This dissertation focuses on the reception of the Bolognese painter Ginevra Cantofoli (1618-1672). Considered the most well-known pupil of Elisabetta Sirani (1638-1665) by local biographers, Cantofoli did not receive the same attention as her maestra during her lifetime and in subsequent centuries. In 2006, Massimo Pulini wrote the first and only monograph dedicated to Cantofoli, in which he established a corpus of paintings of turbaned young women based on the Self-Portrait as Allegory in the Painting at the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan. However, in contrast to the trend of the last twenty years of attributing more and more paintings to female artists, recent research has identified the Flemish painter Luigi Gentile (1606-1667) as the author of the first corpus attributed to Ginevra Cantofoli. This work questions how attributionism shapes the discourse of women artists' history. Why is there a lack of documentation around certain artists? How can we discuss them despite the gaps? Drawing from a corpus of feminist studies, the thesis aims to trace how Cantofoli became Sirani's pupil, apprentice, and copyist in historiography. This relationship leads us to question copying in the context of the workshop and Cantofoli's inscription within it. The repetition of works through copying opens up a discussion on the reception of the Presumed Portrait of Beatrice Cenci to examine how the numerous shifts in attributionism create myths and legends around certain works
The plague raged in Venice from 1348 to 1797, striking in successive deadly waves. Countless votive images produced as "spiritual remedies" brought solace to the faithful terrified of the ongoing scourge. However, in the retables directly related to the plague, we observe the frequent presence of dark clouds. This pattern, which has gone largely unnoticed, is studied here for the first time in detail and associated with contemporary medical theories regarding the aerial spread of the disease. The dark cloud is first examined as an iconographic motif and placed in the context of Venice's health and sanitary situation in the 15th and 16th centuries, as well as the ancient literature on the plague that influenced the humanist thought of the Venetian Renaissance. Furthermore, we examine the theoretical function of the dark cloud, as a "figure" (E. Auerbach and L. Marin), as a "pictorial graph" (H. Damisch) and as a "detail" (D. Arasse). The use of these different theoretical models allows us to reconsider the presence and possible meanings of the dark cloud as a metaphor for the plague. The thesis concludes with a typology test of the plague cloud.
The scientific revolution that distingued the italian Seicento was marked by a breakthrough in astronomical, optical and mechanical theories, giving way to emerging scientific personalities such as Galileo Galilei and Guidobaldo Del Monte. This rupture with the knowledge of the world that was established since Antiquity coincides with Caravaggio's innovative pictorial techniques. Our paper examines the relationship between art and science in Rome by analysing the artist's paintings created under the patronage of Cardinal Francesco Maria Del Monte, a strong supporter of the experimental approach that defined the studies of natural phenomena. This thesis seeks to understand in which ways the artwork’s content and subject matter, as well as stylistic techniques, reflect the scientific discourse that most probably took shape, among other sites, in Del Monte’s roman residences, the Palazzo Madama and the Casino Del Monte, known today as the Villa Boncompagnie-Ludovisi. Thus, Caravaggio’s paintings can be viewed as a reflection of the intellectually stimulating environment that he worked in. The pictures may also function as "epistemic images", meant to instruct and inform the viewer on various scientific theories. Furthermore, the importance of alchemy as an emerging legitimate science in the Cardinals circle is closely investigated. Caravaggio’s fresco painting, Jupiter, Neptune and Pluto, located in what once was Del Monte’s alchemical distillery room of the Casino Del Monte is compared to Francesco’s I de Medici’s Studiolo in the Palazzo Vecchio. It helps to further shed light on the relationship between knowledge and power and to highlight the Cardinal’s role in the new up and coming sciences
The concept of an object system, as found in Jan Gossart’s Portrait of a Merchant (ca. 1530) and Hans Holbein the Younger’s Georg Gisze (1532) aims to reevaluate works which are too often reduced to aesthetics and symbolism. By means of a multidisciplinary approach, the study aims to promote the objects represented in the paintings as the dominant actors in the staging of the social identity of the sixteenth-century merchant.
The association between art history and anthropology of techniques allows the validation of a scenography of the material merchant culture, as well as the emergence of a social commentary inherent to Gossart’s and Holbein’s artistic work. Attention to an object-oriented study also allows for new insights into how to understand the occupational portrait independently of an anagogical value, which is generally attributed to the Renaissance period.
The Portrait of a Merchant and portrait of Georg Gisze attest to a specific moment in the production of merchant portraits in northern Europe during the sixteenth century. The apparently disparate works are united by the object system represented in the paintings

During the Renaissance, the paintings by Lodewijk Toeput, known as Lodovico Pozzoserrato, contributed to enrich the iconography and the history of Venetian gardens.
Abstract
The French still lives of the first decades of the 17th century lend themselves well to meditation and to intellectual and philosophical discourses. The contribution of the French painter Jacques Linard (1597–1645) to French still lives are fundamental, however, his work is seldom studied. We wish to contribute to the research, by offering an original analysis of Still life with shells and a coral, dated in 1640, which portrays characteristics of French sensitivity. The apparent simplicity of this painting reveals a hermeneutic that goes beyond the spiritual context proper to the decrees of the Counter Reformation on art. The presence of natural objects abounds by mythological and religious symbolism, raises the question of Linard’s goal, and their relevance in 17th century French society. Using Michel Foucault’s concept of Archaeology, this memoir aims to develop with multiple points of view the message that Jacques Linard expresses pertaining to the interests of a changing France, suggested by the content, the composition and the naturalistic style of the painting. We will first relate the cultural history involving Christian symbolism, then we will carry out an original iconographic analysis in order to show the religious, moral and scientific meaning of this work of art. In 17th century France, the presence of natural objects also suggests new societal behaviour linked to ancient philosophy and scientific development which we will give an account of in correlation to the French cultural challenges that overlay its religious message.
Abstract (allemand)
Examining the writings of Christian humanists, who exercised control over the practice of the arts after the Council of Trent, this paper seeks to understand the development of landscape painting in the Early Modern period. Cardinal Federico Borromeo, the Jesuit Louis Richeome and Jean Calvin, are among those theologians who contributed to this influential Christian literature. We will mainly use the recent historiography to demonstrate the essential role played by Christian thought in the rise of the representation of nature into art. Building on some important studies, we will analyze both pictorial and architectural examples that reflect this Christian influence on the perception of nature. First, we will try to paint a picture of the religious and cultural environment in which the Christian humanists lived and developed their thinking. Our goal is to prove that Christian humanism played an important role in the development of landscape representations during the Counter-Reformation. Contemporary sources as well as their interpretation by modern historians and art historians will help us to better understand the role of Christian thought in this artistic development
