Eliciting ELT students’ Understanding of Plagiarism in Academic Writing
Given that the term ‘plagiarism’ is open to multiple interpretations, resulting in confusion among students and teachers alike, research that investigates the current state of empirical evidence and sheds light on students’ ability to define and detect this notion has important pedagogical implications. This study examines undergraduate English Language Teaching (ELT) students’ understanding of plagiarism in academic writing through qualitative data collection methods. After the focus group filled in the open-ended questionnaire, they were exposed to two sets of texts each containing an original, a plagiarized and non-plagiarized copy. The copy in the first set featured mainly word-for-word plagiarism while the copy in the second set was plagiarized in terms of illicit paraphrasing. The students were asked to identify whether there is any plagiarism in each copy and assess the texts regarding their acceptability in the format of an interview and think-aloud protocols. The results of the open-ended questionnaire and interviews were compared revealing that although all the students were able to define plagiarism correctly, most of them failed to identify it in the written text. The study also uncovered discrepancies in how the students view the aforementioned types of plagiarism
To the 100th anniversary of Irina Antonova
This article is dedicated to the legendary Russian museum figure Irina Antonova (20.03.1922 —
30.11.2020), who worked at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts for 75 years, 52 years of
which as its director. The development of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts under the
leadership of Irina Antonova is seen by the author of this article as part of the evolution of
museum work in the Soviet Union and the Russian Federation. The article emphasizes that the Pushkin Museum was often ahead of its time, laying the groundwork for major changes. For
example, with the opening of the Museum of Private Collections as part of the State Museum
of Fine Arts, the rehabilitation of private collecting in the country took place. The December
Nights festival created by Irina Antonova in collaboration with the brilliant pianist Svyatoslav
Richter in 1981 became a matrix of art festivals that took place in various museums of the
country during the following decades. The Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts was charged
with promoting Western art in the USSR, of which it brilliantly took the advantage when
started displaying works by Picasso, Matisse, Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, masterpieces
of drawing from the Albertina Museum in Vienna, Western European and American paintings
from American museums and others famous exhibitions. This is the visible part of Irina
Antonova’s dynamic activity. She approached academic work no less thoroughly, as well as the
organization of study and cataloguing of the collection of the State Museum of Fine Arts. And,
of course, much credit must go to Irina Antonova for preparing the program for the development
and reconstruction of the Pushkin Museum, which has been repeatedly revised and is
being finalized before our very eyes under the direction of Marina Loshak
Teachers Perceptions on Using Popular Culture when Teaching and Learning English
AbstractThis article describes the findings of two subsequent interdisciplinary research studies on popular culture conducted by the author. The first study was focused on revealing the features of popular culture by analyzing a corpus of 2000 neologisms that appeared in English in the last few decades. The second study was aimed at eliciting university teachers perceptions on the role of popular culture in English language classroom. This study was supported by the survey carried out in the framework of the research featuring 50 participants instructors at university language teaching departments and the analysis of three language textbooks in terms of appearance of popular culture. The author argues that popular culture having global supranational character, giving priority to fashionable uses of words and emotionalism might serve as a stronger encouragement of language acquisition. The article gives insight into such issues as language features of popular culture, its representation in English language classrooms on the tertiary education level and the awareness of teachers concerning the benefits of using materials on popular culture. The results outlined in the article have a potential to further motivate students towards learning English as well as improve their communicative and socio-cultural competences
Teaching Neologisms in English as a Foreign Language Classroom
AbstractThis article draws attention of English teachers to the increasing number of new words or neologisms that appear in the English language. It is argued that one can understand the culture by examining its new words, thereby neologisms should be integrated into the vocabulary material offered to English learners. After giving an overview on the current perspectives and theories on the notion of neologisms as well as eliciting the results of the survey aimed at estimating how well the English learners are familiar with this lexical group and analyzing their feedback concerning integrating it into the classroom practice, the author proposes four strategies of teaching them in the classroom. The strategies outlined in the article are experimental and have a potential to further improve communicative and cultural competences of the English learners

<p><strong>Background</strong><br />
The aim of research is retrospective studying of the frequency and structure of affect by malignant neoplasms of the maxillofacial area in one of the industrial district of Kharkov.<br />
<strong>Methods</strong><br />
The results of retrospective studying of the frequency and structure of affect by<br />
malignant neoplasms in the maxillofacial area in one of the industrial districts of<br />
Kharkiv are described in the article. The retrospective analysis was carried out taking into account the age, sex, localization and disease stages.<br />
<strong>Results</strong><br />
According to the results of the performed research it was established that the incidence during 10 years tended to growth, predominantly with the aged and senile people. The high percentage of the initially revealed patients with the advanced stages of disease was defined.<br />
<strong>Conclusions</strong><br />
Performing the retrospective analysis of the frequency and structure of malignant<br />
neoplasms of the maxillofacial area among the population of the industrial district of Kharkov, it should be stated that over the last decade the incidence trended upwards.<br />
Analysis of the frequency of detection of certain stages of the disease indicated that primary revealed advanced forms of cancer patients.<br />
The obtained data can be evaluated as the consequence of insufficient efficiency of preventive examinations and late address of patients.</p>oral cance

The effect of manipulating text difficulty and text modality on text comprehension and text processing
Reading materials are routinely simplified/scaffolded for English learners, particularly when learners are not fully proficient in the language of instruction. However, very few studies have explored the effect of such manipulations. One recent study that addressed this gap (Author A, 2021) showed that non-native speakers of English obtained higher scores in a comprehension test and a free recall task, when presented with simplified versions of both narrative and expository texts in English, in comparison to when they were presented with the original texts. Alongside this evidence, the eye-tracking data in the study indicated more efficient processing for simplified texts, as there were shorter reinspection times for simplified texts and differential processing patterns for initial, medial and final sentences between the two text conditions.
While addressing an important gap in research on text difficulty, Author A (2021) has some limitations that need to be addressed in a follow up research. For example, the study suggested that language proficiency could impact the effect of text simplification for different text modalities. However, this has not been explored systematically. The present study aims to reanalyse their data to explore the interaction between language proficiency, text modality, and text simplification. In addition, in the article by Author A (2021) found a different pattern of results for the effect of simplification using different measures. This research showed a main effect of simplification for the multiple choice measure of comprehension, but not for the free recall measure. We might consider additional analyses in order to shed light on this mismatch
