    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Progress Code: completedStatement: Please see child dataset entries for quality information.<b>Purpose</b><br/>Collected to progress understanding of ice sheet depth, and the structure and character of the ice-bedrock interface zone. Auxilliary data includes readings such as near-surface snowpack temperature. Research products that are derived using these data are intended for use by a wide, interdisciplinary group spanning Antarctic geophysics, observational glaciology, ice sheet modelling and other Earth System science research such as links between atmosphere, meteorology and ice sheet inputs.This parent data holding includes geophysical data, including seismic, magnetotelluric and glacier geophysics information. The field data acquisition makes use of GRIT Facility (Geophysical Research Instruments for AnTarctica), which was established using funding including ARC LIEF (2020) and AuScope NCRIS (2022, 2023) with a focus on ice sheet monitoring for the Antarctic Continent using geophysical instruments, with close alignment to Australian Antarctic Program priorities in Climate, Sea Level Change and Monitoring Antarctica. The GRIT Facility includes both seismic and magnetotelluric instruments. Seismic methods enable the detection of icequakes and the inference of material properties, while magnetotelluric methods enable the detection of saline subglacial water (i.e. subglacial water with possible ocean influences).<br/><br/>Predictions of ice sheet behaviour are limited by lack of detailed information on the ice sheet-bedrock interface zone, and by detailed knowledge of glacier processes for a given location. This data holding provides raw data records of naturally occurring background, local and teleseismic seismic signals, recorded by rapidly deployed posthole instruments. It also includes data records of naturally occurring magnetotelluric signals. These signals types may be used either individually, or using computational approaches that combine geophysical signal types. Seismic recordings are made where possible through a seasonal cycle to understand any impact of the time of year on the patterns of icequakes, recorded background noise, and any seasonal changes to the ice sheet bedrock interface zone. <br/><br/>The hidden zone at the base of ice sheets includes features such as sediment layers, that may be saturated or not, be frozen or not, and lie over bedrock of variable composition. This ice-bedrock interface zone can also include sub-ice meltwater channels or subglacial groundwater. All these features help to control the past and present behaviour of the Antarctic ice sheets and how easily they slide over the rock beneath. Icequakes enable us to detect and monitor changes in how glaciers and ice sheets are evolving. <br/>We can make better decisions on the future impact of sea level rise if we understand ice sheet foundations, structures, processes and change, and whether any predicted changes will occur gradually or suddenly

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Investigating the deep structure of terranes and terrane boundaries: insights from earthquake seismic data

    The crust and upper mantle structure beneath a single, three-component broadband seismic station may be determined using energy from distant earthquakes. Features such as the depth of the seismic Moho, the abruptness of the change in seismic velocity across the Moho, the velocity profile through the crust and the seismic velocity of the upper mantle may be found using receiver function techniques. Waveforms are analysed which contain energy arising from the interaction of incoming signals with the Earth structure beneath the receiving station. Seismic characteristics of the deep crust are often continuous or slowly varying across a single terrane and, moreover, show sudden contrasts across terrane and other major tectonic boundaries. Such techniques are, therefore, appropriate tools in the exploration of deep structure and, hence, in the understanding of large-scale continental assembly. They complement geological and geochronological investigations of surface rocks by providing the third spatial dimension. In regions of no surface basement exposure, seismic and other geophysical methods provide the only means of mapping the lateral extent of a given terrane and/or tracing province boundaries. Receiver function methods are presented here in the context of terrane tectonics with illustrative examples from former Gondwanan provinces and locations on the Pacific margin
