    Stream Runtime Monitoring on UAS

    Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) with autonomous decision-making capabilities are of increasing interest for a wide area of applications such as logistics and disaster recovery. In order to ensure the correct behavior of the system and to recognize hazardous situations or system faults, we applied stream runtime monitoring techniques within the DLR ARTIS (Autonomous Research Testbed for Intelligent System) family of unmanned aircraft. We present our experience from specification elicitation, instrumentation, offline log-file analysis, and online monitoring on the flight computer on a test rig. The debugging and health management support through stream runtime monitoring techniques have proven highly beneficial for system design and development. At the same time, the project has identified usability improvements to the specification language, and has influenced the design of the language

The aim of the SC-Square initiative is to strengthen the connection between these communities by creating common platforms, initiating interaction and exchange, identifying common challenges, and developing a common roadmap from theory along the way to tools and (industrial) applications

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Semantic Forgetting in Expressive Description Logics

    Forgetting is an important ontology extraction technology. We present a semantic forgetting method for ALC ontologies. The method forgets concept names, and captures the semantic content over the remaining vocabulary of an ontology, possibly, by introducing helper concept symbols. In an evaluation, the method performed well on large-scale ontologies when forgetting 10–50% of the vocabulary and the number of helper symbols occurring in the extracts decreased as the number of forgetting symbols increased. Against the forgetting tool Fame(Q), good performance was achieved while more semantic content was preserved.</p

    TeLEx: Passive STL Learning Using Only Positive Examples

    We propose a novel passive learning approach, TeLEx, to infer signal temporal logic formulas that characterize the behavior of a dynamical system using only observed signal traces of the system. The approach requires two inputs: a set of observed traces and a template Signal Temporal Logic (STL) formula. The unknown parameters in the template can include time-bounds of the temporal operators, as well as the thresholds in the inequality predicates. TeLEx finds the value of the unknown parameters such that the synthesized STL property is satisfied by all the provided traces and it is tight. This requirement of tightness is essential to generating interesting properties when only positive examples are provided and there is no option to actively query the dynamical system to discover the boundaries of legal behavior. We propose a novel quantitative semantics for satisfaction of STL properties which enables TeLEx to learn tight STL properties without multidimensional optimization. The proposed new metric is also smooth. This is critical to enable use of gradient-based numerical optimization engines and it produces a 30 × –100 × speed-up with respect to the state-of-art gradient-free optimization.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Combining Model Checking and Runtime Verification for Safe Robotics

    A major challenge towards large scale deployment of autonomous mobile robots is to program them with formal guarantees and high assurance of correct operation. To this end, we present a framework for building safe robots. Our approach for validating the end-to-end correctness of robotics system consists of two parts: (1) a high-level programming language for implementing and systematically testing the reactive robotics software via model checking; (2) a signal temporal logic (STL) based online monitoring system to ensure that the assumptions about the low-level controllers (discrete models) used during model checking hold at runtime. Combining model checking with runtime verification helps us bridge the gap between software verification (discrete) that makes assumptions about the low-level controllers and the physical world, and the actual execution of the software on a real robotic platform in the physical world. To demonstrate the efficacy of our approach, we build a safe adaptive surveillance system and present software-in-the-loop simulations of the application
