    AGY-3759 | Redfern Fire Station

    No full text
In 1870 the Hudsons Volunteer Fire Company was formed to service the Redfern area. The Company was located in Regent Street and was later renamed the Redfern Volunteer Company.(1) The Redfern Volunteer Company registered with the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) in 1884 as Brigade Number 10. The Company was not registered with the MFB in 1889 and the Fire Brigades Board Annual Report for 1896 states the anticipated establishment of a fire station in Redfern “has not yet been accomplished, but it is believed that the Government is favourably disposed towards the desired dedication of the present Court-house and Police-station for that purpose when those premises are vacated for the buildings in course of erection.”(2) Renovation of the former Court-house and Police station was nearing completion in late 1898 and the reformed Redfern Brigade occupied the Fire station from 28 December 1898.(3) On 29 January 1899, the new station was formally handed over by the Chief Secretary to the Fire Brigade Board.(4) Redfern Brigade now consisted of permanent staff. In 1972 a new station opened.(5) In 2000, the station was located at 113 George Street, Redfern.(6) ENDNOTES<br> 1.
