Geochemical characteristic of the Lutetian black shale (Bayburt, NE-Turkey): amount, nature, origin of organic matter and palaeo-environment conditions
To define the amount, thermal maturity and type of organic matter (OM), a comprehensive analysis of major and trace elements, organic carbon isotope and organic geochemistry was conducted on Lutetian black shales found in the Everek (Bayburt) region of northeastern Turkey. Total organic carbon (TOC) levels in the shale samples range from 0.62% to 6.75%, and type II–III to type III kerogen is generated, displaying a combination of high terrigenous and low marine OM. The δ13C values (ranging from –28.22 to –28.23), aromatic hydrocarbon compounds (methyl phenanthrene, dibenzothiophene, tri-aromatic and monoaromatic steroids), saturated hydrocarbon compounds (sterane and terpane), acyclic isoprenoids, n-alkane distribution (n-C13–n-C36) and inorganic geochemical characterization support that the black shales were deposited in a terrestrial-marine transition environment and had a high proportion of terrestrial OM with small amounts of marine OM preserved in relatively arid to hot climate and oxic to suboxic conditions. The analysis of biomarker thermal maturity markers, Tmax (ranging from 449–458oC) and estimated vitrinite reflectance (varying from 0.92 to 1.08%) values suggest that the black shales have reached the oil window. As a result, black shales are thought to contain low to high amounts of TOC, have a mixed kerogen type, reach a high thermal maturity level and produce little hydrocarbons. © The Author(s), 2024
The potential toxic element contents of Berriasian–Aptian carbonate rocks: distribution of elements in dolomite and limestone and possible sources (Gümüşhane/NE Türkiye)
The aim of this study is to determine the potential toxic element (PTE) content linked to the geochemical features of Berriasian–Aptian carbonate rocks commonly outcropping in Gümüşhane, along with the degree of pollution and possible sources of these toxic elements, and to compare dolomite with limestone in terms of toxic metal abundance. In the field, dolomite and limestone samples were collected by measuring stratigraphic sections around Yuvacık, Ünlüpınar, Çukutbaşı, Bağlarbaşı, Mescitli and Gülaçar (Gümüşhane). The samples were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS). The mean values for Mo, Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, As, and Co were 3.1, 23.8, 7.1, 14.5, 13.5, 30.9, and 8 mg/kg in Yuvacık; 6, 2.3, 1.1, 3.5, 8.1, 12.3 and 2.5 mg/kg in Ünlüpınar; 17.9, 1.8, 1.5, 8.6, 7.9, 13.9 and 1.7 mg/kg in Çukutbaşı; 3.7, 6.5, 31.7, 82.7, 9.5, 32.0 and 1.9 mg/kg in Bağlarbaşı; 0.7, 0.7, 7.1, 21.3, 2.6, 11.8 and 0.7 mg/kg in Mescitli; and 1.2, 1.1, 2.4, 5.2, 1.3, 4.0 and 0.2 mg/kg in Gülaçar, respectively. According to geochemical pollution parameters [geo-accumulation (Igeo), pollution index (Pi), and pollution load index (Pln)], the rocks were generally significantly polluted by Mo and As, without notable pollution by the other elements. Limestone samples from the Yuvacık, Ünlüpınar, and Çukutbaşı areas were more polluted in terms of Mo and As compared to dolomites. This pollution in Yuvacık and Ünlüpınar was identified to have geogenic sources (Pb–Zn–Cu mineralization) and in Çukutbaşı was identified to have lithogenic sources. Dolomites from the Bağlarbaşı area were more polluted in terms of As and less polluted in terms of Mo compared to limestones. In the Mescitli location, both dolomites and limestones were occasionally polluted in terms of As, while limestones were polluted in terms of Mo. In these two areas, the sources of As and Mo are geogenic (Pb–Zn mineralization), In Gülaçar, dolomites were more polluted in terms of Mo and less polluted in terms of As compared to limestones. In this locality, As and Mo are thought to have a geogenic source (Pb–Zn–Cu mineralization). © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2024

Anahtar sözcükler: Coğrafi Bilgi Sistemleri, Heyelan Duyarlılık Haritası, Lojistik Regresyon, Orman Yolları, YığılcaThe Yığılca Forest Directorate is located in the Western Black Sea Region of Turkey, which has the highest occurrence of landslides in the country. The most important settlements in the 499-square-km study area are in Yığılca County of Düzce Province. Landslides are especially prevalent in areas near settlements and agricultural land. In addition, roads in the area trigger landslides and are generally affected by their occurrence. Thus, a landslide susceptibility map covering the study area has been generated based on the Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and evaluated in terms of