GEOROC and Beyond: Digital Infrastructure for FAIR and Comparable Geochemical Big Data
A critical challenge in large-scale geochemistry is the harmonization of global, regional and local datasets, which often vary in analytical protocols, reporting standards, and metadata completeness. Establishing geochemical data and metadata standards as well as best practices and jointly used controlled vocabularies is essential to make such heterogeneous datasets comparable, allowing integration across country boundaries, spatial and temporal scales. The inclusion of detailed metadata (e.g., analytical methods, sample details) and the consistent use of reference materials are crucial for ensuring data quality, reproducibility, and meaningful comparison across studies. Without such measures, the potential of large geochemical datasets in Big Data and AI use-cases would remain limited.
The GEOROC and GeoReM databases are two of the most impactful data resources in the global geochemistry community. They are leading, open-access sources of geochemical and isotopic data that provide access to curated compilations of igneous and metamorphic rocks and mineral compositions as well as reference materials encompassing over 41 million individual data values. The data services support hundreds of new research publications each year across geoscience and related disciplines. To ensure that GEOROC and GeoReM remain sustainable and state-of-the-art resources, the Digital Geochemical Data Infrastructure (DIGIS) initiative is developing a modernized IT architecture and data infrastructure for the geochemical data on samples and reference materials. These efforts will enable improved data submission, discovery, and access while aligning with the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) principles.
In this context, DIGIS could act as both a reference framework and a partner for regional geological surveys, including those of the Nordic countries. Establishing shared geochemical metadata standards, vocabularies and workflows for data exchange would create a two-way benefit for the global geochemical research community and the Nordic survey community. By combining global and regional efforts in data collection, curation, and digital infrastructure, the community can move towards a truly interoperable ecosystem of geochemical Big Data beyond boundaries
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. Spectral X-ray computed tomography : potential and applications in geoscience
An accurate chemical characterization of a sample is often required in different scientific applications. This is often done by using two-dimensional analytical techniques. However, a major drawback of such methods is the loss of three-dimensional information, which is often necessary for a correct characterization of an object. Therefore, methods such as X-ray computed micro-tomography (micro-CT) are becoming more popular as they enable a high-resolution three-dimensional analysis of an object. Though, X-ray tomography is not able to provide any chemical information about a sample without any prior knowledge.
There have been different approaches to obtain chemical information using X-ray computed micro-tomography. This work shows a new and emerging technique called spectral X-ray computed micro-tomography (spectral-CT). This method is based on a semiconductor detector that is able to directly detect incoming X-rays and convert them into a digital output. Therefore, it is possible to analyze the X-ray spectrum, which contains a lot of different information about the measured sample based on the interaction between X-rays and the sample itself. By using the position of absorption edges in the X-ray spectrum it is possible to identify chemical elements within the spectral range of the detector (20 -160 keV).
In this work, the TESCAN PolyDet 1 was used for all measurements. It uses a CdTe crystal as a detection crystal, which offers a lot of advantages for the detection of high-energy X-rays due to its high atomic number. Therefore it is possible to identify elements with atomic numbers above 48 (Cd).
To show different applications and the potential of spectral-CT in geoscience different samples were analyzed. Numerous reference materials of pure elements were measured to test the performance and the limitations of the method. Moreover, different artificial mixtures of reference materials were used to simulate rock samples containing multiple phases. In addition two different application examples of spectral-CT in geosciences are presented in this work. In the first one different platinum group minerals (PGM) from the Norilsk 1 deposit in Russia are analyzed using spectral-CT. Different PGM could be identified and their three-dimensional distribution was analyzed by combining spectral-CT with high-resolution X-ray micro-CT. Moreover, the results were compared with two-dimensional analytical techniques such as scanning electron microscopy. In the second example, spectral-CT was used to analyze different ore minerals from the Witwatersrand basin in South Africa. The three-dimensional distribution of gold and different U-minerals was analyzed by combining spectral-CT with high-resolution X-ray micro-CT. Moreover, the results were compared with scanning electron microscopy.
All these examples show that spectral-CT is an evolving analytical technique, which offers a lot of advantages for the three-dimensional characterization of different materials

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
