    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Beitrag zur Beschreibung des mechanischen Materialverhaltens von Metall-Faser-Hybrid-Verbund-Werkstoffen am Beispiel von stahl- und kohlenstofffaserverstärktem Epoxidharz

    Trotz überlegenen gewichtsspezifischen mechanischen Eigenschaften von klassi-schen, endlosfaserverstärkten Faser-Kunststoff-Verbunden (FKV), sind oftmals das spröde Versagensverhalten unter Zug- und Biegebeanspruchungen sowie die daraus resultierende geringe Schadenstoleranz und Strukturintegrität ein Ausschlusskriterium für diese Werkstoffe. Weitere anwendungsbezogene Ausschlusskriterien folgen aus der, verglichen mit metallischen Leichtbauwerkstoffen, eher als gering einzustufenden elektrischen Leitfähigkeit. Eine vielversprechende Möglichkeit, um diesen Nachteilen entgegen zu wirken besteht in der Hybridisierung von duktilen metallischen Verstär-kungsfasern und klassischen Verstärkungsfasern. Damit können elektrische und ther-misch leitfähige Hybridwerkstoffe erzeugt werden, die neben sehr guten gewichtsspe-zifischen mechanischen Eigenschaften eine signifikante Verbesserung der Scha-denstoleranz und der Crashperformance ermöglichen. In Abhängigkeit der Werkstoff-zusammensetzung, der Laminatarchitektur und der angewandten Hybridisierungsstra-tegie, bieten die eingebetteten Metallfasern aufgrund ihrer hohen Bruchdehnung alter-native Lastpfade und ermöglichen so die Lastaufnahme auch nach dem Versagen der klassischen Verstärkungsfasern. Während das Potenzial dieser Hybridwerkstoffe be-reits für verschiedenste Werkstoffkombinationen bewiesen wurde, konzentriert sich die vorliegende Arbeit darauf, die verschiedenen Wirkmechanismen des Materialverhal-tens von metallisch hybridisierten FKV vor, nach und während des Versagens zu ver-stehen und verschiedene Beschreibungsansätze und -modelle dafür zu entwickeln. Am Beispiel von stahl- und kohlenstofffaserverstärktem Epoxidharz (SCFK) wird hierzu eine umfangreiche experimentelle Untersuchung vorgestellt. Dabei wird gezeigt, dass das Versagen der Kohlenstofffasern einen komplexen Lastumlagerungsprozess aus-löst und dass das Materialverhalten nach dem Versagen der Kohlenstoffasern im We-sentlichen von den dabei entstehenden lokalen Schädigungen und Beanspruchungen abhängt. Ferner kann gezeigt werden, wie diese Schädigungen und Beanspruchungen durch die Zusammensetzung des Werkstoffes, die Laminatarchitektur oder die Prüf-körpergeometrie beeinflusst werden können. Darauf aufbauend wird ein neuartiges Werkstoffmodell vorgestellt, mit dem der komplexe Lastumlagerungsprozess nach dem Versagen der Kohlenstoffasern abgebildet werden kann und mit dem eine schnelle Abschätzung der Materialeigenschaften möglich ist. Darüber hinaus wird ein Materialmodell zur Abbildung des Materialverhaltens von stahlfaserverstärkten Kunst-stoffen (SFK) für den Solver LSDyna implementiert und in Kombination mit einem Ma-terialmodell für kohlenstofffaserverstärkte Kunststoffe (CFK) für die Beschreibung von auf Laminatebene hybridisiertem SCFK mit der FEM verwendet. Abschließend wird sowohl für das Modell des Lastumlagerungsprozesses als auch für die Beschreibung von SCFK mit der FEM eine detaillierte Analyse der Vorhersageeignung vorgestellt.Despite the superior weight-specific mechanical properties of conventional continuous fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP), the brittle failure behavior under tensile and bending loads and the resulting low damage tolerance and structural integrity are often an ex-clusion criterion for these materials. Further application-related exclusion criteria follow from the rather low electrical conductivity compared to metallic lightweight materials. A promising approach to overcome these disadvantages is the hybridization of ductile metallic reinforcing fibers and conventional reinforcing fibers. This hybridization offers electrically and thermally conductive hybrid materials that retain their very good weight-specific mechanical properties while simultaneous enable a significant improvement in damage tolerance and crash behavior. Depending on the material composition, the laminate architecture and the hybridization strategy, the embedded metal fibers offer alternative load paths due to their high elongation at break and enable further load bearing capacity even after the failure of the conventional reinforcing fibers. While the potential of these hybrid materials has already been proven for a wide variety of mate-rial combinations, this work concentrates on understanding and describing the various mechanisms of material behavior before, after and during the failure of the hybrid ma-terial. Based on an extensive experimental investigation on steel and carbon fiber re-inforced epoxy resin, it can be shown that the failure of the carbon fibers triggers a complex load redistribution process. The material behavior after the failure of the car-bon fibers strongly depends on the local damage and stresses that arises during this process. Furthermore, it can be shown how this damage and stresses can be influ-enced by manipulating the laminate stacking sequence, the composition of the mate-rial, the laminate architecture or the geometry of the test specimen. Based on this in-vestigation, a model is presented which is capable to map the complex load redistribu-tion process after the failure of the carbon fibers and which enables a predictive esti-mation of the material behavior. In addition, a material model for steel fiber reinforced plastics (SFRP) is implemented for LSDyna©. Combined with a material model for car-bon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP), the SFRP-model is used for the description of hybrid laminate layups, consisting of SFRP and CFRP layers, within in the FEM. Fi-nally, a detailed analysis regarding the prediction suitability for the model of the load redistribution process as well as for the description of SCFK within the FEM is pre-sented

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
