The multiple implications of making democracy effective today: the challenges that surfaced in the 2002 United Nations human development report
The purpose of this paper is to reflect upon how the human Development Report of 2002, sponsored by the UNDP, a United Nations'body, presents the way and misleading ways of democracy in the world today. The research procedures were focused on a documentary research that resorted to official texts published on UNDP/UNO's site which aims to show the improvements (or not) that happened in several fields of social life, such as: democracy and participation, justice and income distribution, health and education, among others. Its purpose was to demonstrate that the HDR/2002 showed not only the hindrances for rendering democracy effective in the current world, but also the expectations which indicate the development of germs of a possible expansion of a wider world political pluralism. The search for consubstantiality between democracy and social development validates the HDR/2002 which was built due to the challenges posed by social economical goals called the Millennium Development Goal
Democratization as a process of distribution, movement and balance of power in Norbert Elias38
State intervention forms in the social áreain Brazil: some challenges facing the country on the threshold of XXI
The purpose of this study is to show that in Brazil the expectations concerning the conceiving of universal policies are followed by a broad debate on the necessity of undermining the oligarchic procedures. By means of a documental research it is observed that in the 1990s and 2000s a long lasting combat to the patrimonial practices did not occur, as was expected by all those who wished that a democratic state of law took effect in the country. This it is demonstrated that these practices exclude the possibility of carrying out universal social policies, since they presuppose a national collective project concerned with the conceiving of long-term social investments, what is possible to be done by means of profound institutional changes that do not match up with the maintenance of an oligarchic control patter
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
Management, entrepreneurship, leadership and marketing in the curriculum matrix of dental schools in the state of São Paulo
One of the biggest challenges for Dentistry students upon completing their undergraduate degree is entering the job market. In general, the Pedagogical Political Project of undergraduate Dentistry courses has an extremely clinical character, focused on disciplines that act directly on teeth and adjacent structures, in such a way that the job market is approached superficially and topics such as management , the job market, entrepreneurship, and even fees and taxes are practically forgotten in the professional training curriculum. In Brazil, the southeast region, with 89 million inhabitants, is the most populous region in Brazil and alone accounts for 201,888 dentists, which represents more than 51% of the total number of dentists in the country. Similarly, Dentistry courses are mainly concentrated in the Southeast region (52%). The purpose of this work is to analyze the presence and characteristics of curricular components related to management, entrepreneurship, leadership and marketing in the structure and teaching methods of undergraduate Dentistry courses in the state of São Paulo. This is an observational study, using the Accreditation Platform for Undergraduate Dentistry Courses of the State of São Paulo with the Ministry of Education. The following items will be analyzed: the existence of curricular components in relation to the proposed themes, the most recurrent names of the curricular components, minimum and maximum workload, mandatory/optional classification, theoretical/practical teaching condition and in which year the curricular components were inserted. The data presented indicate that of the 32 universities in São Paulo, 13 incorporate subjects into their curricula that train dentists in communication, entrepreneurship and leadership skills, and among these, only one public institution (Faculty of Dentistry of Ribeirão Preto, USP). These educational institutions consider the importance of the Dentistry student, in addition to clinical diagnosis, planning and treatment, being able to build and maintain the doctor-patient relationship, manage their office, acquire leadership skills and understand the concepts of centered care. in the patient. Knowledge, skills and attitudes about leadership, entrepreneurship, management and marketing are fundamental for all dentistry students and dental surgeons. Although the Brazilian National Curricular Guidelines indicate the flexibility of the curricula of Dentistry courses, it is possible for each educational institution to formulate its own pedagogical approach within its curricular matrix to cover and adapt to the local social reality, respecting the peculiarities of each location. However, it is necessary to develop a minimum set of common leadership, management and marketing skills and competencies in the training of professionals who will work to promote oral health