forest roads. A landslide inventory based on susceptibility mapping was produced as a result of intensive fieldwork. In addition, a landslide inventory of the area created in 2005 by the MTA (Mineral Research and Exploration), scaled at 1/500000, was used for comparison. This inventory, generated through fieldwork, included 288 landslides.Eight parameters that have been observed in fieldwork as being effective for landslide occurrence were used for mapping landslide susceptibility. These are: land use, lithology, elevation, slope, aspect, distance to streams, distance to roads and plan curvature. Using these eight parameters, a landslide susceptibility map was created, as well as a digitized inventory map using the Logistic Regression (LR) method. For validation, the AUC (Area Under the Curve), which is the area under the ROC (Relative Operating Curve), was used to create the susceptibility map. The AUC value of the model was 0.905. The resulting map included five susceptibility classifications: very low susceptibility (0-0.2), low susceptibility (0.2-0.4), moderate susceptibility (0.4-0.6), high susceptibility (0.6-0.8) and very high susceptibility (0.8-1). According to these criteria, an area of 8439.9 ha was located in the very low-susceptibility class, an area of 20191.7 ha in the low-susceptibility class, an area of 14211.6 ha in the moderatesusceptibility class, an area of 6659.0 ha in the high-susceptibility class, and an area of 371.8 ha in the very high-susceptibility class. According to the road network plans, 931.9 km of roads, including forest roads, village roads and motorways, are to be found in the study area, 866.3 km of which have been constructed to date. An overlay analysis was made for evaluating these roads in terms of landslides. According to the results, of the roads in the network plan, 84.1 km were located over the very low-susceptibility areas, 413.5 km over the low-susceptibilityareas, 232.1 km over the moderate-susceptibility areas, 174.6 km over the highsusceptibility areas, and 22.7 km over the high-susceptibility areas. Of those roads which have not yet been constructed, 25.2 km are located over very low-susceptibility4class areas, 29.5 km over low-susceptibility areas, 9.9 km over moderate-susceptibility areas, and 1 km over high-susceptibility class areas. There are no planned roads over very high-susceptibility class areas. In the study area, real landslide frequency and general landslide frequency on the roads are 0.42 and 0.18, respectively. The real roadlandslide index and the general road-landslide index in the area are 0.10 and 0.04, respectively
The usage of modern remote sensing techniques in monitoring and mapping of landslide and snow related natural hazards

The present study examined the use of modern remote sensing techniques in landslide and snow/avalanche case applications within five study areas selected from three countries (i.e., Turkey, Austria and Switzerland). These selected modern remote sensing techniques included unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) systems, laser scanning systems (aerial and terrestrial), Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) interferometry (InSAR), and optical aerial photogrammetry. The landslide studies were carried out within two study areas in Turkey (Himmetoğlu and Devrek) and two in Austria (Gallenzerkogel and Gschliefgraben), while the snow/avalanche study was conducted in one study area in Switzerland (Dischma valley). Both UAV and aerial laser scanning data were used for landslide monitoring in the study areas located in Austria and the InSAR time series together with UAV and optical aerial photogrammetry were used for landslide monitoring in the study areas in Turkey. However, only UAV and terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) were used for monitoring snow depth mapping and snow cover ablation in the study area in Switzerland. For the monitoring of the Gschliefgraben landslide, only techniques for comparison of point clouds and the digital image correlation method were used via the available aerial laser scanning data. However, both UAV and laser scanning data were used to monitor the Gallenzerkogel landslide using both the Digital Elevation Model (DEM) of difference and the M3C2 algorithm, an advanced point cloud comparison method. A case study was carried out for monitoring snow cover ablation with UAV and TLS data obtained as a five-time series over the period of a month in Dischma valley (Davos, Switzerland). This case study is one of the first in which snow cover ablation was monitored using both UAV and TLS. For a long-term period (1992-2015), the surface