Prosthetic Management of Edentulous Mandible using Endosseous Implants and Overdentures

The choice of a suitable prosthesis for a specific case is determined to a great extent by the underlying residual bone as well as the mucosa. Also of significance are the expectations and demands of the patient from the prosthesis. The following case report discusses the rehabilitation of a complete edentulous mandibular arch with an implant retained mandibular over denture.
Clinical Significance
Implant retained fixed or removable prostheses are good treatment options in patients who have a compromised edentulous foundation.

Human rights abuses in any part of the globe deserve world-wide condemnation because state sovereignty is a shield against external aggression. It cannot be used as a sword against one’s own nationals. Haifa century after the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, one can say with guarded optimism that freedom is on the march; that the human rights quest has gained a universal appeal. But despite global recognition of the legitimacy of the human rights discourse, there remain disagreement and discord on a number of thorny issues. The essay examines whether the “Asian values” argument is a smokescreen for the perpetuation of authoritarianism or whether it is a genuine attempt to resist the sweep of hegemonic “Western ” values. The author warns that the human rights quest is a journey, not a destination and one must remain vigilant against new threats like economic globalisation which has added a new form of oppression to older discriminations

Forces Hampering Organizational Learning in a Military Organization: A Qualitative Case Study
No full textAbstract: A rigid, traditional, hierarchical organizational structure, typical of many military organizations is no longer seen as effective in terms of anticipating and responding to fast moving changes in the external environment in the modern era. Such structures leave decision-making and directives largely in the hands of a few individuals at the top of the organizational pyramid which is not conducive to the rapid and seamless implementation of policies and strategies in response to changing circumstances. Military organizations stand to benefit if they endorse some of the organizational learning approaches adopted by learning organizations which are better equipped to deal with change. This paper limits itself to looking at the various structural and behavioral characteristics identified in a particular military organization that are deemed to act as impediments to organizational learning and which stand in the way of its potential transition to a learning organization. An examination of these obstacles forms an important part of a wider qualitative, single-case, descriptive study which set out to determine how this particular military organization could turn itself into a learning organization. The study looked at various aspects of organizational learning within the case organization in order to determine the extent to which these corresponded to the way learning is promoted and managed within learning organizations and to identify a transformational pathway towards becoming a learning organization. Data was collected from a document review, observations blended with informal conversations and via in-depth interviews. The findings outlined in this paper highlight the ways in which the case organization was not functioning as a learning organization and identified the kind of transformational policies that need to be put in place.

Performance evaluation of the cache and forward link layer protocol in multihop wireless subnetworks
No full textCache aNd Forward (CNF) is a clean-slate protocol architecture for content delivery services in the future Internet. CNF is based on the concept of store-and-forward routers with large storage, providing for opportunistic delivery to occasionally disconnected mobile users and for in-network caching of content. This thesis presents the design and evaluation of a reliable link layer protocol for CNF in context of a multi-hop wireless access network scenario. The design aims to deliver files efficiently on a hop-by-hop basis as opposed to an end-to-end approach employed by TCP/IP. CNF leverages in-network storage to store an entire file before forwarding the file to the next node. If a next hop is not currently available or has low transmission quality, files may be stored at each CNF router along the path towards the destination. In addition to the link layer protocol, end-to-end transport in CNF involves packet scheduling and routing at each network node based on cross-layer observation of link speed, MAC congestion, path length, etc. An ns-2 simulation model has been developed for a multi-hop 802.11 access network with CNF routers and a reliable link layer protocol. Baseline results for first-come-first-serve (FCFS) scheduling and shortest path routing show significant capacity gains for CNF relative to TCP for a variety of network topologies and channel models. For example, for a 49 node network with a grid topology, maximum achievable throughput with CNF was found to be 12.5 Mbps as compared to 3.9 Mbps for TCP for a scenario in which the radio links experience short-term outages with a 5% duty cycle. Preliminary results showing the value of simple cross-layer scheduling in CNF are also given in the conclusion.M.S.Includes bibliographical references (p. 48-49)
Development of a virtual reality milling machine for knowledge learning and skill training
No full textCurrent methods of training personnel on high cost machine tools involve the use of both classroom and hands on practical training. The practical training required the operation of costly equipment and the trainee has to be under close personnel supervision. The main aim of this project is to reduce the amount of practical training and its inherent cost, time, danger, personal injury risk and material requirements by utilising a virtual reality technology.
In this study, an investigation into the use of Virtual reality for training operators and students to use the Milling Machine was carried out. The investigation has been divided into two sections: first the development of Milling Machine in the 3D virtual environment, where the real machine was re-constructed in the virtual space.
This has been carried out by creating objects and assembling them together. The complete Milling machine was then properly modelled and rendered so it could be viewed from all viewpoints.
The second section was to add motion to the virtual world. The machine was made of functions as for the real machine. This was achieved by attaching Superscape Control Language (SCL) to the objects. The developed Milling machine allows the users to choose the material, speed and feed rate. Upon activation, the virtual machine will be simulated to carry out the machining process and instantaneous data on the machined part can be generated.
The results were satisfactory, the Milling Machine was modelled successfully and the machine was able to perform according to task set. Using the developed Virtual Model, the ability for training students and operators to use the Milling Machine has been achieved
