Addendum to the paper: Fixed points for non-expansive set-valued mappings
No full textThe aim of this paper is to improve or simplify some theorems which have been published in the paper ``Fixed points for non-expansive set-valued mappings" in this journal after a stay of the author at the University of Catania. In particular in the previous paper the main results were that in general the known properties of the set of fixed points for contractive set-valued mappings fail as soon as one replaces ``contractive\u27\u27 by ``non-expansive\u27\u27. In fact, as we shall prove in this addendum, some of them hold true when the surrounding space is finite-dimensional, or the domain is compact. Some results of the previous paper are reproved here with a simpler proof for making this addendum more self-contained
Effects of the Geotechnical Knowledge Levels on the Definition of the Design Seismic Input for a School in Catania (Italy)
No full textAbstractThis paper deals with the seismic response of the soil underneath a school in Catania (Italy), characterized by a high seismic hazard. Studies of the seismic soil response by 1D analyses are carried out according two different levels of knowledge proposed for the soil: i) a limited level (LC1) acquired by initial design information; ii) an adequate level (LC2) acquired by recent geotechnical investigations. Each knowledge level is characterized by a proposed geotechnical confidence factor. Italian Regulations propose knowledge levels and confidence factors for structures, but ignore theme for soil and foundations. Seven different accelerograms, scaled at the same PHA with reference to the estimated seismicity of Catania, are applied at the bedrock. Soil nonlinearity is taken into account according to Eurocode 8. The dynamic response of the system is analysed in the time and frequency domains. The main goal of the paper is to stress the importance of the different geotechnical knowledge levels in the evaluation of the design/retrofitting seismic inputs in terms of acceleration time histories, amplification factors, response spectra and amplification function. The application of the proposed procedure is a useful methodological example for the designers
Natura e istituzione della religione in David Hume
No full textIl saggio mira a dimostrare la tesi dell’esistenza di uno stretto rapporto tra la riflessione filosofica di David Hume intorno alla storia naturale della religione e l’ermeneutica storica della medesima. Perciò l’autrice offre una lettura penetrante del sesto volume della History of England, da lei considerato come la chiave di volta per comprendere globalmente il pensiero filosofico-religioso del pensatore scozzese. Nel raffronto tra l’History, la Storia naturale della religione e i Dialoghi sulla religione naturale, il lavoro si concentra con acribia filologica sull’analisi dei giudizi di Hume relativi alla sfera religiosa, dimostrando che essa non è intesa dallo scozzese come mera belief, ma anche come espressione ideologica di un forte potere istituzionale, quello clericale, profondamente radicato nella civil society inglese.This essay focuses on the thesis regarding the existence of a close relationship between the philosophical thought of David Hume on the natural history of religion and historical hermeneutics. The author offers a perusal of the sixth volume of The History of England, that she considers to be the keynote for an overall understanding of the philosophical-religious view of the Scottish philosopher. Moreover making a comparison between The History of England, The Natural History of Religion and Dialogues concerning natural religion, and analyzing accurately Hume’s opinions regarding the religious sphere, she shows how for Hume, religion was not just a belief but also an ideological expression of a strong institutional power, deeply ingrained in the British civil society

No full textRodolfo il Glabro focalizza la trama delle Storie su avvenimenti riguardanti soprattutto la Germania e la Francia tra i secoli X e XI. Ciò non significa tuttavia un suo completo disinteresse verso altre zone geografiche, in particolare quelle dove si registrano notizie di miracoli e di prodigi, argomenti che suscitano l’attenzione del nostro autore, attento a cogliere le manifestazioni del volere divino. La presente ricerca analizza l’area delle Alpi, in cui Rodolfo ambienta vicende significative per recuperare la presenza di Dio nella storia dell’umanità. Rodulfus Glaber focuses his Histories mainly on events regarding Germany and France between the tenth and the eleventh centuries. This does not mean, however, a total lack of interest toward other regions, and in particular those where miracles and prodigies take place. These extraordinary events are very intriguing to the author, an acute observer of the manifestations of the Divine will. This paper analyses the area of the Alps, where Rodulfus set significant episodes to underline the presence of God in history
