    Correlation of Solar X-ray Flux and SID Modified VLF Signal Strength

    No full text
    This paper presents a quantitative comparison of the X-ray flux during solar flares, as measured by the GOES-15 satellite, and the associated effects on the ionization levels in the lower ionosphere as measured by Sudden Ionospheric Disturbance (SID) monitors around the globe. These monitors detect signals from a variety of different transmitting stations, each sending a unique Very Low Frequency (VLF) or Low Frequency (LF) radio wave signal ranging from 16.4 to 77.5 kHz. Global signal propagation distances are achieved via the Earth-ionosphere waveguide propagation mode. During a solar flare, the increased X-ray flux enhances the ionization response in the sunlit ionosphere. The resulting SID in the lower ionosphere alters LF and VLF signal propagation. The monitored signal strength increases as a result of increased conductivity of the layer and a decrease in height of the ionosphere boundary. X-ray flux and SID modified signal strength were analyzed from March 2010 to June 2014. Ionospheric incubation times, and duration and strength of signal enhancement are related to flare strength via the X-ray flux enhancement

    Tailored SID & Profile Allocation for Amsterdam Airport Schiphol

    No full text
    Currently, only one Standard Instrument Departure (SID) track and one flight procedure is used per runway departure fix combination. In contrast to tailored arrivals, the potential benefit of tailored departures has been left relatively undiscovered. The research objective is to quantify the potential benefit of tailored SID-s and profile allocation for Amsterdam Airport Schiphol by developing a model that is capable of simulating departure trajectories per runway departure fix and optimize the overall allocation of departing aircraft for noise and fuel consumption. The proposed methodology includes a two-step modelling framework. The two models involve the design of novel tailored departure trajectories using a multi objective genetic algorithm and the computation of optimal flight allocation by means of Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP). A case study is presented and serves as proof of concept.Aerospace EngineeringAerospace Transport & Operation

    Microwave, X-ray Emission & SID Associated with 13 May 1981 Solar Flare

    No full text
    190-192Correlated optical, microwave, X-ray observations and the resulting SID effect have been analyzed for the double ribbon solar flare of class 3B observed on 13 May 1981. X-ray flux in the 0.5-4 Å and 1-8 Å bands has been estimated using the observed SPA data of 16kHz VIF signals. The radio source responsible for the emission of microwave bursts seems to consist of two components, i.e. thermal and non-thermal components generating two distinct features in the time profiles of the observed radio bursts. The values of magnetic field perpendicular to electron velocity have been estimated as H ~ 380 gauss, electron energy as E~ 1.4 MeV and the angular size of microwave bursts source as j ~ 30 arc sec

    NEW SPECTRA OF SiH+SiH^{+} AND SiD+SiD^{+}

    1^{1}. David M. Hirst, Chem. Phys. Lett., 128, 504 (1986).Author Institution: Department of Physics, University of New BrunswickExtensive series of new emission bands of SiH+SiH^{+} and SiD+SiD^{+} spectrum have been observed in the region 170 nm -- 200 nm from a high frequency discharge through a mixture of a trace of SiCl4SiCl_{4} in helium and hydrogen. This spectrum has been recorded at high resolution by a 6.6 m vacuum spectrograph. Rotational and vibrational analyses are carried out and molecular constants of the electronic states are determined. The rotational structure follows a simple 1Σ1Σ^{1}\Sigma-^{1}\Sigma transition. Ten bands of SiH+SiH^{+} and fifteen bands of SiD+SiD^{+} are explained as transitions between three new excited electronic levels and the lowest 3Π0^{3}\Pi_{0} state predicted from theoretical calculations.1calculations.^{1} The carrier of the spectrum is confirmed by the observed isotopic effect

    Star Corps : a feature-length comedy screenplay

    In the genre of science-fiction films, a popular theme predicts that in the future our lives will be shaped and controlled by machines and we, in fact, will emulate these revered mechanical masters and become soulless, unfeeling automatons, losing our sense of humor along the way. In this feature-length screenplay, the author contends that no matter where man is in the future; on a space ship cruising the galaxies or on a strange alien planet, he will still be taking pratfalls, still be exhibiting the good and bad traits that make him uniquely human. It is the author's purpose to express these points of view in this screenplay he describes as a respectful satire of the science-fiction film.California State University, Northridge. Preparation and characterization of the extracellular domain of human Sid-1.

    In C. elegans, the cell surface protein Sid-1 imports extracellular dsRNA into the cytosol of most non-neuronal cells, enabling systemic spread of RNA interference (RNAi) throughout the worm. Sid-1 homologs are found in many other animals, although for most a function for the protein has not yet been established. Sid-1 proteins are composed of an N-terminal extracellular domain (ECD) followed by 9-12 predicted transmembrane regions. We developed a baculovirus system to express and purify the ECD of the human Sid-1 protein SidT1. Recombinant SidT1 ECD is glycosylated and spontaneously assembles into a stable and discrete tetrameric structure. Electron microscopy (EM) and small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) studies reveal that the SidT1 ECD tetramer is a compact, puck-shaped globular particle, which we hypothesize may control access of dsRNA to the transmembrane pore. These characterizations provide inroads towards understanding the mechanism of this unique RNA transport system from structural prospective

    Human Rights and Development

    This paper presents some of the main indices (Freedom House indices of political rights and civil liberties; World Human Rights indices) measuring the level of human rights in the world's countries. By means of principal components analysis, the author obtains six factors out of the original forty items of the World Human Rights. Similarities and differences concerning the values of the various indices in the world's countries are identified and discussed. In order to identify the possible determinants of these similarities and differences, the author analyses the impact of lagged income and educational development on the level of human rights in the world's countries
