    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Bruton tyrosine kinase inhibition limits multiple sclerosis disease-driving inflammation while promoting regulatory B cells

    BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In multiple sclerosis (MS), a variety of immunosuppressive treatments are available. While effective, these approaches often lead to sustained impairment of essential components of the immune system, posing long-term safety concerns. Consequently, there is a growing interest in alternative therapeutic approaches that selectively limit pathogenic B-cell functions while preserving their physiologic roles. In this study, we investigated the therapeutic potential of inhibiting the enzyme Bruton tyrosine kinase (BTK), a key signaling molecule in both B-cell and myeloid cell activation. METHODS: The effects of the BTK inhibitor evobrutinib were evaluated in various experimental in vivo models of CNS demyelination, each representing different aspects of disease pathology as well as a naïve healthy condition. The impact on disease onset and severity was determined, and phenotypical alterations in different cell populations were assessed via flow cytometry. Furthermore, functional changes in both murine and human myeloid cells induced by BTK inhibition under specific Fc receptor–dependent stimulation were analyzed in in vitro settings using flow cytometry. RESULTS: In a naïve, healthy environment, evobrutinib promoted the development of regulatory B-cell properties. In various experimental models of CNS demyelination, BTK inhibition limited the differentiation of proinflammatory B cells while supporting their regulatory properties. Beyond modulating B-cell responses, BTK inhibition also attenuated the activation of myeloid cells after Fc receptor–mediated antigen uptake, a process assumed to be of importance in conditions, such as neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder and myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein–antibody associated disease. In addition, BTK inhibition was shown to suppress the secretion of proinflammatory cytokines and reduce antigen presentation, further dampening pathogenic immune responses. DISCUSSION: These findings highlight the potential of BTK inhibition as a selective and sustainable immunomodulatory strategy for both B cells and myeloid cells in the context of chronic CNS inflammation. Despite their efficacy, broad-spectrum immunosuppressive therapies often fail to provide targeted immune modulation. By contrast, BTK inhibition promotes regulatory B-cell properties while leaving other B-cell functions intact, providing the basis for its broad use—potentially in combination with established anti-inflammatory agents

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Apheresis therapies in MOGAD: a retrospective study of 117 therapeutic interventions in 571 attacks

    Background Incomplete attack remission is the main cause of disability in myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease (MOGAD). Apheresis therapies such as plasma exchange and immunoadsorption are widely used in neuroimmunology. Data on apheresis outcomes in MOGAD attacks remain limited. Methods We retrospectively evaluated all apheresis treated attacks occurring in patients with MOGAD between 2008 and 2023 at 18 Neuromyelitis Optica Study Group centres. Treatment response was categorised as complete, partial or no remission. Preattack and follow-up Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) and visual Functional System Scores (FSS) were used to calculate absolute outcomes (ΔEDSS/Δvisual FSS). Predictors of complete remission were analysed using a generalised linear mixed model. Results Apheresis was used for 117/571 (20.5%) attacks in 85/209 (40.7%) patients. Attacks with simultaneous optic neuritis and myelitis were treated more often with apheresis (42.4%, n=14) than isolated myelitis (25.2%, n=35), cerebral manifestation (21.0%, n=17) or isolated optic neuritis (17.6%, n=51). Apheresis was initiated as first-line therapy in 12% (4.5 (IQR 0–11) days after attack onset), second-line therapy in 62% (15 (IQR 6.75–31) days) and third-line therapy in 26% (30 (IQR 19–42) days). Complete remission was achieved in 21%, partial remission in 70% and no remission in 9% of patients. First-line apheresis (OR 2.5, p=0.040) and concomitant disease-modifying therapy (OR 1.5, p=0.011) were associated with complete remission. Both parameters were also associated with a favourable ΔEDSS. No differences in outcomes were observed between the apheresis types. Conclusion Apheresis is frequently used in MOGAD attacks.     Intrathecal Antibody Production Against Epstein-Barr, Herpes Simplex, and Other Neurotropic Viruses in Autoimmune Encephalitis

    Background and Objectives Neurotropic viruses are suspected to play a role in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases of the CNS such as the association between the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and multiple sclerosis (MS). A group of autoimmune encephalitis (AE) is linked to antibodies against neuronal cell surface proteins. Because CNS infection with the herpes simplex virus can trigger anti–NMDA receptor (NMDAR) encephalitis, a similar mechanism for EBV and other neurotropic viruses could be postulated. To investigate for previous viral infections of the CNS, intrathecally produced virus-specific antibody synthesis was determined in patients with AE. Methods Antibody-specific indices (AIs) against EBV and measles, rubella, varicella zoster, herpes simplex virus, and cytomegalovirus were determined in 27 patients having AE (anti-NMDAR encephalitis, n = 21, and LGI1 encephalitis, n = 6) and in 2 control groups comprising of 30 patients with MS and 21 patients with noninflammatory CNS diseases (NIND), which were sex and age matched. Results An intrathecal synthesis of antibodies against EBV was found in 5/27 (19%) patients with AE and 2/30 (7%) of the patients with MS. All these patients had also at least 1 additional elevated virus-specific AI. In contrast, in none of the patients with NIND, an elevated virus-specific AI was detected. Discussion Intrathecally produced antibodies against EBV can be found in patients with AE and MS but only together with antibodies against different neurotropic viruses.
