Cost-effectiveness analysis of malaria interventions using disability adjusted life years: a systematic review
Kinder in Jugendverbänden
In this book, Gunda Voigts dedicates herself to the first systematic research into the topics of “children in youth associations” and “practice of inclusion in child and youth work”. Those involved in research, politics and practice in child and youth work who want to deal with the current requirements of a consistent inclusion perspective in the sense of the UN Disability Rights Convention for this field of action will receive a valuable overview of the current status of the discussion. The results of current children's surveys are included as well as a fundamental, comprehensive analysis of previous youth association studies. With the help of qualitative expert interviews and a quantitative questionnaire survey, the author can make reliable statements about the actual reality of inclusion in youth organizations and classify the field of child and youth work in the current inclusion debate. For everyone who is involved in research, politics or practice, as an employee in youth associations, municipalities or child and youth welfare institutions, with current issues of child and youth work or in particular extracurricular offers for children or the importance of inclusion for their field of work , this book offers many new insights and suggestions
A review of methodologies for research uptake in eco-health projects conducted in rural communities in Sub-Saharan Africa
This review analyses research uptake methods which have been used by researchers in sub-Saharan Africa to determine which methods are effective for communities. The key area of thestudy is research uptake methods applicable at rural community level. The study analyses howeffective these methods are in getting research findings adopted by the community, stirringbehaviour change and raising awareness about a problem. The review makes recommendationsfor research projects that seek to conduct research uptake in the rural areas of sub-Saharan Africa.A systematic search for articles was done using Medline, PubMed and Google Scholar. Articleson the uptake of eco-health research findings at a community level were screened and analysedusing narrative synthesis. Results showed that strategies involving media, educational materialsand interpersonal communication with the communities worked most effectively. Some examplesof these were use of radio programmes, film productions, community theatre, field workers, community meetings, educational programmes, peer education and point of care displays. Thestudy concluded that to enhance research uptake in communities, innovative methods whichcapture the context of the communities involved need to be used. Selected strategies should usethe eco-health approach, engage the community and incorporate indigenous knowledge systems
Assessment of Burden of Malaria in Gwanda District, Zimbabwe, Using the Disability Adjusted Life Years
Malaria is one of the highest contributors to morbidity and mortality in Zimbabwe. However, there is paucity of knowledge regarding disability adjusted life years (DALYs) as a measure of burden of malaria in affected communities. The DALYs metric was used to assess the burden of malaria in Gwanda District with the aim of contributing to a better understanding of the impact of disease on affected communities. Data was collected from health facility malaria registers and the District Health Information System (DHIS) to estimate DALYs at household and district levels respectively. The household DALYs included 130 malaria cases from 2013 to 2015 while the DALYs for the district included 719 confirmed malaria cases from 2011 to 2015. Households lost a total of 153.89 DALYs with the majority of the disease burden (65.55%) occurring in the most economically productive age group (15–45 years) with a mean loss of 1.18 DALYs per malaria case. At district level, 251.09 DALYs were lost due to malaria and the calculated average district DALY rate for 2011–2015 was 36.29 DALYs/100,000 persons per year. It is important to estimate malaria burden to assist policy makers in making informed decisions when channelling resources for control and prevention of the disease

Economic burden of malaria on rural households in Gwanda district, Zimbabwe
Background: Malaria is a serious public health problem in sub-Saharan Africa and is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality.
Aim: To estimate the economic burden of malaria in rural households.
Setting: The study was conducted in Gwanda district of Matabeleland South in Zimbabwe. A total of five malarious wards and all their households were selected for the study frame, out of which 80 households were chosen using clinic records.
Methods: A retrospective analysis of secondary data and a cross-sectional household survey were conducted to estimate the household economic burden of malaria. Eighty households from five rural wards were identified from the health facility malaria registers and followed up. A household was eligible for inclusion if there had been at least one reported malaria case during the period of 2013−2015. Interviewer administered questionnaires were used to collect household data on economic costs of malaria.
Results: Our findings showed that households spent an average of 56.60 for managing an uncomplicated and a complicated malaria episode respectively. A household lost an average of eight productive working days per each malaria episode resulting in an average loss of 24% of the monthly household income. An estimated 35%, mostly poorer households suffered catastrophic health expenditures. Conclusion: Malaria imposes significant economic burdens particularly on the poorer and vulnerable households. Although there are no user fees at rural clinics, households incur other costs to manage a malaria patient. These costs are far worse for complicated cases
The trafficking of women for sexual exploitation in the Russian Federation
Trafficking in persons is a serious breach of human rights and the analytical problem is highlighted by the fact that exact numbers cannot be detected. In this thesis, the author analyses the social factors of the causes of sexual exploitation in the Russian Federation and analyses Russia’s compliance with the Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children, supplementing the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime provisions. The case study is about Russia due to the high rates of domestic violence against women and girls. The author concludes that four social factors cause the sexual exploitation of women and girls in Russia, which are economic inequality, shadow economy, domestic violence and inadequate legal system. Furthermore, the author concludes that based on the Protocol Russia does not comply with provisions that can be divided into five groups. These groups of provisions are protection, legislation, repatriation, prosecution and definition
The Bible and Homosexuality in Zimbabwe : A Socio-historical analysis of the political, cultural and Christian arguments in the homosexual public debate with special reference to the use of the Bible
Zugl.: Bayreuth, Univ., Diss., 2010 u.d.T.: Gunda, Masiiwa Ragies: The homosexual debate in Zimbabwe : a socio-historical analysis of the political, cultural and Christian arguments with special reference to the use of the Bible in ZimbabweBiAS 3 is a monograph which was submitted and passed as PhD thesis at the University of Bayreuth, Germany. The author revisits the subject of homosexuality in Zimbabwe, a subject that attracted the attention of the international community from 1995 when Robert Gabriel Mugabe, the President of Zimbabwe described homosexual persons as “worse than dogs and pigs”. The President’s position was widely supported by Christians and Traditionalists alike, and the Bible was used as the final arbiter, as it is the “Word of God”. The Bible was also used by homosexual persons and those sympathetic to them, such that the Bible fought against the Bible. The book highlights the interconnection between homosexuality, religion and the socio-economic and political challenges from the 1990s, and raises critical questions about the widespread selective-literal appropriation of the Bible, a practice that ignores the socio-historical context of the Bible. This is a book for biblical students, scholars and ordinary readers of the Bible who want to engage with contemporary socio-theological challenges.
