Accuracy and optimal sampling in Monte Carlo solution of population balance equations
Implementation of a Monte Carlo simulation for the solution of population balance equations (PBEs) requires choice of initial sample number (N0), number of replicates (M), and number of bins for probability distribution reconstruction (n). It is found that Squared Hellinger Distance, H2, is a useful measurement of the accuracy of Monte Carlo (MC) simulation, and can be related directly to N0, M, and n. Asymptotic approximations of H2 are deduced and tested for both one-dimensional (1-D) and 2-D PBEs with coalescence. The central processing unit (CPU) cost, C, is found in a power-law relationship, C= aMNb0, with the CPU cost index, b, indicating the weighting of N0 in the total CPU cost. n must be chosen to balance accuracy and resolution. For fixed n, M × N0 determines the accuracy of MC prediction; if b > 1, then the optimal solution strategy uses multiple replications and small sample size. Conversely, if 0 < b < 1, one replicate and a large initial sample size is preferred

The first statewide, open access dataset tracking public records requests in New Jersey
State freedom of information laws are vital mechanisms for providing public access to government records and supporting civic engagement through the effectuation of a public policy of transparency at the state level within the United States, not unlike their federal counterpart, the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). New Jersey state law facilitates public access to government records under the Open Public Records Act (OPRA). Codified at N.J.S.A. 47:1A-1 et seq., OPRA applies to state, county and local public authorities but exempts the judicial and legislative branches from its disclosure requirements. Since OPRA took effect in 2002, it has been difficult to track the full extent of law's impact across New Jersey's 21 counties, 565 municipalities, and numerous state agencies, school districts and independent authorities, all of which must individually respond to requests under the law. To the best of the author's knowledge, no official source has compiled detailed metadata tracking the content and disposition of OPRA requests at the state, regional and municipal levels within New Jersey using individual requests, and authorities rarely proactively disclose their responses to requests they receive, necessitating further data collection to support research into the impacts of this law. This article presents the OPRAmachine dataset: data containing detailed metadata on public records requests submitted to state & local public authorities in New Jersey since October 2017 collected through the implementation of information and communication technologies (ICT) to facilitate the freedom of information request process. The data was collected using an open-source web interface that allowed users to submit an OPRA request to public authorities, with responses stored in a database and made available via the internet. After their request received a response, users were asked to answer a single survey question describing the status of their request, with their answer used to classify the request. Descriptive statistics, tables and frequencies were produced for the dataset and are included in this article. These data will assist state policymakers and other interested parties with assessing trends in OPRA requests across multiple types of public authorities & geographic regions. These data can inform more efficient government records management procedures, foster civic engagement by increasing government transparency and can inform the development of possible reforms to the OPRA law by showing trends in requests & responses that can be used to evaluate the law's implementation throughout the state.Peer reviewe
Aerodynamic performance of low-to-moderate aspect ratio wings at low Reynolds numbers
This thesis presents wind tunnel results of wings of low-to-moderate aspect ratio (2\AR5) tested at low Reynolds numbers (40,000 to 160,000). All models tested had a chord length of 3~in and a wingspan of 7 to 17.5~in. Experiments were conducted in the low-turbulence wind tunnel in the Subsonic Aerodynamics Research Laboratory at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). An external three-component platform force balance was designed, fabricated and assembled to perform the experiments. The balance design methodology, calibration methodology, experimental setup, wing mounting setup validation and historical data comparisons are described in detail. Low Reynolds number tests performed on a rectangular wing having an aspect ratio of 4 and using the Wortmann FX~63-137 airfoil showed the existence of a critical Reynolds number of 90,000 for which a jump in performance characteristics was observed. Pre-stall and post-stall hysteresis was captured at the critical Reynolds number. Flow visualization photographs for the Wortmann wing at different angles of attack are presented. Finally, aerodynamic performance measurements taken for ten flat-plate rectangular and tapered wings are also presented and discussed. A detailed analysis of trends from aerodynamic performance measurements taken for the ten flat-plate wings showed a number of interesting effects with respect to Reynolds number, aspect ratio, and taper ratio. No critical Reynolds number and aerodynamic hysteresis was however found for the flat-plate wings in the Reynolds number range tested.Item withdrawn by Mark Zulauf ([email protected]) on 2012-12-13T14:20:34Z

