Breakfast Skipping, Atherosclerosis Disease, and Free Fatty Acids
The proposed physiological mechanism also
explains why LEB poses a lower risk than skipping breakfast. In fact, LEB reduces the level of FFAs by only a small amount, thus only slightly alleviating the critical conditions for the formation of FFA vesicle
Global Warming perspectives and new solutions- Editorial
The Editorial of The Special Issue of The International Journal of Global Warming, "Global Warming perspectives and new solutions
Special Issue “Sustainable Energy Sources and Developing Clean Energy Technologies”
Energy and sustainability are issues in the global agenda. The concern for the impacts
of energy use, which adds to the alarm for the scarcity of primary sources of energy, has triggered new research on sustainable primary energy sources and on c1ean and efficient energy systems and processes. Due to the current global warming, the link between energy and environment became inescapable in such a way that researchers have to deal both with efficiency and environmental impacts. In the last few years, forums worldwide have addressed these global issues from different perspectives.
This Special issue of the International Journal of Green Energy inc1udes selected
papers devoted mainly to sustainable energy sources and developing c1ean energy technologies.
The guest editors are grateful to the authors who contributed to this special issue and

“Recent Advances in Energy Research”
The worldwide scarcity of fossil fuels regarding primary energy demand together with growing environmental concerns have raised new challenges to the world economy, and led to changes in the energy paradigm. Industry, services, researchers, and the Academy are challenged to envisage new solutions through setting up new conversion processes, designing new power systems, and investigating and developing new energy sources and vectors
and Development, from the Individual Researcher to research Empires
This paper is dated: it was written at the time of the celebration of the 20 years of activity of the Évora Geophysics Centre (CGE). It comprises a brief appraisal of the evolution of scientific research in Europe and in the United States of America, together with a special reference to the development of the Portuguese scientific system. The size distribution of scientific teams in the whole system is addressed, and it is shown that at a state of optimal performance there is room for all team sizes ranging from the individual investigator to research empires. Similarly, we note that research dynamics evolve in time with periods of strong creation intensity that alternate with periods of extension and quiescence. We also note that the new perspectives for the European Research Area, with policies that push strongly to the development side, may be risky in the long term as they might lessen creation, which is the base for sustainability and development. Finally, we briefly address the challenges ahead both for the Portuguese scientific system and the CGE
The early compositions for cello and piano by Heitor Villa-Lobos
This study presents a historical overview of Heitor Villa-Lobos’s early life, career, surrounding environment, influences, selected early compositions for cello and piano written between 1913 and 1917, autographs, and of Rio de Janeiro from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In the study of Villa-Lobos’s early life and Rio de Janeiro from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it is important to consider the influences of Europe, especially France on Brazil, and European composers on Heitor Villa-Lobos. This study provides historical information, and attempts to increase the dissemination of Villa-Lobos’s early compositions for cello and piano into the standard cello repertoire. The study also presents information to help cellists understand and then incorporate these pieces into their repertoire, followed by a recording of selected Villa-Lobos’s early compositions for cello and piano performed by this author. More pertinent materials are given in the appendixes, such as historical information about the other compositions for cello and piano written between 1913 and 1917 (Appendix A), and a complete list of compositions for and with cello by Heitor Villa-Lobos (Appendix B). The findings of this study show that Villa-Lobos’s early compositions for cello and piano show a complete absence of elements of Brazilian folklore, were highly influenced by the aesthetics of European composers in vogue at the time in Brazil, and were written while the composer was active as a cellist As shown in the Conclusion, after careful analysis, it can be inferred that Villa-Lobos’s early compositions for cello and piano deserve to be known, incorporated into the repertoire of modern cellists, and performed more frequently
Exchange rates of the mil-reis (1795-1913)
Three nominal exchange rate series are presented, for the mil-reis and the dollar in relation to sterling, and for the mil-reis in relation to the dollar. For each of these, two series are constructed: current rates and long-term rates, representing the secular tendency of these exchange rates. The main out-of-trend fluctuations of the mil-reis and the dollar are discussed, as well as the advantage of analyzing fluctuations and trend together. The text includes tables showing rates for all 6 series.Brazil; exchange rates; mil-reis; dollar; sterling
