Trends in conservation biology: Progress or procrastination in a new millennium?
Since the 1990s the number of papers published by four mainstream conservation journals (Conservation
Biology, Biological Conservation, Biodiversity and Conservation and Oryx) has increased by 133%. The main
subject areas of research have not changed over time, with population biology, habitat change, community
ecology and species conservation remaining the most popular topics. Equally, mammals, birds, invertebrates
and plants have remained the most popular taxa, and – surprisingly – the number of papers
dealing with general or global issues or using molecular approaches has remained low. Although collaboration
increased over time, most conservation biology is still conducted by researchers working in
developed countries. Most research published from developing countries in the 1990s did not have a local
researcher as co-author. This trend has now been reversed, although there is only marginal evidence of an
increase in collaboration between authors from developed and developing countries. Although conservation
science has undergone dramatic technological changes as we have moved into the new millennium,
published research remains rooted within the cultural traditions of developed countries, with a continuing
emphasis on charismatic taxa

Gaming addiction in adolescence (revisited)
Gaming addiction has become a topic of increasing research interest. Over the last 25 years, I have written many articles on adolescent video gaming for Education and Health as it is one of the research fields that is constantly evolving. In fact, over the last decade, there has been a significant increase in the number of scientific studies examining various aspects of online addiction particularly among adolescents and young adults (Kuss & Griffiths, 2012; Kuss, Griffiths, Karila & Billieux, 2014). Although the amount and the quality of research in the field has progressed much over this period, it is still in its infancy compared to other more established behavioural addictions (such as pathological gambling). This article briefly examines (i) how adolescent gaming addiction research has changed over the last three decades, (ii) how online gaming addiction has gained genuine psychiatric status, (iii) excessive gaming as an addiction, and (iv) where the gaming addiction field is going
Assessing the global zoo response to the amphibian crisis through 20-year trends in captive collections
Global amphibian declines are one of the biggest challenges currently facing the conservation
community, and captive breeding is one way to address this crisis. Using information from the International
Species Information System zoo network, we examined trends in global zoo amphibian holdings across
species, zoo region, and species geographical region of origin from 1994 to 2014. These trends were compared
before and after the 2004 Global Amphibian Assessment to assess whether any changes occurred and whether
zoo amphibian conservation effort had increased. The numbers of globally threatened species (GTS) and
their proportional representation in global zoo holdings increased and this rate of increase was significantly
greater after 2004. North American, European, and Oceanian GTS were best represented in zoos globally, and
proportions of Oceanian GTS held increased the most since 2004. South American and Asian GTS had the
lowest proportional representation in zoos. At a regional zoo level, European zoos held the lowest proportions
of GTS, and this proportion did not increase after 2004. Since 1994, the number of species held in viable
populations has increased, and these species are distributed among more institutions. However, as of 2014,
zoos held 6.2% of globally threatened amphibians, a much smaller figure than for other vertebrate groups and
one that falls considerably short of the number of species for which ex situ management may be desirable.
Although the increased effort zoos have put into amphibian conservation over the past 20 years is encouraging,
more focus is needed on ex situ conservation priority species. This includes building expertise and capacity
in countries that hold them and tracking existing conservation efforts if the evidence-based approach to
amphibian conservation planning at a global level is to be further developed

Social responsibility in online gambling: voluntary limit setting
Allowing players to set spending limits would be a solution to tackle the problem of gambling addiction. Dr Richard T.A. Wood and Dr Mark D. Griffiths, two experts in the field of gambling psychology, look into recent research investigating how players react to monitoring their gambling expenditure

Quantum Griffiths Inequalities
We present a general framework of Griffiths inequalities for quantum systems. Our approach is based on operator inequalities associated with self-dual cones and provides a consistent viewpoint of the Griffiths inequality. As examples, we discuss the quantum Ising model, quantum rotor model, Bose-Hubbard model, and Hubbard model. We present a model-independent structure that governs the correlation inequalities
53893: Pre war: Richard Ellis and Arthur Griffiths with family
My grandfather, Private Richard Griffiths is standing top left, his brother is Ellis middle left and brother Arthur is seated on the left at the front.
Richard Griffiths, my dear Grandfather, was 36 years old when, on 9th December 1915 he enlisted in the 3rd Battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers.
A kindly, quiet, man with a deep love of literature and music, he was a Master Tailor and Cutter with Beaty Bros Liverpool. He left behind his wife, Kate, and three young children, Richie, Hugh Tryfan, and Olwen as he went to war.
The same year his two younger brothers, Ellis and Arthur also enlisted. On at least one occasion they went into action together, and, since the two older brothers were teetotal they passed the ration of spirits they received before ˜going over the top' to Arthur, who was then ˜mentioned in dispatches'. Richard were overseas
They had been overseas for over a year when sometime in early 1918 Richard was shot in both arms in battle and taken prisoner by the German Forces.
was shot in both arms in battle in early 1918 and taken prisoner by the German Forces.
He always remembered that the German Doctors had taken the trouble to ask him what he did in civilian life and when he had replied that he was a tailor, they had said they would do their best to take care of his hands and restore the movement and feeling to his fingers. He carried the scars of the bullet wounds throughout his life but always remembered the kindness and thoughtfulness of the German doctors.
The main camp at Lager Lechfeld was a large one with different sections for the different Allied nationalities. British prisoners were lucky compared to the Russians and Serbians, as they received occasional parcels from the British Red Cross. There was some bartering with the other allies, however. A Russian had carefully whittled a beautiful wooden box with a hinge and carved lid from a single piece of wood he had found around the camp, and he exchanged a bar of soap from his parcel for this box, which remains a family treasure to this day. Prisoners were also allowed to send home photos of themselves and the camp as postcards, and in return were allowed to keep one photo of their family.
The many hundreds of prisoners would organise concerts for themselves and the guards, and Richard, having a fine singing voice was always in demand. The guards would shout You sing, Welshie, and Taid would sing. ˜Arafa Don', ˜Elen Fwyn' and ˜Sul Y Blodau', those most affecting of Welsh tenor solos having an airing in the depths of Bavaria, before a cosmopolitan and captive audience.
Private Richard Griffiths 41122 (3rd Battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers) was repatriated at the end of the war and finally demobbed and transferred to the reserves with two blue chevrons (signifying two years Overseas Service) and one wound stripe on 11 April 1919. His two brothers Ellis and Arthur also returned safely to Liverpool.
However, he was to feel the effects of war again in 1940, when, having established a busy and successful Tailor's shop on North John Street, Liverpool, this received a direct hit during the blitz “ not getting proper compensation from the Board of Trade, he started again from scratch at over 60 years of age.
He lived until the age of 86, a tolerant, intelligent, hardworking and gentle man, loved and respected by everyone who knew him.</p
A Systematic Review of Online Sex Addiction and Clinical Treatments Using CONSORT Evaluation
Researchers have suggested that the advances of the Internet over the past two decades have gradually eliminated traditional offline methods of obtaining sexual material. Additionally, research on cybersex and/or online sex addictions has increased alongside the development of online technology. The present study extended the findings from Griffiths’ (2012) systematic empirical review of online sex addiction by additionally investigating empirical studies that implemented and/or documented clinical treatments for online sex addiction in adults. A total of nine studies were identified and then each underwent a CONSORT evaluation. The main findings of the present review provide some evidence to suggest that some treatments (both psychological and/or pharmacological) provide positive outcomes among those experiencing difficulties with online sex addiction. Similar to Griffiths’ original review, this study recommends that further research is warranted to establish the efficacy of empirically driven treatments for online sex addiction
