-fed birds which laid eggs with brighter spots, supplementation had no significant effect on female physiology or eggshell pigment concentration, reflectance and maculation. The change in eggshell spot brightness was not detected by a photoreceptor noise-limited color opponent model of avian visual perception. Our data confirms that eggshell reflectance in spotted eggs varies over the laying sequence, and spot reflectance may be a key factor that is affected by females CORT exposure, even if the changes are not detected by an avian visual model.Camille Duval, Phillip Cassey, Paul G. Histopathological evidence for macrophage activation driving post-transfusion hyperhaemolysis syndrome.
Author(s) Pre or Post Print Version Only. No PDFPost-transfusion hyperhaemolysis syndrome (PTHS) is a rare life-threatening transfusion complication reported mainly in sickle cell patients. Its pathogenesis is poorly understood. Antibody-mediated haemolysis and bystander effect have been proposed as putative mechanisms, but in half of cases, red cell antibodies are undetectable, and PTHS develops despite transfusion of cross-matched compatible RBC. An alternate hypothesis proposes activated macrophages as the main drivers of red cell destruction through direct phagocytosis. We report the histopathological findings of two patients with PTHS showing extensive macrophage expansion and erythrophagocytosis, supportive of macrophage activation driving PTHS. This supports a possible role for novel therapies that target macrophage activation.Pre.

Brendiranje hrvatskog vina
Autorica enciklopedije s najvišom enološkom titulom (Master of Wine) Jancis Robinson u suradnji s profesorima Agromonskom fakulteta (prof. dr.sc Ivanom Pejićem i prof.dr.sc Edom Maletićem) potvrdila je kako je DNK naše sorte - identična poznatoj kalifornijskoj sorti zinfandel i talijanskoj primitivio.
