The role of oxytocin in plasticity, memory and attachment dynamics.

    No full text
The peptide hormones oxytocin (OT) and arginine vasopressin (AVP) have been implicated in the regulation of mammalian social behavior. There is considerable evidence implicating both oxytocin and vasopressin in social recognition and social memory. This review explores their role in attachment dynamics. Oxytocin is one element in a complex network of interactions observed in natural phenomena ranging from molecular biology, etology, social behavior and human psychology

Effect of bromazepam on growth hormone and prolactin secretion in normal subjects

    No full text
The growth hormone and prolactin response to oral bromazepam (3 mg) was assessed in 5 normal men and 5 normal women. A peak growth hormone response of 11.9 +/- 3.7 ng/ml (mean +/- SD), significantly above the baseline (p less than 0.01), was achieved in the men. On the other hand, there was no statistically significant response of growth hormone secretion in the women. No change in prolactin secretion was observed in either sex

Data for 'Carbon sequestration and vegetation properties across the age of community managed exclosures in Northern Ethiopia'

Exclosures are becoming the common approaches used to rehabilitate and increase the net biomass productivity of the extremely degraded areas. However, its effect across the age of exclusion on vegetation and soil properties is not yet predictable on the communal lands of Northern Ethiopia. This data are collected to investigate the effect of land exclusion and age of exclosures on vegetation and soil properties. To do so, we selected three age of exclosures (5 to 7, 12 to 15 and >20 years) and adjacent free grazing areas. Each age of exclosure was replicated three times with agroecological similarity in consideration. From each exclosure and free grazing areas, six larger plots (10 m x 20 m), which a total of 72 larger plots were sampled. Five small quadrats of 1 m x 1 m (a total of 360) were nested within each larger plot. The data are herbaceous species richness, herbaceous species diversity, herbaceous species dominance, herbaceous species evenness, herbaceous composition, herbaceous density, woody species richness woody species diversity, woody species evenness, woody density, herbaceous aboveground biomass, woody aboveground , woody below ground biomass, aboveground biomass carbon, below ground biomass carbon, soil organic carbon stock, total nitrogen, total potassium, CEC, EC, PH, balk density. Our result indicates that species richness, diversity, biomass, biomass carbon, SOC, total nitrogen (TN) and total potassium (TK) were significantly (p<0.05) increased due to exclusion of communal lands. Density of perennial species, density of grass species, woody species richness, diversity and density, woody biomass, biomass carbon, SOC, TN and TK were significantly (p<0.05) increased with the age of exclosures, whereas herbaceous species richness and diversity, and annual species density were higher in the young-aged exclosures than in the other older exclosures. The higher value of vegetation and soil properties in the older exclosures is due to improved soil fertility, reduced erosion, and moisture conservation. The decreased herbaceous species richness and diversity with age of exclosures is due to the woody density and canopy, and domination by few perennial grasses. The old exclosures stored 267% and 37.66% more biomass carbon and SOC than the young-aged exclosures, respectively. This study is important to conclude on the benefit of land exclosure for permanent carbon storage, which is vital to reduce greenhouse gas. The reduced herbaceous biomass, richness, and diversity in the old exclosures may need to look into light grazing when the age of exclosures reach its herbaceous climax productivity. Alternative feed resource for community livestock and carbon credit payment may need for the community when permanent exclosure is targeted for carbon stock. This may assure the willingness of the community for sustainable protection of the exclosures

Lenalidomide in the Treatment of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia

    No full text
The application of nucleoside analogue-based chemotherapy and immunotherapy with rituximab or alemtuzumab has increased both response rate and survival in patients with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL). However, because none of these therapies is curative, sequential therapeutic regimens are required. The majority of patients with relapsed or refractory CLL carry poor prognostic factors and show shorter overall survival and resistance to standard treatment. Numerous drugs have recently been approved for CLL therapy and many novel agents are under clinical investigation. The role of the tumor microenvironment and of immune dysfunction in CLL have allowed to enlarge the therapeutic armamentarium for CLL patients. This article will provide a comprehensive summary regarding mechanism of action, efficacy and safety of lenalidomide in CLL patients. Relevant clinical trials using lenalidomide alone or in combinations are discussed. Lenalidomide shows good activity also in relapsed/refractory or treatment-naive CLL patients. Definitive data from ongoing studies are needed to validate overall and progression-free survival. The toxicity profile might limit lenalidomide use because it can result in serious side effects, but largely controlled by gradual dose escalation. Further understanding of the exact mechanism of action in CLL will allow more efficacious use of lenalidomide alone or in combination regimens

Successful management with intravenous immunoglobulins in alemtuzumab-induced acute inflammatory demyelinating neuropathy : clinical report of three patients

    No full text
Several neurological complications have been associated with the use of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), and demyelinating disorders have been estimated to affect the 0.02–0.20% of treated patients. Alemtuzumab is a humanized chimeric mAbthat targets the CD52 antigen, it is currently approved for relapsed/refractory and high-risk untreated chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). The major complication of alemtuzumab therapy is the increased risk of opportunistic infections secondary to the profound immunosuppression. Autoimmune diseases as Graves disease, immune thrombocytopenic purpura and Good pasture syndrome, have been reported to be associated to the treatment. In the present report, we present three CLL patients developing acute inflammatory demyelinating neuropathy during treatment with alemtuzumab. Despite the severity of the complication, all the patients showed an univocal good clinical response after treatment with intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG). As alemtuzumab represents, nowadays, a key therapeutic option for CLL, clinicians should be aware of this rare and disabling toxicit

McCune- Albright syndrome: evidence for autonomous multiendocrine hyperfunction

    No full text
The triad of sexual precocity, polyostotic fibrous dysplasia, and cutaneous pigmentation is known as McCune-Albright syndrome. Recently, additional endocrinologic disorders have been described as part of this syndrome, including hyperthyroidism, acromegalt, hyperparathyroidism, and Cushing syndrome. The cause of the syndrome is still unknown; central or peripheral origin of the sexual precocity and of the endocrinologic abnormalities has been postulated. We report a girl with Mc-Cune-Albright syndrome in whom there is evidence that sexual precocity and hyperthyroidism result from the autonomous acitvity of ovaries and thyroid gland
