Common Variable Immunodeficiency in Miniature Dachshunds Affected with Pneumonocystis Carinii Pneumonia

No full text
Seven miniature dachshunds, all under the age of 1 year, were presented with polypnea, tachypnea, and exercise intolerance as a result of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, which was diagnosed on transtracheal aspirate cytology. In all of the dogs, historical and clinical signs were suggestive of immune incompetence. Immunological studies undertaken were leukogram parameters, serum immunoglobulin fraction quantification, lymphocyte transformation assay. CD3 and CD79a lymphocyte markers on lymphoid tissue, and anti-canine immunoglobulin G immunoperoxidase staining. The immunological studies showed hypogammaglobulinemia, deficiency of serum immunoglobulins A, G, and M, decreased lymphocyte transformation response to phytohemagglutinin and pokeweed mitogens and absence of B lymphocytes with presence of T lymphocytes in the lymphoid tissue stained with CD3 and CD79a lymphocyte markers. The preceding findings suggest that P. carinii pneumonia occurring in the miniature dachshund is a result of both a T- and B-cell deficiency. This presentation is not the classic primary severe combined immunodeficiency syndrome but rather combined variable immunodeficiency, which has been well documented in humans but never in the dog. </jats:p

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Diabetes mellitus

Diabetes mellitus is a common endocrinopathy in dogs and cats. The disease is suspected if clinical signs such as polyuria, polydipsia, polyphagia, and weight loss are present. Hyperglycemia, glycosuria, and an elevated serum fructosamine will confirm the diagnosis. Cornerstones of treatment are insulin that is typically administered subcutaneously twice daily and a low-carbohydrate diet. Objectives of treatment are resolution of clinical signs, control of body weight, and prevention of diabetic complications and episodes of hypoglycemia. Furthermore, in any cat and in bitches with diabetes mellitus associated with diestrus or pregnancy, treatment should also aim at remission. This favorable outcome is frequent in cats but is rare in dogs. Prognosis of affected dogs and cats is fair and quality of life is good if treatment it adequately provided
