Collages and photomontages in architectural representation. The photographic works of Teófilo Rego
Graphically manipulated photographs were frequently used to illustrate the impact of the projected building on the existing cityscape or landscape, in particular, in those cases, where the projects had a monumental scale. We discouvered two sorts of documents at Teófilo Rego Archive: on the one hand, the collages and photomontages made by architects and photographed by Teófilo Rego; on the other hand, collages and photomontages made by Teófilo Rego at the commission of architects, a work whose depth seems to indicate the collaboration, a free, curious and imaginative spirit of research and the deepening of the formal and expressive hypothesis proportionated by the commission. In the second group are included the photographs of four projects of the International Competition for the monument to the Infante D. Henrique in Sagres, 1954/1957. The photomontages and collages contained in the specification and in the draft’s process submitted by João Andresen, and the photomontages of the projects by Nadir Afonso and Manuel da Silva Passos Junior must have been a form of project impact statement from their authors, and certainly represent a period of great creativity as concerns Teófilo Rego. All photomontages by Teófilo Rego are constructed images, the result of a rational being, but are also emotional. As his gaze approaches the models, the images become abstract, and deviate from a possible illusion of reality. Whereas the compositions on the territory and the monument demanded a certain expressive naturalism more than realism, it is the geometric abstraction of architectural form that prevails in the close-ups.This text was co-funded with FEDER funds by the Operational Competitiveness Programme – COMPETE and national funds by FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e

Jet-installation noise and near-field characteristics of jet-surface interaction
The link between jet-installation noise and the near-field flow features of the corresponding isolated jet is studied by means of lattice-Boltzmann numerical simulations. The computational set-up consists of a flat plate placed in proximity to a jet, replicating the interaction benchmark study carried out at NASA Glenn. Installation effects cause low-frequency noise increase with respect to the isolated case, mainly occurring in the direction normal to the plate and upstream of the jet's exit plane. It is shown that the Helmholtz number, based on the wavelength of eddies in the mixing layer and their distance to the plate trailing edge, predicts the frequency range where installation noise occurs. Based on the isolated jet near field, scaling laws are also found for the far-field noise produced by different plate geometries. The linear hydrodynamic field of the isolated jet shows an exponential decay of pressure fluctuations in the radial direction; it is shown that the far-field spectrum follows the same trend when moving the plate in this direction. In the axial direction, spectral proper orthogonal decomposition is applied to filter out jet acoustic waves. The resultant hydrodynamic pressure fluctuations display a wavepacket behaviour, which can be fitted with a Gaussian envelope. It is found that installation noise for different plate lengths is proportional to the amplitude of the Gaussian curve at the position of the plate trailing edge. These analyses show that trends of jet-installation noise can be predicted by analysing the near field of the isolated case, reducing the need for extensive parametric investigations.Wind Energ
Free-Stream Effects on Jet-Installation Noise of a Dual-Stream Engine
An investigation of the effects of free-stream on jet-installation noise is performed using a numerical solver based on the lattice-Boltzmann method. In order to simulate a realistic configuration, a high-lift wing comprised by a main element and a deployed flap (MD30P30N) is placed in the vicinity of a dual-stream engine (GE90-94B). The engine operating parameters are used as inputs to generate realistic exhaust flows. Far-field noise spectra from the isolated and installed jets, obtained through the Ffowcs-Williams and Hawkings analogy, are compared for different polar angles. In the absence of free-stream, the results show a low-frequency noise amplification, occurring mainly upstream of the jet axis. This noise increase is due to a dipole source at the flap trailing-edge, where hydrodynamic waves from the jet scatter as sound to the far-field. With free-stream, the wing produces a downward flow, which deflects the jet plume. There is a consequent change on the shear layer turbulence characteristics, which is responsible for altering the far-field spectral shape and directivity pattern of the overall configuration. Through a wavelet decomposition of the near-pressure field, coherent and chaotic fluctuations are splitted. Near-field spectra show the change in amplitude of fluctuations of coherent structures due to free-stream, which are in agreement with the farfield results.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Wind Energ