deformation due to the Karşıyaka Road landslide (Devrek, Zonguldak) was monitored and mapped via persistent scatterers interferometry (PSI) analysis carried out using C-band SAR images from ERS-1/2, Envisat ASAR, and Sentinel-1 satellites. In addition to data from SAR satellites, the aerial photographs and UAV data were also used. Both PSI and small baseline subset (SBAS) analysis were carried out together with UAV data in order to obtain C-band SAR images of the surface deformation caused by the Himmetoğlu Village landslide (Göynük, Bolu) from the Sentinel-1 satellite. The usage possibilities of advanced remote sensing techniques in natural hazards were evaluated based on the findings of these case studies
The use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) for Tracking Stock Movements in Forest Enterprise Depots
In forestry applications in Turkey, forest enterprise depots (FEDs) are permanent main places where forest products such as logs and round timbers are stored and presented for sale to the market. The principal functions of FEDs are receiving, classifying, protecting, preparing the forest products for the sales and tracking the stock movements. According to Communiqué No 288 on the Production of Fundamental Forest Products published by General Directorate of Forestry in Turkey, it is obligatory to conduct stocktaking twice a year in FEDs for tracking and controlling the stock movements. The capabilities of using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in tracking stock movements in FEDs have not been extensively studied yet in the current literature. This study aimed to test UAVs in determining volume of round timber storages inside a FED named "Göl", located in Gölyaka District (Düzce, Turkey). A UAV flight was conducted and volume of round timber storage was calculated from point cloud, and compared to stock records for validation of UAV-based measurements. It was found that UAV-based volume measurements of the stock were quite compatible with available stock records. This study concluded that UAVs could be used in tracking stock movements in FEDs in an effective way
Future land use/land cover scenarios considering natural hazards using Dyna-CLUE in Uzungol Nature Conservation Area (Trabzon-NE Turkiye)
This study aimed to determine past and potential future temporal and spatial changes in land use/land cover (LULC) and to evaluate its interactions with natural hazards (especially snow avalanches and rockfalls) in Uzungol Nature Conservation Area (Trabzon-NE Turkiye). The objectives were (1) to assess past LULC change over the last 60 years (1955-2015), (2) to simulate future LULC with Dyna-CLUE by 2035 and 2050 considering two different scenarios, and (3) to evaluate interactions of past and future LULC change with natural hazards. The analysis of past LULC change showed that over the last 60 years settlement areas increased to 51.03 ha converting fully from agricultural areas. According to the future LULC simulations, scenario 1 showed that settlements will expand from 68 ha in 2015 to 97.5 ha in 2035, and up to 126.5 ha in 2050 towards areas that are exposed to snow avalanches. Scenario 2 showed that these settlement areas will increase to 119.75 ha in 2035 and 137.75 ha in 2050. In addition, according to scenario 1 settlements that are exposed to rockfall hazard will change from 28 ha in 2015 to 24 ha in 2035 and 28.25 ha in 2050, whereas according to scenario 2 these areas will change to 26.25 ha in 2035 and 28.75 ha in 2050. This study showed how LULC dramatically changed since 1955 due to population growth and changes in consumption patterns in society, and it further showed potential changes in the future. It was concluded that an obligatory increase in settlements towards dangerous areas will be observed in the future.Turkish Scientific and Technical Research Council -TUBITAK [117O929]This work was funded by the Turkish Scientific and Technical Research Council -TUBITAK (Project Number: 117O929)
Fuzzy rule-based landslide susceptibility mapping in Yığılca Forest District (Northwest of Turkey)
