    Floating texts and accessible captions: The creative turn in audiovisual genres

    In accordance with Jakobson’s tripartite classification of translation as “rewording”, “translation proper” and “transmutation”, audiovisual (translation) practices can be understood as sites of creativity that, by virtue of the complementarity of the multiple oral and visual layers, contribute to strengthening the social and cultural dimensions of marked artifacts. In line with this belief, this study investigates the shape and role of (sub)titles (i.e., integrated titles, pop-ups, captions, and subtitles) within the same language and when translating across languages. To this end, a selected heterogeneous corpus of text bites encapsulated in small windows on screen within documentaries and accessible stage in English has been compiled. Different perspectives have been adopted in relation to the practice of creativity in translational and non-strictly translation settings (e.g., authorial contexts), where creativity has been considered to be a constitutional component and a vital resource for transcreation.The scrutiny of the various (sub)titling activities, as instantiated in the selected corpus, serves to interrogate the potential of audiovisual (translation) modes as harbingers of creativity, as well as to foreground the role of these innovative practices in the fostering of greater accessibility of audiovisual productions for different types of audience and for domesticating purposes. Final thoughts will aim to articulate the concept of creativity within translation and non-strictly translation frameworks (i.e., (sub)titling), highlighting its value as an aesthetic and artistic instrument that can reinforce and improve practices of localisation and accessibility. These practices will encourage forms of activism as participation and solidarity, as well as unconventional communicative ways of transferring content in the form of (sub)titles as integrated texts that offer novel aesthetic and narrative modes of interpretation

    The Role of the Creative Industries: Translating Identities on Stages and Visuals

    Drawing on research on narrative theory (Baker, 2006, 2014) in translation and interpretation studies, on the interdisciplinary relationship between translation studies and the visual and performing arts, and on the principal diversities between media discourse representations and aesthetic constructions on the topic of the migration crisis, this study addresses the issue of transferring cultural difference and language diversity within public and digital spaces through the telling and visualization of authentic stories belonging to migrant people, which contribute to the reversal of anti-refugee media discourses. Against the lens of a political reframing of migrant communities in the arts, translation, in collaboration with the aesthetics of migration, is scrutinised from a non-mainstream perspective that involves acts of interventionism and resistance, collaboration and solidarity, adaptation and performance.     This study investigates the modalities by means of which the visual arts have recently been transformed by migration, and how aesthetic transformations within the context of (sub)titling have contributed to re-shaping identities and minority groups in filmic genres. The growing interest in migratory aesthetics has brought into representation marginalised subjectivities (i.e. the lives of Italians forced to emigrate from Libya after the Gadhafi coup d’état as the case in point in this work) in ways that depart from migrant depictions in the conventional media (e.g. the news bulletins). Against the backdrop of translation as a form of re-narration and an instrument of accessibility, and drawing on Systemic Functional Linguistics as a method of survey, this study examines the (sub)titling activity in English lingua franca in what may be referred to as “accented cinema”, namely the documentary film My Home, in Libya (2018) directed by Italian filmmaker Martina Melilli. Creativity and experimentation are central to this work of art, also thanks to the use of (sub)titling procedures employed as aesthetic and linguistic devices that go beyond translation proper while covering the filmic narrative areas in terms of authorial titling and diegetic interventions. Against the normative background of subtitles in English lingua franca, (sub)titling is perceived as a practice that encourages the mediation of migrant and marginalised stories, and as a space of re-narration where screen textualities like pieces of (sub)titles give voice to characters’ inaudible thoughts

    With the objective of scrutinising general standards, specific criteria and levels of creativity applied to translation practices, especially in light of recent research in audiovisual consumption and reception, creativity and transcreation, and arts accessibility and translation for the arts, the special issue seeks to contextualise the numerous shifts within the artisitc sector in relation to the theoretical and practical challenges that our increasingly technological culture poses for the modes of translation and accessibility. Contributors shed light upon a variety of cultural areas where translation, often combined with creativity, intervenes to localise aesthetic products under the network of transmediality.
