Presence and abundance of microplastics in edible freshwater mussel (Batissa violacea) on Fiji’s main island of Viti Levu

    No full text
The abundance and identification of microplastics were investigated for the first time in the gills and soft tissues of freshwater mussels (Batissa violacea) harvested from five rivers in Fiji. Microplastics were found in 100% of the mussels sampled from all the rivers. The average site concentration varied from 2.78 ± 0.40 to 6.84 ± 0.89 microplastics per gram of dry weight. The overall average concentration was 5.93 ± 0.39 microplastics per mussel. This is concerning because these mussels, commonly known as kai, are an important source of protein and income for many people. Microplastic concentration in mussels was significantly dependent on sampled location but evenly distributed among tissues. The dominant size of microplastics was <0.4 mm, representing 52 and 50% of all microplastic in gills and soft tissue respectively. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy in attenuated total reflectance (FTIR–ATR) was used for polymer identification of the isolated microplastics. Nylon was the most dominant type of polymer followed by polyolefins. Freshwater mussels in Fiji are an important component of the artisanal fishery, the diet of local communities and an emerging export commodity. These results showed that freshwater mussels are ingesting microplastics in their natural environment and, thus, they represent a potential health problem for human consumption.Peer reviewe

The originality of Metastasio's Ciro riconosciuto between a Meropian and a Cyrian current.

The emphasis that this thesis would like to give to the Metastasian work, usually and deservedly full of comments on poetics, is rather based on an intertextual comparison, which highlights the originality of the Ciro riconosciuto. The focus on this drama in particular occurs first with the analysis of the myth of Merope from the sixteenth century to Metastasio, starting with the titles of the various works, the methods of recognition and the names of the characters. In fact, from this comparison it is noted that from the precedents to Metastasio two directions emerge, which I have called the 'Meropeus' and 'Cirian' vein, wisely merged or merged into Ciro riconosciuto. I tried to explain how the attention to the characters of the mother and child in such a particular way is also probably linked to the personal story of the Empress Elizabeth, dedicatee of the drama. From an intertextuality external to the author, the contribution of Cyrus to the Metastasian poetic career is then analyzed, determining how he is once again an extremely mature, original and key character, almost a synthetic turning point of a first season. I tried to keep an attention to the texts, often not very protagonists of the Metastasian criticism, with the hope that their richness will not be lost and the interest in the individual works will grow more and more. Finally, especially with regard to the comparison with Giulio Cesare Sorrentino, a window of research seems open to me

Figure S1 Map of the study area with distribution of sample locations, specifying year by color and number of samples by size of circle. Redrawn from Anderson et al. (2019).-- Figure S2 Distribution of observed heterozygosity values in the initial dataset prior to extracting high heterozygosity individuals (blue, ‘Initial’) and the final dataset (red, ‘Final’).-- Table S1 Number of loci retained through quality filtering process. NB: the order of filtering steps changed slightly between manuscripts; also the new dataset was filtered twice, first for extraction of low quality individuals (‘initial’ column) and then for the creation of a final dataset for genetic analysis (‘final’ column). To confirm robustness of results, an ‘alternative updated’ version of the final dataset is also reported here, which extracted the same individuals as the ‘updated final’ dataset prior to employing alternative thresholds in the final filtering steps. MAF = Minor allele frequency, HWE = Hardy-Weinberg expectation, LD = Linkage disequilibrium, LUPS = Loci under potential selection, FDR = False discovery rate.-- Table S2 Adjusted expected heterozygosity (Hnb), observed heterozygosity (Ho) and inbreeding coefficient (FIS) compared between results from original and updated analyses. Results from the new dataset using alternative filtering thresholds are provided in parentheses.-- Table S3 Fixation index (FST) values from the original data are below the diagonal and comparable values from the current study are above the diagonal. Results produced by the alternative new dataset are provided in parentheses above the diagonal. Unlike in the main document that reports p values adjusted by false discovery rate, p values here are adjusted using a Bonferroni correction (alpha value threshold of 0.00238). Significant values are bold.-- Figure S3 Discriminant Analyses of Principal Components produced by A) the original dataset using 62 principal components and 6 degrees of freedom, as recommended by alpha optimization analyses; B) the updated dataset using 60 principal components and 6 discriminant function, also as recommended by alpha optimization and cross validation; and C) the alternatively filtered updated dataset, also using 60 principal components and 6 discriminant function, as recommended by alpha optimization and cross validation. NB: the panel representing the original analysis is a recreation and, due to randomized initial seeding in some R coding, is very near but not an exact copy of the figure from Anderson et al 2019.-- Table S4 The k value representing the most likely number of independent genetic clusters present in a sample (from ADMIXTURE).-- Table S5 Relatedness (r) data summarized as number of dyads recommended as a particular type of relationship. NB: Anderson et al., (2019) only reported dyads that were highlighted by both software programs to increase robustness of observations, and also only focused on half- and full-sib dyads because there were sufficient novel observations without considering more distance degrees of relatedness. In the current study, we report COANCESTRY and RelatedAdmix results separately and incorporate more relationship degrees to better illustrate the change in results. Results from the alternatively filtered updated dataset are reported in parentheses.Peer reviewe

