Settlement fictions: global south literature and the postcolonial urban imaginary
No full textThis dissertation traces the emergence of overlooked articulations of the megacity in contemporary postcolonial novels. Representations of non-Western cities and informal settlements or “slums” in global popular culture and Anglophone urban commentary enact a series of elisions -- making poor women and their economic and social activities invisible, allowing the volatile space of the street to stand in for all noteworthy space, and ignoring the progressive energies of slum-based social movements by equating them with religious extremism and other radicalisms. Postcolonial novelists, this dissertation argues, challenge these elisions by crafting what I term settlement fictions: narratives that foreground the unforeseen intra-community relationships, hidden spaces of work and laboring solidarities, and flexible approaches to spatial politics engendered by impoverished megacity life. Analyzing urban images of the Global South in film, journalism, visual culture, and literature, I suggest that contemporary African, Indian, and Caribbean writers, including Chris Abani, Zakes Mda, Rohinton Mistry, and Patrick Chamoiseau, loosen the bonds that have heretofore tightly associated the imagined megacity with the fate of postcolonial nations embedded in a global system of exploitative capitalism. While recognizing the importance of both neoliberalism and colonialism in shaping modern urbanization, the writers I discuss push critics to see non-Western megacities equally as incubators of original urban social practices. My work draws upon theories of everyday practice, transnational governance, the gendering of postmodern labor, and micro-politics to clarify the local, regional, and global significance of these practices.Ph. How might we draw from the writings of Vygotsky and Leontiev with regard to understanding the process of children and young people’s development as socialized intellectual beings? This article applies cultural-historical theory to classroom activity in order to reveal the potential for dynamic change in subjectivity, agency, cooperation and collaboration. After a detailed theoretical contextualization which links primary sources and the cultural-historical tradition to learning and development through classroom activity, an incident in a lesson is discussed and situated in its wider narrative of practical experimentation, diagnosis and implementation
The logic of the violence in the civil war: the armed conflict in Colombia
No full textThis paper proposes a reading of the armed conflict from an evolutionary design that takes into account the Logic of Violence in the Civil War. Their aim is to assess the dynamics of conflict and changes from its author's scientific output. A context of conflicts that includes new expressions of violence and the relative failure of the paramilitary reintegration involves using new analytical models (argumentation, game theory and inconsistent information). The recent evolution of emerging gangs and their expansion into areas that were paramilitary camps requires monitoring not only of the government and the authorities, but those investigating the conflict in the present tense. The author provides heuristic research support from Schelling’s theory of strategy, Nozick’s agencies and the protection, and Gambetta’s recent contributions to the relationship between organized crime and drug cartels.Civil_war, Colombia, armed conflict, strategic_theory, Gambetta, Nozick, Schelling

Maximum likelihood continuity mapping for fraud detection
No full textThe author describes a novel time-series analysis technique called maximum likelihood continuity mapping (MALCOM), and focuses on one application of MALCOM: detecting fraud in medical insurance claims. Given a training data set composed of typical sequences, MALCOM creates a stochastic model of sequence generation, called a continuity map (CM). A CM maximizes the probability of sequences in the training set given the model constraints, CMs can be used to estimate the likelihood of sequences not found in the training set, enabling anomaly detection and sequence prediction--important aspects of data mining. Since MALCOM can be used on sequences of categorical data (e.g., sequences of words) as well as real valued data, MALCOM is also a potential replacement for database search tools such as N-gram analysis. In a recent experiment, MALCOM was used to evaluate the likelihood of patient medical histories, where ``medical history`` is used to mean the sequence of medical procedures performed on a patient. Physicians whose patients had anomalous medical histories (according to MALCOM) were evaluated for fraud by an independent agency. Of the small sample (12 physicians) that has been evaluated, 92% have been determined fraudulent or abusive. Despite the small sample, these results are encouraging
Photoelectric detection of shadow bands
No full textFaint light and dark bands that are seen moving across the face of the earth just before and after the total phase of a solar eclipse are commonly called shadow bands. In anticipation of detecting these bands at an eclipse, the author constructed equipment which can detect very small light variations that are continuously present in sunlight and thus felt to be certainly sensitive enough to detect shadow bands.The equipment consists of a seven channel recorder used for spectral dependence of light variations and an eight channel power spectrum analyzer which displays the dominant scintillation frequencies present.The equipment was taken to the 10 July 1972 eclipse in Nova Scotia where the equipment detected light variations even though shadow bands were not as visible as previously observed. The dominant frequency on both types of equipment was around 6 Hz.Thesis (M.S.
Diffraction patterns produced by a total solar eclipse as a possible cause of the "shadow band" phenomenon
No full textFaint patterns of light and shadow known as "shadow bands" are often seen for a few moments before, and for a similar period Just after, a total solar eclipse. The cause of these bands is not known at this time. One of the proposed mechanisms for producing these shadow bands is basic Fresnel edge diffraction.A computer program was developed by the writer to calculate the Fresnel patterns produced by the eclipse geometry. Certain assumptions, believed to be reasonable, were made in this development. The resulting patterns were compared to the available data on shadow bands, and were found to differ by roughly two orders of magnitude in most respects.The author concludes that basic Fresnel edge diffraction for visible wavelengths is not capable of producing shadow band like patterns.Thesis (M.S.

This tripeptide intermediatewill be important in the development of a tripeptide fluorogenicsubstrate for angiotensin-converting enzyme because of its fluorescent probe.Analyses indicate that L-phenylalanyl-N-carbobenzoxy-Lhistidyl-L-leucine methyl ester hydrochloride tetrahydrate wasobtained as a result of cleavage of the p-nitrobenzyloxycarhonylgroup from p-nitrobenzyloxycarbonyl-L-phenylalanyl-N-carbohenzoxyL-histidyl-L-leucinemethyl ester.We attempted to prepare the tripeptide intermediate by theuse of the stepwise approach starting from the carboxyl terminalend and adding one N-protected acid after the other. DicarbobenzoxyLhistidine and L-leucine methyl ester were coupled by the dicyclohexylcarbodiimide method to form dicarbobenzoxy-L-histidyl-Lleucine methyl ester. The latter was treated with hydrobromic acidin dioxane and the crude dihydrobromide, after neutralization, wasreacted with p-nitrobenzyloxycarbonyl-L-phenylalanjne to formp_nitrobenzyloxycarbonyl-L-phenylalany1-N-carbobenzoxy-L-histidy1-L-leucine methyl ester