Landslide susceptibility map of Yığılca Forest District was formed based on developed fuzzy rules using GIS-based FuzzyCell software. An inventory of 315 landslides was updated through fieldworks after inventory map previously generated by the authors. Based on the landslide susceptibility mapping study previously made in the same area, for the comparison of two maps, same 8 landslide conditioning parameters were selected and then fuzzified for the landslide susceptibility mapping: land use, lithology, elevation, slope, aspect, distance to streams, distance to roads, and plan curvature. Mamdani model was selected as fuzzy inference system. After fuzzy rules definition, Center of Area (COA) was selected as defuzzification method in model. The output of developed model was normalized between 0 and 1, and then divided five classes such as very low, low, moderate, high, and very high. According to developed model based 8 conditioning parameters, landslide susceptibility in Yığılca Forest District varies between 32 and 67 (in range of 0-100) with 0.703 Area Under the Curve (AUC) value. According to classified landslide susceptibility map, in Yığılca Forest District, 32.89% of the total area has high and very high susceptibility while 29.59% of the area has low and very low susceptibility and the rest located in moderate susceptibility. The result of developed fuzzy rule based model compared with previously generated landslide map with logistic regression (LR). According to comparison of the results of two studies, higher differences exist in terms of AUC value and dispersion of susceptibility classes. This is because fuzzy rule based model completely depends on how parameters are classified and fuzzified and also depends on how truly the expert composed the rules. Even so, GIS-based fuzzy applications provide very valuable facilities for reasoning, which makes it possible to take into account inaccuracies and uncertainties
Forest mapping against rockfalls on a regional scale in Inebolu of Turkey
Determining areas where forest plantations provide protection against rockfall is significant in the prevention of disasters. In this paper, a case study is conducted in the Özlüce Forest District of İnebolu, Turkey. Potential rockfall source areas are firstly calculated and mapped via RollFree, which uses a digital elevation model as the only input. The rockfall travel distance is then identified using an empirical energy line angle to create propagation maps for different scenarios (using a set of four angles: 28°, 32°, 35°, and 38°). By marking the lower boundaries of propagation, the maximum run-out zone of a fallen block is determined as having a very low, low, medium, or high probability of occurrence (marking the lower boundaries of propagation). These propagation maps are then overlapped with a forest stand map to define areas where the forest provides a protective function against rockfall. According to propagation maps that indicate a high probability of occurrence, only 9% of the total forest area is found to be capable of playing a protective role, whereas for those determined as having a low probability of occurrence, 17% of the forest area provides a protective function
Günlük Sediment Yükünün Radyal Temelli Fonksiyon Sinir Ağları Kullanılarak Tahmin Edilmesi
In this study, daily suspended sediment amount were predicted from corresponding daily streamflow by using Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs). Radial Basis Functions (RBFs) were chosen as ANN method and two different learning algorithms were applied namely Quickprop (QP) and Delta-bar-Delta (DBD) with two different transfer functions called linear tangent hyperbolic axon (litanhaxon) and tangent hyperbolic axon (tanhaxon). Prediction was made by using flow and suspended sediment data of Ispir gauging station on Çoruh River, Turkey between 1991 and 1999. The data, 106 in total, were used as calibration/training and validation/testing sets for the chosen RBF neural network architecture. Of the data obtained 76 measurements (72%) were reserved for the calibration and the remaining data were used for validation. All developed RBF networks have one hidden layer (HL) and one process element (PE) or neuron. Mean Absolute Error (MAE) and coefficient of correlation (R) were used as performance criteria. According to MAE performance criteria of developed networks, DBD learning algorithm with litanhaxon (MAE=0.052) gave best results and following QP learning algorithm with litanhaxon (MAE=0.054), DBD learning algorithm with tanhaxon (MAE=0.056), QP learning algorithm with tanhaxon (MAE=0.057), respectively. According to R performance criteria, DBD learning algorithm with tanhaxon gave best results (R = 0.963) and following QP learning algorithm with tanhaxon (R=0.961), QP learning algorithm with litanhaxon (R=0.955), DBD learning algorithm with litanhaxon (R=0.945), respectively. This study showed that RBF Networks provide satisfactory results in engineering applications for prediction of suspended sediment amount from corresponding daily streamflow by using ANN.Bu çalışmada, Yapay Sinir Ağları (ANNs) kullanılarak günlük akarsu akış miktarına karşılık gelen günlük askıda sediment miktarları tahmin edilmiştir.