Representing spray zone with cross flow as a well-mixed compartment in a high shear granulator
The spray zone is an important region to control nucleation of granules in a high shear granulator. In this study, a spray zone with cross flow is quantified as a well-mixed compartment in a high shear granulator. Granulation kinetics is quantitatively derived at both particle-scale and spray zone-scale. Two spatial decay rates, DGSDR (droplet-granule spatial decay rate) ζDG and DPSDR (droplet-primary particle spatial decay rate) ζDP, which are functions of volume fraction and diameter of particulate species within the powder bed, are defined to simplify the deduction. It is concluded that in cross flow, explicit analytical results show that the droplet concentration is subject to exponential decay with depth which produces a numerically infinite depth of spray zone in a real penetration process. In a well-mixed spray zone, the depth of the spray zone is 4/(ζDG + ζDP) and π2/3(ζDG + ζDP) in cuboid and cylinder shape, respectively. The first-order droplet-based collision rates of, nucleation rate B0 and rewetting rate RW0 are uncorrelated with the flow pattern and shape of the spray zone. The second-order droplet-based collision rate, nucleated granule-granule collision rate RGG, is correlated with the mixing pattern. Finally, a real formulation case of a high shear granulation process is used to estimate the size of the spray zone. The results show that the spray zone is a thin layer at the powder bed surface. We present, for the first time, the spray zone as a well-mixed compartment. The granulation kinetics of a well-mixed spray zone could be integrated into a Population Balance Model (PBM), particularly to aid development of a distributed model for product quality prediction
The Social Construction of the Child Sex Offender Explored by Narrative
The notion of "child sex offender" provokes aversion, but it may be that it is a social construction. We suggest that a Dominant narrative, in which child sex offenders are constructed as irredeemable, persists, despite the emergence of assumption challenging Alternative narratives. A story completion method was used to elicit themes of Dominant or Alternative narratives, theory-led thematic analysis was used to identify them. The use and analysis of narrative and free-form stories are well established in social research, but remain a novel concept in the study of offenders. The results support the persistence of the Dominant narrative with two notable exceptions. Conclusions centre on utility of the narrative method to examine offender constructions, and the pervasiveness of Dominant narratives. Impact of scour on lateral resistance of wind turbine monopiles: An experimental study
The majority of offshore wind structures are supported on large-diameter, rigid monopile foundations. These piles may be subjected to scour due to the waves and currents that causes a loss of soil support and consequently decreases the pile capacity and system stiffness. The results of numerical models suggest that the shape of the scour hole affects the magnitude of pile capacity loss; however, there is a dearth of experimental test data that quantify this effect. This paper presents a series of centrifuge model tests on an instrumented model pile that investigates the effects of scour-hole geometry on the response of a laterally loaded pile embedded in sand. The pile instrumentation allowed load–displacement and p–y (soil reaction – displacement) curves to be derived. Three scour geometries (global, local wide, and local narrow) and three scour depths (1D, 1.5D, and 2D; where D is pile diameter) were modelled. For all three scour types, pile moment capacity decreased almost linearly with increase of scour depth. Simple empirical relations were proposed to evaluate the detrimental influence of scour on the pile moment capacity. Lateral response of rigid monopiles subjected to cyclic loading: Centrifuge modelling
In this study, a total number of 20 centrifuge tests were carried out to investigate monopile behaviour under lateral cyclic loading. The instrumented model pile simulates an offshore wind turbine foundation with an embedment ratio of 5 installed in sand layers with two relative densities of 80% and 50%. The influence of the directional characteristic and amplitude of cyclic load on pile lateral behaviour was studied. The data analysis focused on the influence of cyclic load on the accumulation of lateral displacement and evolution of secant stiffness of the foundation system. The most damaging cyclic load type (which can cause the most accumulated pile displacement) is identified as two-way loading, and it was observed that cyclic load always increases the pile secant stiffness. A new model for the prediction of evolution of accumulated displacement and change in secant stiffness has been formulated. An example of the procedure developed is presented for a typical field monopile subjected to cyclic loading. Lastly, the performance of the new model is demonstrated and predicted results are compared with field test data.