Natural history. Centroctenus varzea sp. n. is one of the most abundant spiders in the flooded forests (várzea) of the Amazon River (Rego et al. 2009). Eighty-nine specimens were collected in samples scattered approximately 3,000 km along the river, at both margins and at the end of the flood season (from September to early November/2003). C. varzea sp. n. is a nocturnal wandering spider, found foraging at the leaf litter near rivers, lakes and streams. Few specimens were collected at night on beaches and ravines, and three individuals (less than 4% of the total) were caught during the daylight on shrubs and bare soil in non-flooded forest (terra-firme). The high abundance of juveniles and adults even in wet soil after flooding suggests that C. varzea sp. n. returns to flooded forests as the water descends into the Amazon River and its tributaries. Distribution. North of Brazil in the Amazon River basin (Fig. 12C).Published as part of Brescovit, Antonio D., Torres, Richard A., Rego, Felipe N. A. Applications of the Multilayer Porous Medium Modeling Approach for Noise Mitigation
Porous materials have been widely investigated as a mean for noise reduction. Numerical simulations can be used to investigate the physical mechanisms responsible for noise reduction; however, a correct modeling of the porous medium through an equivalent fluid model is essential to minimize the computational costs. This paper reports a detailed review of a few applications of the equivalent fluid model based on a three-layer approach, a method that is particularly useful to account for the variation of porous material thickness in aerospace applications. The multilayer approach has been applied in three relevant aerodynamic noise issues: leading-edge impingement noise, turbulent boundary-layer trailing-edge noise, and jet installation noise. Comparison with experiments is used to validate the simulation approach. MeSH term explosion and author rank improve expert recommendations
Information overload is an often-cited phenomenon that reduces the productivity, efficiency and efficacy of scientists. One challenge for scientists is to find appropriate collaborators in their research. The literature describes various solutions to the problem of expertise location, but most current approaches do not appear to be very suitable for expert recommendations in biomedical research. In this study, we present the development and initial evaluation of a vector space model-based algorithm to calculate researcher similarity using four inputs: 1) MeSH terms of publications; 2) MeSH terms and author rank; 3) exploded MeSH terms; and 4) exploded MeSH terms and author rank. We developed and evaluated the algorithm using a data set of 17,525 authors and their 22,542 papers. On average, our algorithms correctly predicted 2.5 of the top 5/10 coauthors of individual scientists. Exploded MeSH and author rank outperformed all other algorithms in accuracy, followed closely by MeSH and author rank. Our results show that the accuracy of MeSH term-based matching can be enhanced with other metadata such as author rank
Jose Lins do Rego - from learner to writer: the didactic communication as edition phenomena
Discuto assim,
o fazer do livro, a relação editor autor.
encontrei a Cartilha Literária José Lins do Rego.
Ferreira, Paul Zumthor, Maurice Halbwachs e Iuri Lotman. Para trabalhar com a
narrativa e os diferentes gêneros do discurso, utilizei Mikhail Bakhtin e os trabalhos
F. Bittencourt e Roger
ChartierThe study consists in the analysis of the learning course of the author José Lins
do Rego, from the moment of his first contact with literature to making himself a
writer, turning [himself] into an edition phenomenon. Hence I analyzed the
different reading practices registered by the author, comprehending, at first, the
reading of what I denominated lived texts, that is, the remembrance of listening
the speeches and oral literature heard by José Lins do Rego in his childhood. I
analyze, here, the intrinsic relationship among the orally poetics, memory and
writing. In second, I examined the reading of the written verbal registered by the
author, in Doidinho. The narrator remembers the utilization he made of the
school manuals (highlight to Livros de Leitura by Felisberto Rodrigues Pereira de
Carvalho and Cuore by Edmond D Amici) and of other texts as the Carlos
Magno and the 12 pairs from French at the time he attended the INSC in
Itabaiana. I investigated the diverse uses and the different interpretations of the
school - manual as a disseminator of political projects and of the users and those
surrounding them lifestyles constituting ideologies. Those readings, as the
listening pointed by the narrator, establish the place of the memory. I also aim at
accompany the voice in the writing, that is, I seek by that the memory place that
became writing: it s the turning itself into writer of José Lins do Rego.
Investigating in the same direction I bring the production of José Lins do Rego in
multiple media. I therefore discuss the making of the book, the relationship editor
- author. To finish, I return to the school universe to investigate the author s text
being applied in school, and as example I found the Cartilha Literária José Lins
do Rego. As theoretical underpinning to the discussion about memory, writing
and orally I have called forth to authors as Jerusa Pires Ferreira, Paul Zumthor,
Maurice Halbwachs e Iuri Lotman. To deal with the narrative and the different
genres of discourse, I made use of Mikhail Bakhtin and the works of Jacques
Migozzi, Jean-Yves Mollier, and Jean-Claude Vareille. And, to study the author -
editor relationship, I employed authors as Circe M. F. Bittencourt e Roger
