Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Ideological Assumptions of Psychology
No full textV magistrskem delu s pomočjo teoretskega aparata kritične psihologije in kritičnih teorij ideologije proučujemo ideološke predpostavke psihologije kot znanosti in ideološkega aparata države. Uvodoma predstavimo ponavljajoče se krize psihologije kot znanosti in kritičnopsihološke perspektive, nato pa izpeljemo kritiko psihologije na podlagi kritike ideologije. Ideologija je predstavljena kot kompleksen predmet proučevanja, pri čemer jo na področju psihologije analiziramo kot kompleksen materialni ustroj družbenih odnosov, ki določajo človeške prakse in miselne forme. V osrednjem delu obravnavamo pogoje nastanka moderne psihologije oziroma razvoja znanstvene psihologije: družbene in zgodovinske pogoje razsvetljenstva, zgodovino norosti in evolucijske teorije, pa tudi obstoječe ideologije in politično-ekonomsko ureditev. Nadaljujemo z razpravo o zagatah psihologije, ki izvirajo iz njenega prizadevanja, da bi se vzpostavila kot pozitivistična naravoslovna znanost, in dekonstruiramo kriterije objektivnosti in vrednotne nevtralnosti. Podrobneje predstavimo družbeno-zgodovinske pogoje konstituiranja psihološkega subjekta kot enotnega, racionalnega posameznika, ločenega od družbe, in med drugim pokažemo, da se tako koncipirana subjektiviteta ujema s subjektom kapitalistične ekonomske izmenjave, ter izpostavimo nekatere problematične posledice dualizma posameznik/družba. Na podlagi zgodovinskih pogojev nastanka in predpostavk psihologije prikažemo njeno delovanje kot ideološki aparat države: psi-kompleks kot materialno celoto ideoloških praks, predstav, ritualov, tekstov in strokovnjakov. Kot ključen vidik psi-kompleksa izpostavimo interpelacijo individuov v psihološke subjekte, pri čemer se opiramo na Althusserjevo teoretizacijo ideološke interpelacije kot procesa, ki omogoča prostovoljno podreditev posameznic in posameznikov. S tem pokažemo, kako psi-kompleks z interpelacijo aktivno sodeluje v reprodukciji obstoječega družbenega reda. Analiziramo, kako se psihološke vednosti in prakse vključujejo v mehanizme družbenega nadzorovanja, pri tem pa izhajamo iz konceptov epistemskega nasilja nad drugačnimi oblikami vednosti in subjektivnosti ter tehnologij družbenega, legitimiranih z znanstveno psihološko vednostjo. Obravnavane vidike naloge konkretno predstavimo na dveh primerih delovanja psi-kompleksa: na področju poklicnega ocenjevanja in na konceptu duševnega zdravja, pri čemer prikažemo njihovo simultano delovanje.This masters’ thesis addresses ideological assumptions of psychology as a science and ideological state apparatus with the function of the interpellation of subjects in existing social order through theories of critical psychology and critical ideology theory. In the introduction we conceptualize repetitive crises of psychology as a science, critical psychological perspectives and build the critique of psychology on the basis of ideology critique. Ideology is understood as a complex study subject that is applied in the field of psychology as a complex material structure of social relations that define human praxis and thought forms. In the main part we demonstrate social and historical conditions such as enlightenment, history of madness, evolutionary theory, as well as existing ideologies and political economy that enabled the rise of psychology as a science. Psychology is presenting itself as a positivist natural science under assumptions of objectivity, value neutrality, separation of common sense and ideology. In the discussion about her workings as a science we deconstruct these assumptions and show their untenability. We present in more detail the social-historical conditions of the constitution of psychological subject as a unified, rational individual separated from society and problematise these assumptions. We show congruence of this specific subjectivity with the subject of capitalist economic exchange and expose some problematic consequences of assumptions about subject as individual and dualism of individual and society. Based on historical conditions of emergence and active prepositions, we demonstrate the workings of psychology as an ideological state apparatus: psy-complex as a material ensemble of ideological social practices, thought-forms, rituals, texts, and professionals. We present interpellation of individuals into psychological subjects as a key element of psy-complex. Interpellated subjects voluntary subject and work through ideology thus reproducing productive forces, which is elaborated in the case of psychological subject. Psychology participates in mechanisms of social control through the production of epistemic violence over different knowledges and subjectivities as well as technologies of the social, legitimized with scientific psychological knowledge. We showcase two specific examples: occupational assessment and the concept of mental health, through which we demonstrate simultaneous workings of the discussed aspects of the psy-complex
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