Kinship genomics approach to study mating systems in a depleted sea turtle rookery

Knowledge of demographic processes and life history strategies is necessary for the conservation and management of endangered sea turtle populations, but it is difficult to ascertain because of the limited accessibility to marine environments that sea turtles use during the different stages of their life cycle. In such cases, molecular genetics and genomic approaches are useful to assess mating systems and operational sex ratios (OSR), which ultimately influence demography. This pilot study used genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genetic markers for exploring kinship and mating systems in sea turtles where major obstacles prevent a comprehensive assessment in the wild. We sampled 217 young hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata) of unknown parentage that had originally been collected locally from seven nests and were being temporarily kept in captivity by Treasure Island Ltd as part of its captive rearing conservation project at Bounty and Treasure Islands, Fiji, in the South Pacific. The raw dataset comprised 13,573 SNPs, of which we retained 639 SNPs for parentage and relatedness analyses. Our findings from seven different pairs of parents suggest a 1:1 male:female OSR and demonstrate that genome-wide SNP genotyping approaches can be used to infer OSR. Knowledge of OSR can help evaluate the magnitude of the impact of warming temperatures and consequent feminisation in sea turtles. Our approach can complement or substitute field observation of breeding males and nesting females when logistical or budgetary constraints prevent observation of OSR in wild sea turtle populations. This approach allows inference of OSR. Protection of beaches with a higher number of pairs of parents should be prioritised to increase genetic resilience. Conservation actions in rookeries with a female-skewed OSR should be prioritised to address population declines in the long run.The research was supported by The University of the South Pacific (USP SRT grant F1006-RI001-71502-623 to S.P. and C.R. and USP FRC grant F3086-FST15-71502-001 to S.S.P.).Peer reviewe

De perros a bestias: Perros hambrientos de Ciro Alegría

    Get PDF

    Fetoendoscopy, The author replies

The precision lent by Akgu ̈ r and Olguner to our experimental model of gastroschisis using fetoendoscopy is altogether welcome. The distinctions they make are good ones semantically. They are correct when they say that amniotic fluid (AF)exchange is different from amnioinfusion. Both methods are used to lower the intraamniotic meconium concentration. AF exchange can be used in all cases (with or without oligohydramnios), and we think that it will probably prove to be superior to amnioinfusion alone, which is already used in clinical cases with severe oligohydramnios [1, 4, 5]. In our study, we implanted a subcutaneous port so as to minimize repetitive utero puncture and then be able to perform the AF exchange several times, far more often than actually acceptable in clinical practice. However, tolerance was not as good as we had hoped [2], even in ewes. The induction of fetal diuresis by furosemide as proposed by Hakgu ̈ der et al. seems to be a promising alternative therapy [3]

[Ciro Alegria deals with the problems of the Indians in South America and for this reason his novels are classified as Indianist. The author knew in depth the problems of the Indians since he was born in the Peruvian mountains. Alegria only wrote four books: The Golden Serpent, The Hungry Dogs, The World is Wide and Foreign and Duel of Knights. These four books are enough to put him at the top of Latin American writers.

Transumbilical open laparoscopy: a simple method of avoiding complications in pediatric surgery

    No full text
The author reports his experience with a new procedure, transumbilical open laparoscopy (TUOL), to obtain the pneumoperitoneum in children operated upon laparoscopically. TUOL was designed to avoid complications related to closed introduction of the first trocar, and consists in the visually-guided introduction of the first trocar transumbilically without any need for a pursestring suture, with an operative time of about 1 min. The author recommends TUOL as it is easier, less expensive, and less time-consuming compared to other techniques

Una praelectio omerica di Niccolò Leonico Tomeo (BAV, Ross. 997)

    No full text
The Rossianus 997, a manuscript now preserved in the Vatican Library, transmits part of the correspondence of the Venetian humanist Niccolò Leonico Tomeo (1456-1531). In the last few folios of this slender codex, survives a still unpublished text, an inaugural lecture opening a university-course on the Iliad, dated 1486. The name of the author is unknown but thanks to several internal clues we are now able to attribute this text to the same Niccolò Leonico Tomeo, thus adding a new piece of evidence concerning his early years in Padua and the succession of the first teachers of Greek in that city. The new attribution lead to the discovery of a manuscript of the Iliad annotated by Tomeo, possibly connected to his lectures on the text. Following a detailed study of the structure of the text and a full account of the sources exploited by the author, we offer an editio princeps of the lecture accompanied by a commentary
