On the Evolution of the Public and the Private in the Genre Structure of Comic Drama: Plautus’ Plot in the Plays by J.F. Regnard and H. Fielding

    No full text
The article focuses on the transformations of the plot of Mostellaria (or The Haunted House) by Plautus in the plays by J.F. Regnard (Le Retour Imprévu or The Unexpected Return) and H. Fielding (The Intriguing Chambermaid). The article gives special attention to the relations between public and private spheres as they are represented in those works’ dramaturgy. Pointing out the ambiguity of the comedic genre in respect of the interpretation of the public and the private, the author examines the collisions between the two spheres tracing their manifestations on the levels of plot, dramatic action and the relations of characters of the plays under discussion. In The Haunted House the controversy is solved on the ground of genre memory preserving its ritual roots and reviving the purifying effect of putting private relations and individual vices on public display. In the works of Regnard, who writes in the situation of more complex private life, a comic effect comes from the violation of privacy and from the discrepancy between inner cynicism and formal propriety of personages. Lessening the strain of formal symmetry, characteristic of the classical structure of Regnard’s play, H. Fielding represents the violation of privacy as a kind of “familiar” chaos (typical of modern life). This tendency is counterbalanced by the ideal of defending and harmonizing private sphere which is meant to serve the foundation of the public good

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Beatty, J.F., and the Law of Manslaughter

    No full text
In this article, the author argues that the recent Supreme Court of Canada decisions in R. v. Beatty and R. v. J.F. have clarified several of the issues that have plagued the increasingly complicated offence of manslaughter. In particular, the decisions address the redundancy among the many manslaughter provisions in the Criminal Code, the need to define a clear separation between actus reus and mens rea, and the need to establish distinct categories of objective fault for different types of manslaughter offences. The author examines the legal background of these decisions as well as the current state of the law. He concludes by identifying emerging issues relating to the offence of manslaughter, arguing that the law remains convoluted and in need of urgent reform despite the progress made in the Beatty and J.F. decisions

Immediate and long-term results after surgical treatment of primary spontaneous pneumothorax by VATS

BACKGROUND: Video-assisted thoracic surgery has recently evolved as a viable alternative to thoracotomy for spontaneous pneumothorax. METHODS: A series of 163 patients with primary spontaneous pneumothorax were treated by video-assisted thoracic surgery. Seventy patients were treated for a recurrent episode, 64 patients for a persistent primary spontaneous pneumothorax, 24 patients for a contralateral episode, and 5 patients for a bilateral primary spontaneous pneumothorax. Stapling of bullae with an Endo-GIA stapler (Auto-Suture, Elencourt, France) was performed in 90% of the cases and parietal pleural abrasion was performed in each case. RESULTS: One revisional lateral limited thoracotomy was required for bleeding. Six patients had a prolonged air leak; 2 of them were reoperated on by lateral limited thoracotomy. Two patients have had an incomplete reexpansion of the lung and required a reoperation. The duration of hospitalization was 6.9 +/- 3 days. With a mean follow-up of 24.5 months, three recurrences requiring a reoperation occurred; 3 other patients had a partial recurrence and healed by rest without drainage. The mean time to return to the occupational activity of the patients was 42 +/- 34 days. These results were compared with those of a previous series of 87 patients operated on by lateral limited thoracotomy. CONCLUSIONS: With the development of surgical technique and video equipment, video-assisted thoracic surgery will probably become the treatment of choice of primary spontaneous pneumothorax
