technical dimension of the human condition, expressed in fabrication activity (work)
and his works, and the political dimension of the human condition, manifested in
deeds and words. This is the development partial of a more extensive research
on early stage about the origins, the unfolding and the crisis of modernity with
its techno scientific challenges to our fundamental philosophical presuppositions,
dissolving classics antinomies and conceptual limits with which tradition has
always understood our active life, such as nature and history, human and inhuman,
subject and object, freedom and determinism, ethical and technical, work, labor and
action, science and technology, means and ends, ethics and science, automatism
and autonomy, knowledge and power, machine and body, etc.O artigo apresenta a diferenciação empreendida por Hannah Arendt entre a
dimensão técnica da condição humana, expressa na atividade da fabricação (work)
e suas obras, e a dimensão política da condição humana, manifesta em feitos e
palavras. Trata-se do desenvolvimento parcial de uma pesquisa mais ampla e em
fase inicial que investiga as origens, os desdobramentos e a crise da modernidade
tecnológica, evidenciando o modo como são hoje desafiados nossos pressupostos
filosóficos tradicionais, diluídas nossas mais consolidadas antinomias e dissolvidas
as fronteiras conceituais com as quais temos compreendido há séculos nossa vida

Programa de Pós-Graduação em Literatura.No presente trabalho realiza-se uma leitura intertextual entre a Bíblia e Os escravos, coletânea de poemas de teor abolicionista do poeta romântico Antônio Frederico de Castro Alves (1847-1871), objetivando demonstrar que os textos poéticos arquitetam-se na desconstrução e reconstrução dos textos bíblicos. A leitura dos poemas centra-se nos personagens: Deus, Eros e Mãe, os quais conformam uma trindade poética/sagrada. A pesquisa divide-se em três movimentos: Prelúdios do sagrado no Romantismo, Tríade melódica e À guisa de coda: trindade poética. No primeiro efetuam-se algumas aproximações ao conceito do sagrado e aos Romantismos francês e brasileiro. O seguinte corresponde à leitura das composições, através das linhas melódicas: A dualidade de Deus, A ambivalência de Eros e O duplo calvário da Mãe escrava. E no último movimento amalgamam-se as inter-relações entre a trindade cristã e poética e os dramas bíblico e poético

Speculative Attacks on Debts and Optimum Currency Area: A Welfare Analysis
No full textResorting to an extension of the debt crisis model of Cole and Kehoe (JIE 1996), we evaluate financial aspects of an optimum currency area. Our focus is to appraise the welfare of a country, which belongs to a monetary union and might suffer a speculative attack on its public debt. A default may be avoided by an inflation tax on common-currency debt, but this decision depends on majority voting and have costs associated with it. Moreover, the model considers symmetry between national and central governments' decisions about inflation and also describes the loss in international bankers' confidence towards one country being passed on to another. One of our results is that, for a country with low weight in the voting system, common-currency regime is superior in terms of expected welfare to dollarization and may be a better choice than the local-currency one, as the central bank under the latter regime undergoes some political influence from its government.
Inflation Targeting in Brazil: Constructing Credibility under Exchange Rate Volatility
No full textThis paper assesses the challenges faced by the inflation-targeting regime in Brazil. The confidence crisis in the future performance of the Brazilian economy and the increase in risk aversion in international markets were responsible for a sudden stop of capital inflows in 2002 that caused a significant depreciation of the exchange rate. The inflation-targeting framework has played a critical role in macroeconomic stabilization. We stress two important challenges: construction of credibility and exchange rate volatility. The estimations indicate the following results: i) the inflation targets have worked as an important coordinator of expectations; ii) the Central Bank has reacted strongly to inflation expectations; iii) there has been a reduction in the degree of inflation persistence; and iv) the exchange rate pass-through for "administered or monitored" prices is two times higher than for "market" prices.

On Shadow-Prices of Banks in Real-Time Gross Settlement Systems
No full textI model the functioning of real-time gross settlement systems for large-value interbank transfers as a linear programming problem in which queueing arrangements, splitting of payments, Lombard loans, and interbank credit exposures arise as primal solutions. Then I use the dual programming problem associated with the maximization of the total flow of payments in order to determine the shadow-prices of banks in the payment system. We use these shadow-prices to set personalized intraday monetary policies such as reserve requirements, availability of Central Bank credit to temporarily illiquid banks, extension of intraday interbank credit exposures, etc., so as to make the payment system more efficient and less costly in terms of systemic liquidity. The dual approach shows us how to make banks correctly internalize the intraday network externalities they create in the real-time gross settlement system and provides an objective standard for the daily microprudential surveillance of the payment system.
Out-Of-The_Money Monte Carlo Simulation Option Pricing: the join use of Importance Sampling and Descriptive Sampling
No full textAs in any Monte Carlo application, simulation option valuation produces imprecise estimates. In such an application, Descriptive Sampling (DS) has proven to be a powerful Variance Reduction Technique. However, this performance deteriorates as the probability of exercising an option decreases. In the case of out of the money options, the solution is to use Importance Sampling (IS). Following this track, the joint use of IS and DS is deserving of attention. Here, we evaluate and compare the benefits of using standard IS method with the joint use of IS and DS. We also investigate the influence of the problem dimensionality in the variance reduction achieved. Although the combination IS+DS showed gains over the standard IS implementation, the benefits in the case of out-of-the-money options were mainly due to the IS effect. On the other hand, the problem dimensionality did not affect the gains. Possible reasons for such results are discussed.
