    Food safety news events classification via a hierarchical transformer model

    In light of the significance of regulatory authorities and the rising demand for information disclosure, a vast amount of information on food safety news reports is readily accessible on the Internet. The extraction of such information for precise classification and provision of appropriate safety alerts based on their respective categories has emerged as a challenging problem for academic research. Given that most food safety-related events in news reports comprise lengthy text, the pre-trained language models currently employed for text analysis are generally limited in their capability to handle long documents. This paper proposes a long-text classification model utilising hierarchical Transformers. We categorise information in long documents into two distinct types: (1) multiple text chunks meeting the length constraint and (2) essential sentences within long documents, such as headings, paragraph start and end sentences, etc. Initially, our proposed model utilises the text chunks as input to the BERT model. Then, it concatenates the output of the BERT model with the important sentences from the document and use them as input to the Transformer model for feature transformation. Finally, we utilise a classifier for food safety news classification. We conducted several comparative experiments with various commonly used text classification models on a dataset constructed from publicly available information on food regulatory websites. Our proposed method outperforms existing methods, establishing itself as the leading approach in terms of performance. [Abstract copyright: © 2023 The Author(s).

    Exploring Perceptions of Middle Class Urban Indian Women Regarding Socio-Cultural Deterrents Influencing Participation in Adult and Continuing Educational Programs

    Unlike its childhood counterpart, adult and continuing education is a voluntary activity, where adult learners partake in educational programs for the sake of realizing some explicit or implicit goal. The purpose of this study was to explore the association between socio-cultural influences and deterrents to participation of middle class urban Indian women in adult and continuing educational programs. Darkenwald and Merriam’s (1982) theory of non-participation was selected as the theoretical lens used to guide this study. This study involved collecting qualitative data to analyze participant views and was collected through 16 semi-structured interviews to explore participants’ individual perceptions concerning socio-cultural deterrents influencing participation of middle class urban Indian women in adult and continuing educational programs. Qualitative data were analyzed to discover emerging themes and sub-themes. In the second phase of the study, a modified Deterrent to Participation Scale – General (DPS-G) was used to measure data collected from the surveys completed by participants, that included specific demographic questions. Descriptive statistics were used to examine the relationships between the demographic questions and the deterrent identified on the DPS-G. The interview and survey data were used convergently to understand the relationship between socio-cultural influences and deterrents impacting participant participation in adult and continuing educational programs. The findings of the study indicated that the biggest socio-cultural influence deterring participation among middle class urban Indian women in adult and continuing educational programs is marriage. It is an Indian social norm that comes with a set of pre-defined roles and expectations, and married women find themselves consumed by fulfilling the marital and familial expectations and responsibilities and participation in adult and continuing educational program is furthest from their mind. Middle class urban Indian women do realize the importance of educational pursuits, but do not feel that they can, after marriage. They are open, however, to pursuing adult educational programs in the form of short-term skill development programs leading to income generation, although they would lead primarily to home-based work enterprises

    Selenite influence on calcium metabolism of the rat lens

    Calcium is an important factor in many cellular activities and in the maintenance of structural integrity of membranes. Calcium accumulation in the rat lens above the normal physiological range (0.11 µmol/g wet weight) has been associated with formation of cataracts. Selenite is known to influence the histological characteristics of the lens and also alter important biochemical functions. In the selenite induced cataract calcium levels increase as much as 5-fold above normal, the increase preceding appearance of mature opacity by 24 hours. Calcium in the lens rapidly exchanges with labelled calcium in the incubation medium and. establishes equilibrium within 30 minutes. Selenite, accumulated in lens in vivo, causes a 5-6 fold increase in lens calcium over controls during a 24 hour incubation in modified Hank's medium at 37°C. In vitro lmM selenite in the culture medium results in a 15-fold increase in lens calcium, a 17-fold increase in sodium/potassium ratio, and a 60% increase in lens hydration. Efflux of calcium from in vivo and in vitro selenite-treated lens is not impaired. The lens retains the capability to transport 3-4 fold greater calcium over controls from lenses which have accumulated excess calcium in the presence of selenite. In vivo selenite treatment results in a 2.5-fold increase only of extracellular water. In in vitro selenite-treated lenses, however, there is a 2.6-fold increase in extracellular water and a 1.8-fold increase of intracellular water. Selenite treatment of the lenses in vivo and in vitro causes a greater influx of calcium into the lens. Calcium accumulation may act in a nonspecific manner altering lens biochemical functions, membranes and structure, causing development of relationships between selenite induced lens fiber opacities. cataract and cell the associated changes in lens calcium content further validates this model for studying the biochemical changes which impact cataract formation.Master of Scienc

    The Structure of the Polar Core Mutant R175E and Its Functional Implications

    Mutation of arginine 175 to glutamic acid (R175E), a central residue in the polar core and previously predicted as the ‘phosphosensor’, leads to a constitutively active arrestin that is able to terminate phototransduction by binding to non-phosphorylated, light-activated rhodopsin . Crystal structure of a R175E mutant arrestin at 2.7 Å resolution reveals significant differences compared to the basal state reported in full-length arrestin structures. Most striking differences are disruption of hydrogen bond network in the polar core , and three-element interaction (between β-strand I, α-helix I, and the C-tail), including disordering of several residues in the receptor-binding finger loop and the C-terminus (residues 361–404). Additionally, R175E structure shows a 7.5° rotation of the amino and carboxy-terminal domains relative to each other. Comparison of the crystal structures of basal arrestin and R175E mutant provides insights into the mechanism of arrestin activation, where the latter likely represents an intermediate activation state prior to formation of the high-affinity complex with the G protein-coupled receptor

    Professor Ravi Batra's research and reflection have lead him to believe that the world is headed, more or less inexorably, towards a major depression "of the same, if not greater, severity" than the one of the ninteen-thirties. He explains that he has written the book to warn people and he provides a set of investment and financial tips, so that the reader can avoid personal disaster in the "impending cataclysm". Batra's tone is light, pleasant but totally self-assured; he "fervently hopes that his prophecies turn out to be totally wrong" but he does not expect this outcome. One must accept that the book is a serious effort at scholarship and analysis and that Batra truly believes in his underlying model and the forecasts it produces. I stress this because there are many passages, even entire sections, in the book which, taken by themselves, might lead one to suspect that the book is a hoax and that the author is having fun at our expense. But, let us reject this possibility and attempt to deal seriously with this presumably serious book

    Effect of vitamin E supplementation on immune status and alpha -tocopherol in plasma of piglets

    From day 57 of pregnancy, 12 Yorkshire gilts were given a diet without and with 5% rapeseed oil, supplemented with Se 0.1 mg and DL- alpha -tocopherol (as tocopherol acetate) 22 IU/kg feed. Colostrum (day 0) and milk (days 7, 14, 21 and 28 post partum) were sampled from gilts. At farrowing, 3 piglets from each gilt of both groups were injected with alpha -tocopherol 500 IU at birth and 1000 IU at 7 and 14 days old; 3 piglets were injected with saline and used as controls. Blood samples were taken from the newborn piglets at birth and at 7, 14, 21, 28 and 35 days old. alpha -Tocopherol concentrations and antibody titres in colostrum were significantly higher than in the milk. Plasma alpha -tocopherol concentrations and antibody titres to Keyhole limpet haemocyanin of piglets injected with tocopherol were significantly higher than controls.
