Familiarity and environmental representations of a city: a self-report study.
"Sense of direction" is usually assessed by self-report. Several internal factors contribute to proficiency in navigation: spatial cognitive style, respondent's sex, and familiarity with the environment; however, questionnaires assessing sense of direction do not include all these factors. In a recent study, Nori and Piccardi reported that environmental familiarity was crucial for topographical orientation. Regardless of a person's spatial cognitive style (i.e., landmark, route, or survey), the greater their familiarity with the environment, the better their performance. In this study, a questionnaire was used, the Familiarity and Spatial Cognitive Style Scale, to measure 208 women's sense of direction and knowledge of their city of residence. Analysis showed that Spatial Cognitive Style predicted sense of direction but not town knowledge. By contrast, familiarity played a crucial role in both areas, confirming the importance of having a tool to assess this factor
Different topological properties of EEG-derived networks describe working memory phases as revealed by graph theoretical analysis
Several non-invasive imaging methods have contributed to shed light on the brain mechanisms underlying working memory (WM). The aim of the present study was to depict the topology of the relevant EEG-derived brain networks associated to distinct operations of WM function elicited by the Sternberg Item Recognition Task (SIRT) such as encoding, storage, and retrieval in healthy, middle age (46 ± 5 years) adults. High density EEG recordings were performed in 17 participants whilst attending a visual SIRT. Neural correlates of WM were assessed by means of a combination of EEG signal processing methods (i.e., time-varying connectivity estimation and graph theory), in order to extract synthetic descriptors of the complex networks underlying the encoding, storage, and retrieval phases of WM construct. The group analysis revealed that the encoding phase exhibited a significantly higher small-world topology of EEG networks with respect to storage and retrieval in all EEG frequency oscillations, thus indicating that during the encoding of items the global network organization could “optimally” promote the information flow between WM sub-networks. We also found that the magnitude of such configuration could predict subject behavioral performance when memory load increases as indicated by the negative correlation between Reaction Time and the local efficiency values estimated during the encoding in the alpha band in both 4 and 6 digits conditions. At the local scale, the values of the degree index which measures the degree of in- and out- information flow between scalp areas were found to specifically distinguish the hubs within the relevant sub-networks associated to each of the three different WM phases, according to the different role of the sub-network of regions in the different WM phases. Our findings indicate that the use of EEG-derived connectivity measures and their related topological indices might offer a reliable and yet affordable approach to monitor WM components and thus theoretically support the clinical assessment of cognitive functions in presence of WM decline/impairment, as it occurs after stroke. © 2018 Toppi, Astolfi, Risetti, Anzolin, Kober, Wood and Mattia

Perspective changing in primary and secondary learning: A gender difference study
In the present study, we investigated the ability of 106 (55 males, 51 females) college students to recall an 8-step path from different viewpoints (0°; 90°; 180° and 270°) after primary and secondary learning without a time limit. For each participant, we computed the time and number of repetitions necessary to learn the path as well as his/her spatial style (landmark, route and survey) using the "Questionnaire on Spatial Representation" (Pazzaglia & De Beni, 2001). We found gender differences in secondary but not in primary learning. Our results support the hypothesis that gender differences emerge only in adverse learning conditions requiring strong spatial ability. Moreover, we observed that computing an individual learning time as well as the specific number of repetitions necessary to learn the environment reduced markedly the presence of individual differences, stressing the importance of the expertise effect in the environmental learning
Management of non-specific thoracic spine pain: a cross-sectional study among physiotherapists
Abstract Background The thoracic area has mainly been neglected in research compared to the lumbar and cervical regions. No clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) for non-specific thoracic spine pain (TSP) have been compiled. Therefore, it can be argued that the absence of specific CPGs raises questions about the management of non-specific TSP. Hence, this study aimed at determining the management of non-specific TSP among physiotherapists in Italy. Methods A web cross-sectional survey investigating physiotherapists’ management of non-specific TSP was conducted. The survey instrument was divided into three sections. The first section obtained participants’ characteristics. The second section determined participants’ agreement with 29 statements regarding the clinical management of non-specific TSP utilising a five-point Likert scale. Participants who partially or completely agreed (scores 4–5) were considered to agree with the statements. A ≥ 70% of agreement with a statement was considered as consensus according to previous literature. The third section asked the participants to indicate how often they adopted several treatments to manage non-specific TSP with a 5-point scale (always – often – sometimes – rarely - never). The frequencies of answers were calculated, and a visual representation through a bar chart was reported. The online version of the survey instrument was delivered through the newsletter of the Italian Association of Physiotherapists and the postgraduate master’s degree in Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation of the University of Genova (Genova, Italy). Results In total, 424 physiotherapists (mean age (SD): 35.1 years (10.5); 50% women) completed the survey. In the second section, physiotherapists achieved consensus for 22/29 statements. Those statements addressed the importance of psychosocial factors, exercise, education, and manual therapy techniques in managing non-specific TSP. In the third section, 79.7% of participants indicated they would always adopt a multimodal treatment (education, therapeutic exercise, manual therapy), followed by education and information (72.9%), therapeutic exercise (62.0%), soft tissue manual therapy (27.1%), and manual therapy (16.5%). Conclusions Study participants considered fundamentally using a multimodal programme based on education, exercise and manual therapy to manage non-specific TSP. This approach aligns with the CPGs for other chronic musculoskeletal pain than non-specific TSP
Logiikan ja näyttöpaneelin ohjelmointiin käytettiin Siemens:in TIA Portal ohjelmaa.
This thesis was commissioned by Risetti Oy Ltd in spring 2019. The aim of the thesis was to modernize the control circuit and regain the operational functionality of the machine. The machine has been out of use and used only to donor parts for another similar operational machine. Near past was situation that the control board broke and only thing to remedy the situation was to switch the control board from old machine to newer one. This left the conclusion if the control board breaks again the machine is useless. In that situation there is no quick way to regain an operational state of the machine because there are no spare parts available to it anymore or anywhere.
Sensors, actuators and devices that the machine needed were left in place if they were in good operational condition. All the old harnesses, wiring and devices were dismantled if they were not needed. There were some questionable wirings, which is quite common for a machine of this age.
Now when the machine is complete almost all the wirings are new, because the usage of Siemens S7 logic module and HMI screen. The new control circuit and wirings are clearer and comply with the current industrial standard. This means that the control circuit feed is now the 24V DC everywhere, instead of the earlier variable feeds DC or AC with different voltage ratings. 24V DC is the most common feed in industrial application nowadays.
Siemens TIA Portal software was used to program the Siemens logic module and the HMI-screen. The ladder diagram language was used for programming. Because it was already a familiar practice to the programmer and was assumed to be the easiest to understand to the reader without a programming background.
The objectives of the thesis were reached at an acceptable level. The machine is operational and easier to operate, because now the user can easily adjust the parameters for the current need
