Embedding arithmetic hyperbolic manifolds
We prove that any arithmetic hyperbolic n-manifold of simplest
type can either be geodesically embedded into an arithmetic hyper-
bolic (n + 1)-manifold or its universal mod 2 Abelian cover can
Commensurability of Fuchsian groups and their axes
The purpose of this note is to prove the following Theorem. This answers a question raised during the problem session at the Special Session on Geometric Function Theory of the 898th meeting of the AMS in Hartford, CT, the weekend of the fourth of March, 1995, and is related to a question in Mess on whether equality of axis sets for Fuchsian groups implies commensurability
The EU dimension to the Scottish legal system
This chapter is concerned with the impact membership of the European Union has had upon the Scottish legal system. The chapter discusses the development of the original European Community from the original membership of 6 Member States through to its present membership of 28 in the expanded guise of the European Union. The chapter then discusses the sources of EU law before going on to outline the powers and roles of the various EU institutions. Finally, the chapter discusses the relationship between EU law and national law and the key role played by the Court of Justice of the European Union in this relationship
Reimagining creativity: Critically, ethically, and practically
True creativity sits in stark contrast with global trends to standardise education systems. It is, though, an attractive semantic and conjures up all sorts of positives. However none of the positive potentials of the creativity push are likely to materialise while process-oriented bureaucratic understandings of creativity dominate curriculum policy and development. Creativity requires pedagogy to forego substantial levels of control. It also requires ethical content because creative is an empty epithet, applying equally to the creation of beautiful music as it does to the creation of a nuclear weapon. In responding to Kapitzke and Hay, this chapter outlines the stark contradictions embedded in the creativity push. © 2014 Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
