Dynamic Aeroelastic Simulations of the Pazy Wing by UVLM with Nonlinear Viscous Corrections

    No full text
The Pazy Wing test case is a benchmark for the investigation of aeroelastic effects at very large deflections. Tip deformations in the order of 50 % span were measured in wind tunnel tests which renders this model highly attractive for the validation of numerical aeroelastic methods and tools for geometrically nonlinear, large deflection analyses. Various wind tunnel tests close to regions of aeroelastic instability were performed recently by Technion, and limit cycle oscillations (LCOs) were observed at some of the test points. These LCOs are the result of structural and aerodynamic nonlinearities, especially flow separation. The simulation of such a complex and highly nonlinear phenomenon is the goal of our current activities within the Large Deflection Working Group of the 3rd Aeroelastic Prediction Workshop (AePW3). To restrict the modeling efforts and the computational complexity, the aerodynamic method (a potential-theory based UVLM) is extended to account for particular viscous effects, mainly flow separation. Therefore, the effective lift coefficient of each stripe of the vortex lattice grid is determined and the circulations of the panels of the stripe are modified once a maximum value is exceeded. The proposed method neglects dynamic effects but effectively limits the oscillation amplitude as is demonstrated by nonlinear time domain simulations in the unstable regime

Kunst mit Botschaft: Der Gold-Seide-Stoff für den Ilchan Abū Saʽīd von Iran (Grabgewand Rudolfs IV. in Wien) – Rekonstruktion, Typus, Repräsentationsmedium

A unique cloth of silk and gold with Arabic inscriptions praising the Ilkhan Abū Saʽīd “Būsaʽīd”), Mongol ruler of Iran (1316-35), survives in three pieces used for the burial garment of Rudolph IV at Vienna (d. 1365). Presenting some of the findings from a new study of this textile, this article reconstructs the original cloth, draws attention to a specific type of striped design and discusses its context of use. In the reconstructed cloth, bold inscriptions in broad golden letters, alternating with a delicate repeat pattern, ran lengthwise from both short sides in opposite reading directions. Meeting at some point in the cloth, they divided it into two parts, raising questions about its use. While striped designs are well-known, this monumental type with large inscriptions may have been a new form, relating to Iranian textile traditions and ṭirāz inscriptions in Islamic art; contemporaneous Chinese art seems to have had no particular bearing on the motifs. In the cloth as a medium of representation, monumental inscriptions and gold may have visually communicated an identity, both Islamic and Mongol, of the Ilkhanid ruler

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
